The biggest news story of the year is about someone who has already written books about all the stuff he has done. I will be surprised if Dispatched can say one thing I didn't already know.

Wait, so some male comedians do coke, are misogynistic and cheat on their spouses? This is so shocking, WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED THAT!

Can we pay attention to real news now? As in truly shocking stuff that we should all be outraged such as NHS nurses using food banks, unaffordable house rental prices and civil servants needing to go on universal credit?

I’m not a big fan of Brand and think his videos are just okay. They’re not as insightful or radical as his fans proclaim but there are some interesting bits here and there. That said, a quick glance at the thumbnails shows his targets: the pandemic, the Russian war, Biden, internet privacy, censorship, the military, the hypocrisy of the elites … all objectively important topics.

Perhaps the Channel 4 team might consider doing investigations into some of that stuff rather than a bunch of 90s/00s British comedians most people couldn’t give two shits about.

Bouledeneige · 16/09/2023 15:55

Well his super-injunctions have failed to silence his accusers. Good. I'd thought he'd disappeared for a few years but realise that actually he's been garnering large audiences and his 6.59million subscribers on Youtube with his re-hashed alt right conspiracy theories.

This will now serve him well for those who want to defend him - because the global elite will be trying to silence his truth telling. And then there will be others saying coming out of the woodwork saying consent wasn't a thing in the naughty noughties.

But really he's a not very bright auto-didact peddling muddled thinking to the masses as some great insights when really he's just another shabby misogynist self obsessed narc who loves the sound of his own voice. The non-parenting parent and user of prostitutes.

He was never funny. Never insightful. Just nasty.

BeenThereDoneThat101 · 16/09/2023 15:56

On the one hand I think that trial by media just isn’t the way to go. Essentially anyone can say anything about anyone else and if it gains enough traction in the press then they’re declared guilty, irrelevant of the real facts.

On the other hand I question the motives of any so called victim who goes to the press rather than the authorities and wonder what their real motivation is. This is how genuine victims of sexual crimes end up being tarred with the reputation that they’re doing it for attention, because of the minority of people who, instead of going to the authorities, choose to become entertainment fodder instead.

BeenThereDoneThat101 · 16/09/2023 15:59

And yes, all this all leave for journalists having been cancelled over this, what an overreaction. More likely that the times has leaked snippets of information to ensure that more people sign up to get behind their paywall to read something that just isn’t really all that interesting.

Jamjarcandlestick · 16/09/2023 16:05

Ffs it’s behind a paywall.

I wouldn’t really call RB an A list celebrity

anotherside · 16/09/2023 16:05

I think the possibility of serious assaults are real news.

Nah, I think that’s some real work for police and legal teams if and when the relevant parties come forwards.

I’m not sure why Channel 4 would consider an allegation of an assault by a relatively random celeb, who holds no powerful office or belongs to any significant organisation (and likely dating from 10+ years ago), is of high public interest. As Musk said, perhaps they just don’t like the competition for eyes on screens.

What a depressing thread

These fuckers have been hiding in plain sight for decades ffs

"Oh, he wrote a book about his sex addiction he can't be a rapist"

Ffs

For about the 100th time - nobody’s said that.

ScribblingPixie · 16/09/2023 16:10

What if the press came to them? What if something pretty bad happened to you and you didn't want to report it to the police because of the added trauma it would cause you or because you didn't think you would be believed. But an investigation by a reputable newspaper let you know that you weren't alone, that other women had suffered and you could bring your attacker down and prevent the same thing happening to others without the ordeal of police interviews, medical examinations, court case etc. And maybe you could even do it anonymously with the newspaper withholding your name so no one could gossip about you. That would all be quite motivating, I think.

anotherside · 16/09/2023 16:11

That Sunday Times article would probably be better if they didn’t lead with a silly picture of Brand as the devil. The once respected press and TV news is nowadays just as ridiculous as any of the stuff spouted by the more hyperbolic YouTube current affairs stars.

ScottishIceCream · 16/09/2023 16:11

So four women have come forward, one who was 16 at the time.

So hopefully other sexual predators who have a proclivity for 16 year olds might be exposed properly one day.

newnamethanks · 16/09/2023 16:12

RB on stage tonight in Wembley whilst Dispatches is showing. Anyone got a ticket?

I've said further down thread.. Perhaps the victims have been to the police and got no where just like 1000s of women before them. Perhaps this is there chance to tell there story.

He's always been an absolute arse. Remember the message he left on Andrew Sach's answer phone?

HoldOnMiGenna · 16/09/2023 16:22

Maybe, just maybe, Piers Morgan has managed to keep his cock to himself unless invited in a very clear, unambiguous way.
And misogyny in and of itself is unfortunately not a reason to expose anybody.
If it was, at least fifty percent of women and the vast majority of males would have found themselves looking over their shoulders at some point in their life.

PeopleAreWeird · 16/09/2023 16:19

Well that comes as a surprise to nobody. Would be nice if he had to stand trial now.

Actually more fascinated by the women who remain married and have kids with these types of men. What does she gain? Is he different behind closed doors or just as crazy/garbled/paranoid like the public persona.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 16/09/2023 16:28

Personally I prefer criminal investigations to be undertaken by the police, not a television company or Murdoch owned newspaper. I just don't think this is the way to go about it, but I do appreciate the reluctance to deal with the police.

Daz57 · 16/09/2023 16:30

Another trial by media. This should never be allowed. Have they learnt nothing from the people who have been treated like this and ended their lives? Just horrible and cruel.
What is wrong with people that they can make these programmes, trying to destroy others.
My daughter was hounded to her death and the reporter at her inquest said he was reporting it as ‘it was in the public interest’.
I hope everyone boycotts this programme.

EasternStandard · 16/09/2023 16:30

Does that article and the programme lead to an arrest?

I don’t know what’s meant to happen

My guess is that it's some variation of "it's scary out there".
