Right so it’s being described as Baroque because whoever is writing it is from the 18th century and can’t figure out how to upload the story

A lot of posters seem to be hard done by that this story isn't big enough, but let me tell you, rape is a very big deal. I think some people especially those living sheltered lives are sometimes desensitised to the reality of it, the word is banded about in silly ways and in popular culture. It's an extraordinarily serious and heinous crime (and one that is more common than many are aware of).

I have a friend who thinks that because she has never been sexually assaulted that no one has. It is enraging.

I have been raped while in a couple of relationships. I think my experience is very very normal - so normal that if women genuinely examined their own experiences more closely they would realise it had also happened to them.

We CANNOT normalise this behaviour or sweep it under the carpet. More women need to speak out about this.

If this were true then we'd have a news-breaking Dispatches every night of the week about rape.

Hi - yes absolutely, I agree. That's why I wrote woman/women. I was trying - and failing - to be subtle because on one of these threads there was a poster who was very angry about the 16 yr old's oral sexual assault being described as rape because the victim herself didn't choose to use that word. I was just trying not to upset or trigger anyone further!

In no way was I attempting to minimise what RB has done. It's absolutely awful. Of course it is. And I was genuinely shocked by the rapes. I just think that it's actually rather revealing that I didn't find the rest of it that surprising. As in, we're so used to these powerful men abusing and assaulting women that it's almost just par for the course now. RB has been a sexual predator in plain sight for a very long time - the only difference here is that it's all been laid out in more detail, and also it's even worse than we realised.

I understand what you're saying.

I was also really sickened by the details in that article. This isn't "promiscuity writ large". He was a charismatic, attractive, successful man who had no problem finding consensual sexual partners.

The victims' testimonies just make it clear that it's not just a grey area or a bit of drunken messing about. These are terrible abuses and assaults

It's really upsetting on many levels tbh.

This isn’t really the point of the thread - and I personally think Black Books was brilliantly written - but Glinner’s own wife found his anti-transgender activism so difficult to live with that it cost them their marriage. Pretty sure that if she’d been on AIBU posting that her husband had lost the plot and become a one man single issue pressure group I would have voted ‘LTB’. Not sure why pp are doing the head tilt ‘why are you so disappointed in glinner?’ nonsense.

Anyway, back to RB. I wonder if anything more will be revealed in the Dispatches? 90mins seems a fairly long programme.

@SpidersAreShitheads Yes, I used to love him. Was one of my favourite writers and loved any interviews or podcasts he was on. I also appreciated his support with abortion reform. I massively disagree with his gender critical views now and that’s all he ever talks/tweets about so I don’t follow him or his work anymore.

He is not allowed to work because of his gender critical views. I am sure @Glinner would like to be writing/directing another masterpiece. He's basically lost his own stage production of Father Ted to Hat Trick productions, who have embargoed it because those who like to cancel anyone with a different political view will not allow it to continue. What else do you expect him to do, other than shut up? His views on sex and gender are completely mainstream.

Yes. To this. All of it. I despair.

Trial by journalism, is that really a just way to go?
I'm struggling to understand, if the police had evidence wouldn't they act, legally

Where have you been the last millennia? Police acting on allegations about a famous man?

It’s possible the women didn’t feel able to go to the police. Or they did and weren’t believed or there wasn’t enough evidence, or they were scared of the brutality of the justice system or they were scared of him. It’s beyond naive to think that ‘going to the police’ often ends well for rape victims. The Times article said that the women don’t know each other. Some were scared of losing their jobs.

Honestly, it’s not rocket science to think this through.

At least he’s stood up for women. I might not always like the way he goes about it, but thank god someone does.

They acted on the allegations of Carl Beech against a whole group of high profile men and look how much egg they ended up with on their faces. Not to mention the lives that were destroyed.

hihelenhi · 16/09/2023 20:43

It's not a "mystery head tilt". I disagree with you. Fundamentally, regarding the facts. You do you, but other people are allowed to have different views, thanks. I'm sure if you want to start a separate thread about it you'll find others who agree with you and others who don't to discuss it with.

As you say, this isn't what this thread is about.

I'm assuming the police will be getting involved over RB after Dispatches airs?

I have been nowhere & I've seen quite a few slebs being imprisoned for abuse/historical rape, it's becoming pretty normal since Saville

Or perhaps she found the absolutely horrific backlash to anyone that believes in biological reality, impossible to live with. I agree with most of Glinner’s views (if not always how he expresses them) and I wouldn’t have stuck my neck out in the way he did, for this reason. It can be be beyond risky for families and livelihoods. So there’s more than one way of imagining why it would be hard to live with.

Wasnt the alleged rape in America? Is it similar over there? Was he even a big name over in the States at the time?

Tell that to Amber Heard.

It does concern me that this could blow up in this way. There are already lots of "trial by media" narratives about defending him and it's worrying that the police say they haven't been contacted.

I totally believe them, btw. But there could well be backlash because of this.

His 'views' are the same as most people's - and were universally accepted as facts until the last decade or so.

It's very sad that people (usually with an agenda) choose to twist his tireless campaigning against very prevalent gynophobia into some kind of imaginary 'anti-trans' obsession.

Thisgroupneverceasestoamazeme · 16/09/2023 20:48

@Messyhair321 the thing is, even if the police do act, there’s no saying whether the CPS will take it further and if they do it can lead to the trauma and pain being dragged out for the victim through a court case. I once supported a 15 year old victim who was giving evidence via video link. The perpetrator’s solicitor was brutal to her and essentially tried to imply she was ‘asking for it’ then tied her up in knots with confusing questions, all designed to discredit her. She was so courageous in following it through despite her solicitor frequently explaining that this would be likely to happen.

This is often why people either don’t go to the police or withdraw their complaint. If you add in the media circus I can understand why victims would just want to try and move on

Christ this thread is disappointing. Mumsnet posters have done so much over the years to help women who have been assaulted or raped. I think this website has genuinely made a major contribution to the way in which abusive relationships are viewed in wider society.

And yet here we are, at the end of a three year investigation by some of the UK’s finest journalists who are finally, finally taking misogyny in the entertainment industry seriously and there are people here defending Russel Brand and attacking the women who’ve been assaulted for ‘not going to the police.’ Who in the hell would go to the police to be disbelieved, belittled, or ignored? Even if you do get a charge, imagine how Brand would use his platform to assassinate your character, whip up his millions of followers to pile-on, and eventually just get away with it because a conviction is nigh-on impossible.

As someone who works in journalism, I can’t tell you how much work it takes to get a story like this across the line. Every word will be triple sourced.

And as for it being ‘not a big story’, it’s literally all anyone is talking about on social media.

There are 40,000 reporters in this country. If you think one story, written by six people, is some kind of dead cat to detract from ‘other more important stories’ then you’ve literally lost leave of your senses.

The failures of this Government, the fallout from Brexit, the collapse of the NHS and education are reported every single day. This story is not going to detract from them. It’s a piece of hard-won journalism that, despite ‘rumours’ for years, not a single other journalist has been able to get across the line (and God knows they’ve tried)

And for the person wanging on about Charlotte Owen getting a peerage, there’s a podcast on it as well as millions of words written by ‘MSM’ 🙄 journalists. A quick google should sort it.

Absolutely this. I can only imagine that some of Brand's followers are among those posting sceptical remarks on this thread about his victims. Short of that I can't understand the hostility to the investigation.
The Dispaches/Times stories will have been lawyered and researched to the n-th degree. I believe his victims. He needs to be held to account and we know that the police force doesn't achieve that in relation to allegations of rape.

Apart from the documented fact that he is friends with a number of transgender people who recognise the difference between sex and gender. You can have your own opinions, but you can't make up your own facts.

It would be an idiotic way to do it given all he’s lost. But yes we disagree and that’s certainly ok.

No, we don't. As is clear from our responses. I couldn't disagree more with you.

Shall we get back to the topic of THIS thread?
