Escaped convict - Anyone else slightly fascinated by how he's escaping capture?

I don't know why but this has captured my imagination. Daniel Khalife escaped prison by clinging to the underside of a delivery van. Now I'm wondering when did he let go? Where did he hide? Is it like the fugitive where he hides in a hen house out house and steals a doctor's uniform from a hospital? Where would you hide if you had to? Where do you get food and water and shelter?

@Hanlonsamazer The school was the one my DC went to at the time- They stopped using the back playground for a while.

Not sure if it’s still an issue as no longer there.

Cool. I’ll defer to your experience of prison life.

Is this a story with a happy ending?

I hope he came quietly

Cool. I’ll defer to your experience of prison life.

It was a local jail, a local school- I knew people who were there at the time- and drugs were a massive problem in that jail.

Hopefully not as bad now, but no longer in area.

Not going to divulge any more for confidentiality reasons.

"Cool. I’ll defer to your experience of prison life."

The male estate is very different to what you describe. Naturally. Drugs are widespread and those who don't have the means are encouraged to use spice. Then they are indebted and can be used themselves to ring things in, buy canteen, hide stuff etc.

Paul2023 · 10/09/2023 23:36

In my opinion this guy is pretty low level. Actually read what ‘ terrorism’ offences he’s committed. He had some information on serving British service personnel which is obviously from some sort of database.

Then he made a hoax bomb threat at his army base.

This is more of an immature kid that somehow lost his way rather than a terrorist. I don’t think he’s that dangerous at all.

A 21 year old stupid young man made a fool of the government and prison service and is is made out to be some sort of Bin Laden.

I think the authorities really exaggerated the facts about this young man just to try and tone down their incompetence.

ZadocPDederick · 10/09/2023 23:39

Random fact. This guy went to the same school as Keira Knightley. Presumably not at the same time, though.

Yes, the prison I mentioned is a male one, and drugs most definitely were very high value compared to 'on the street.'
There was a lot of mental illness /addiction there, too at that time.

What was really sad was seeing young men come out and they'd be looking to sell their striped jail shirt for pin money - I never bought one, but men seemed to be released without much support.

It's a shame the government have cut the services to the bone.

There were staff there who really did care.

oakleaffy · 10/09/2023 23:53

I have googled the prison, and a 2023 report says it is ''One of the most unsafe prisons in the country''

''The report said the prison was violent and riddled with drugs, some of which were delivered by drones to prisoners through cell windows, from which inmates had removed the glass under the noses of prison officers.
With serious staff shortages, inspectors said the prison was struggling to deliver any kind of regime and most men spent up to 22 hours a day locked in their cells.
Almost half of cells held two men, meaning they were very cramped. Some prisoners were held in single cells with no in-cell sanitation, sharing toilets in an appalling condition.
Despite the obvious effects of overcrowding, the capacity of the prison had actually been increased on several occasions since the last inspection.
'We cannot end up in a situation where men are simply warehoused in appalling conditions'

I actually feel sorry for him, he doesn’t exactly come across as a criminal mastermind or evil. He is also young and good looking so probably a prime target for any rapist that he ends up being housed with in the Cat A.

To a tiny extent I agree, physically dangerous as an individual, whilst escaped, probably not,

OTOH what he's charged with isn't trivial - if he compromised service members personal security playing fast and lose with the admin system (?JPA) he's got to answer for that, and of course bomb threats are never going to be brushed off as a bit of a laugh. There's also of course the third set of charges under the Official Secrets Act which if he is convicted of will almost certainly see him doing serious time.

I never saw him portrayed as a Bin laden but I'm sure the authorities were quite happy to let the Press run with all the comment about escape and evasion training.....(which didn't seem to do him any good).

Willmafrockfit · 11/09/2023 07:17

it was a minor charge i read that would have meant a 12 month sentence, he should have just kept his head down
but they did say this recent event wont jeopardize his case, so he wont serve a longer term, although i have no idea what the sentence is likely to be for attempted escape

I'm sure an an actual escape will add jail time - Even to ''use him as an example'' to others who might have the same idea.

If it was just a year in jail, he would have been far better just getting on with it- But his ill advised escape probably goes along with his poor decision making thus far.

Willmafrockfit · 11/09/2023 08:15

poor decision making, i agree @oakleaffy

sep135 · 21/09/2023 19:04

Yes, I couldn't quite work out his defence...

Suddenly I found myself tied to a catering lorry with no idea how I got there. I was going to hand myself in but someone asked me to deliver a Waitrose food bag for the meals on wheels service in Northolt as Mavis had an dental appointment with the hygienist.

EasternStandard · 21/09/2023 19:11

I thought what? At that too

helford · 21/09/2023 19:34

If he considers himself Not Guilty of the original charges, he may well believe he never escaped as he shouldn't have been in prison in the first place?

I think this too. As the charge is “escaping from lawful custody”
If he believes he’s innocent to the first charge then the custody won’t be lawful in his eyes

he sounds a pest

rileynexttime · 22/09/2023 10:35

I wonder if Belmarsh ,where he is now I believe, is better run than Wandsworth ?

More staff and it’s maximum security there.

I'd love to hear his explanation.

"M'lud, I felt weak then found myself on the floor then this piece of metal underneath the food truck carried me out the front door".

Dont forget that remand prisoners have way more privileges than sentenced ones. It could just be a way of maintaining those as long as possible. If he pleads guilty and is sentenced for this, his privs disappear overnight while he’s waiting for trial on the other counts.
