Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

Vegetarian meals are getting harder to find in restaurants now. Mostly vegan substitutes and it's simply just not the same.

Exactly this!

I used to love the veggie meals. Mushroom risotto, macaroni cheese, veggie curries etc.

It's all disgusting meat substitutes now 🤢

More of a greasy spoon menu, but liver and bacon. I used to love that! (Waiting for the hate😁)

Scousemousey · 10/09/2023 19:28

Oh, also Florida Cocktail. That was tinned mandarins and grapefruit segments 😁

UnctuousUnicorns · 10/09/2023 19:28

I miss Pizzaland. Lovely thin crust pizzas, none of your stodgy doughy stuff. Plus Caesar's Palace in Liverpool, such a chavvy place, but the food was plentiful and tasted good, and such "exotic" decor. I think it was closed down because all its staff were cash in hand illegal immigrants, of the sort that built most cities, if you think about it.

Knickerbocker glory

ABSOLUTELY, I miss them and ice cream Sundaes.

A couple of ice cream scoops doesn't cut it. Where is the artistry?

Chicken in a basket

Chickee in der baskee! Did anything else come in a basket? Was the basket edible?

I remember rubbery Camembert, deep fried and served with jam, in the 90s. Don’t miss it.

Spaghetti cheese, on the other hand…

Oh I had forgotten all about that delicacy Grin

I can't recall a Fatty Arbuckles but DH and I were doing some motorway driving recently and we were reminiscing about the 'Happy Eater' chain of motorway service restaurants.

Burger King used to do a proper vegetable bean burger in the 1980s. I still miss it.

I can only find ones now in supermarkets with curry/spicy favouring now which is both unnecessary and nowhere near as nice

reesewithoutaspoon · 10/09/2023 19:30

Duck a l'orange was the height of sophistication in the 70's

I miss pate and Melba toast as a starter.
Garlic mushrooms in port and stilton sauce
black forest gateaux

I remember serving melon as a started when I started out as a chef 🤣 also fruit salad or a fruit juice, garlic mushrooms were a pretty new thing back then and egg mayo was also a popular one.

Prawn cocktail was something we had at home every Christmas but no other time.

A lot of old deserts are no longer on menu’s, things like rice pudding, spotted dick and trifle. I do still see sticky toffee pudding on menus but a lot of hot pudding have vanished.

I had rice pudding at a local restaurant the other week. It had a splodge of cherry jam
In the middle! It was gorgeous

Plaice
Eton Mess

Eton Mess is my absolute favourite dessert, I always order it if it's on the menu. 😋

Georgyporky · 10/09/2023 19:31

So many of these I still cook/prepare at home. Liver & onions, avocado & prawns, coq au vin, etc

I remember a joke I heard on TV yonks ago.

Comedian reading from a postcard : -
"I'm sorry about your husband Mrs. Jones, but coq au vin is usually made with chicken. "

Trinity65 · 10/09/2023 19:33

Not RTFT so might be copies

Peach Melba
Alaska Pudding
Chicken in a Basket
Coq au van (no idea how to spell it)

thesnailandthewhale · 10/09/2023 19:35

Shadesofscarlett · 10/09/2023 19:35

Orange juice used to come in massive tins in the early / mid 70s, we used to have a small glass as a starter at home on Christmas Day. I loved it.

Knickerbocker glory

A cafe near me does them they're great and it's amazingly nostalgic

orangegato · 10/09/2023 19:38

Am ice cream in Indian restaurants that came in a plastic penguin head.

BlackForestCake · 10/09/2023 19:38

Black Forest gateau is not a complicated recipe – it is basically just a chocolate sponge with a cherry and cream filling and coated with cream – but it is quite technical because you have to cut the sponge into three layers without breaking them and then build them up again, and smooth cream all over the thing. It must have seemed very decadent in the 1960s with its extravagant use of cream and – gasp! – alcohol!

(No, I have never made one despite my username)

ErrolTheDragon · 10/09/2023 19:39

You could get this in Cafe Rouge a few years ago (our cafe rouge has since closed).

We've had onion soup and duck with orange sauce at one quite recently.

Whitebait is still widely available.
