Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

The thing is with the orange juice as a starter, it came in a tiny glass when as it was so delich you wanted a bucket of the stuff. Flipping lovely and today OJ isn’t the same.

Duck a L'orange. Not seen that for years.

Brandy Snaps !! Decent size, filled with fresh cream, maybe a little kirsch and a black cherry stuffed in each end.

beetlebrain · 10/09/2023 19:42

As a pp mentioned, the recipe book" The Prawn Cocktail Years" by Simon Hopkinson and Lindsay Bareham offers really good recipes for all these well loved retro classics. Even chicken Maryland!

I also want to say that some kind of ball of rugged potato or breadcrumbs (or maybe both) rolled around grated cheese and then deep fried. A cross between scampi and a scotch egg, but filled with cheese. Very salty as I remember.

Ooh I love that. Sadly missed.

Death by Chocolate. Was always on the menu in the late 80s/early 90s when I used to waitress in the local pub.

My grandad loved it! I hope it's still on the menu in the great beyond

Baked Alaska! I used to want this on my birthday every year!

I occasionally make this for DS, who gets nostalgic sometimes!

I yearn to see Floating Islands on a menu again - dessert of the gods.
