The biggest news story of the year is about someone who has already written books about all the stuff he has done. I will be surprised if Dispatched can say one thing I didn't already know.

What a load of bollocks these threads are.

So someone on social media starts a rumour that the biggest news story of the year is about to break, so big that dispatches are apparently doing a an as yet undefined programme about it, and people use it as an opportunity to make unfounded allegations at any and every celebrity they see fit to trash.

There is absolutely no way that channel4 are going to risk a defamation lawsuit by making a programme to make unfounded allegations against some celebrity or other. The tabloids- yep, they’re constantly being sued for defamation and losing and they don’t care, but not channel4.

If there are criminal allegations they need to be dealt with by the police, not not the gutter press and social media.

Dispatches has done some good work in the past. I wish they'd do another Undercover Teacher.

If I was doing a documentary on this topic - #metoo in comedy - I'd spin it out to 90 minutes with the following.

  1. USA takedown of Bill Cosby, Louis CK, Aziz Ansari
  2. Misogyny of TV panel shows and comedy clubs/vibe of cheap laughs in shows like Celebrity Juice
  3. David Walliams hosting President Clubs Dinner/BGT tapes
  4. Russell Brand Shagger of the year/Trevor Lock dropped rape charges/the Andrew Sachs furore
  5. Stephen k Amos relationship with young man who later committed suicide
  6. Katherine Ryan/Sarah Pascoe predator comments (2 separate comedians known on circuit) Theroux/Backstage interview/Daniel Sloss podcast
  7. If I was really stretching I might mention spurious age gaps (Noel Fielding/Stephen Fry/Paul O'Grady but as the former does Channel 4 Bake Off and the latter two are/were national treasures unlikely)
  8. The rise of comediennes using their trauma in comedy as a way of coming to terms with it (Hannah Gadsby, Avital Ash)

90 minutes right there without committing libel

I’m a lawyer. I go on fact not wild speculation. I’ll wait until the outcome of a legal process before I accept things as fact. Perhaps you should consider doing the same.

The Facts are that nothing has been published about Brand, this is Brand's PR team getting his face all over the press (and presumably making extra money of the attention for his tinfoil hat rubbish - also devoid of facts).

The other fact is that men in the public with money and power get away with horrific behaviour every day, by using the legal process as a shield because recourse to law is largely for those with privilege who can outspend their victims.

Is there something politically to bury?

I think the entire Conservative Party is ready for burial! Grin

bombastix · 16/09/2023 09:07

it doesn't seem like an amazing story in itself if it is RB - apparently three years of investigation?

Jeez. Take down some corruption in politics for that kind of effort.

You sound exactly like a conspiracy theorist! And I say that as someone whose a fully paid up member of the Free Speech Union!

so any questioning of authority or the status quo is automatically a conspiracy theory?

I bet you don’t think feminism peddles conspiracy theories. ‘There’s a big, tyrannical patriarchy that only exists to oppress women and PoC.’

thats the biggest conspiracy theory that’s ever been invented but seems pretty popular among the progressives.

I don't think you need to limit yourself to the Conservatives 😂

ghostyslovesheets · 16/09/2023 09:13

Maybe the crimes where reported, to tour managers, agents and police and not acted on - hardly surprising when it comes to sexual misconduct and women asking for support

his PR has worked though - frame the narrative as a big conspiracy to silence his truth - which also framed it as ‘those women are liars’

i will watch and make my own mind up

I’m generally in the I believe her camp when it comes to rape and sexual assault though

Highandlows · 16/09/2023 09:13

Sounds like a going after him for political reasons. I would wait to see if this backfires. Bring awareness on what RB has been working on lately with more people siding with him.

SequinsandStiIettos · 16/09/2023 09:14

Three years of investigation?
Ignore my previous post then.
That took three minutes.

SurprisedWithAHorse · 16/09/2023 09:15

I've always thought he was a creep ever since he and whatshisface harassed Andrew Sachs and his granddaughter and then didn't have the decency to give a proper apology.

Rainbowsandbutterflies1990 · 16/09/2023 09:15

Crunchymum · 16/09/2023 07:53

His narrative doesn't support the mainstream narrative so I'm in no way surprised that he's about the outed as whatever it is he'll be outed as.

These kinds of "scandals" are always either a massive misdirection or designed to discredit someone who isn't playing ball.

I'm not a RB follower but I can see his narrative and the following he has garnered could be a problem.

Long gone are the days when people who go against the mainstream media are just ridiculed (David Icke was reduced to a "crazy man who believes in lizard people") now they have to be taken down completely.

Im not a conspiracy theorist, I'm just someone who is increasingly concerned about the back door errosion of freedom of speech.

What I find fascinating about these types of comments I'm not a conspiracy theorist but .... then other who r potentially being outed too what's their excuse? It is interesting that RB had found a following like cult like (against mainstream media crap they like to trot out) so any exposing of anything would automatically be seen as a attack on speech or attack on what he's doing on YouTube. What do the others that may he outed have as excuse? I don't think it's a Coincidence that he's gone down this road after things have happened. It's quite a convenient way of him to explain why he's being exposed.

Highandlows · 16/09/2023 09:16

Biden is ready for burial literally.

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 16/09/2023 09:16

It’s really disappointing if the biggest story of the year is just about more dreary slebs and their vile sexual behaviour - men can’t keep it in their pants, why is this news? After not keeping it in their pants it is then hushed up/minimised/ignored.

overdalexx · 16/09/2023 09:16

southlondoner02 · 16/09/2023 07:39

I assumed it was going to be about the systemic issues in the comedy industry with RB (and others) being examples of what predatory men have got away with

care to define "predatory"? One of those words that gets chucked around a lot (others that spring to mind include "pervert" and inappropriate") to damn folk while remaining vague about what's actually involved.

LadyBird1973 · 16/09/2023 09:16

Sometimes famous people get accused of sexual assaults because the accuser wants a payday or attention. And then it tums out said celebrity was completely innocent of any wrongdoing. Celebrities can be a very easy target because mud sticks and sometimes it's easier to pay off a chancer, than to risk their whole reputation and career.

So I really don't think anyone should be publicly naming celebrities or saying they are 'definitely' a rapist, in the basis of not liking them. This accusation is a seriously big deal and there absolutely should be proof before anyone starts repeating it as incontrovertible fact!

Being un likeable or having done things that are repugnant to most, doesn't make someone a rapist. Proof is really important.

Darkdiamond · 16/09/2023 09:17

Russell Brand said of the covid vaccine (Im paraphrasing) 'I'm not a medical professional and am not qualified to tell you what decisions to make. This is a decision for you to make based on your own personal circumstances'.

I'm triple vaccinated against Covid and didn't find his views to be anti vax. His views on pharmaceutical companies often having ulterior motives in order to engender profit aren't exactly conspiratorial. The concept of 'Big Pharma' as a money-making industry been a thing for years. It stands to reason that profit and the vaccine would have had some crossover, regardless where you stand on the vax issue.

Still doesn't mean he's a rapist.

PurpleMonkeys · 16/09/2023 07:41

I'm really trying to be all nice and innocent until proven and all that but, I mean, come on..
He's the creepiest filthiest douchiest arse weasel that's ever had a platform. How he convinced any women to ever get near him is absolutely beyond me.

This.

Without the being nice bit for me. He is the most disgusting ... well purplemonkeys summed it up perfectly.

notlucreziaborgia · 16/09/2023 09:20

Lol, Russell Brand fell off hard and has in recent years rebranded himself to appeal to conspiracy theorists. He’s verbose, which enables him to dress his grifting up in a cloak of intellectualism, with just the right amount of earnestness to appear honest.

TeaMistress · 16/09/2023 09:20

I've just had a look at his YouTube channel and the video he posted yesterday. He has disclosed that a number of serious allegations have been made against him presumably relating to sex offences. He has been open about a phase in his life where he was extremely promiscuous but that all of his sexual encounters have been consensual. Hes given detailed accounts of his promiscuity and sex addiction in his books. At the minute we don't know the detail of what he has been specifically accused of. I would assume the allegations are historic and for an offence allegedly committed during this time in his life. Of course if he has committed a criminal offence then yes there needs to be a police investigation and potentially a prosecution but honestly j would have thought that the journalists investigating this would have surely gone to the police three years ago if they thought that a crime had been committed ? Did they go to police three years ago and they have been gathering evidence? Something doesn't add up here.

Alondra · 16/09/2023 09:20

I read the threads about the big news about a "well known" person, and I haven't been disappointed. I was expecting a C celebrity.

Unfortunately, the big names in politics, judiciary, multinationals or head of states in ANY country, will never be subjected to investigations of any kind. We all know women have been and continue to be abused, we all know there is silence in the press about international paedophile rings involving very powerful people.

The powers controlling the press will make sure we won't be hearing about any of them.

Presumably other parties managed to get out of their pants as well, or would all be a bit tricky. It's how that manoeuvre happened/was brought about that that's important/at the heart of the matter surely?
This case may prove to be important but maybe not in the way some imagine.

According to the Guardian he's denying it's him.

vm.tiktok.com/ZGJWCuDqt/

He's put out a video- odd this popped up on my for you page as I've never once looked at any other RB videos, or any 'accusations' videos...

LakeTiticaca · 16/09/2023 09:23

Well what a massive let down. I thought it was going to be someone important!!
