Escaped convict - Anyone else slightly fascinated by how he's escaping capture?

I don't know why but this has captured my imagination. Daniel Khalife escaped prison by clinging to the underside of a delivery van. Now I'm wondering when did he let go? Where did he hide? Is it like the fugitive where he hides in a hen house out house and steals a doctor's uniform from a hospital? Where would you hide if you had to? Where do you get food and water and shelter?

It's not fascinating. It's yet another sign of a failing state.

IsabelleSE19 · 07/09/2023 13:54

I'm pissed off with him as I'm drunk to France tonight and the Eurotunnel queues are a nightmare because of this .

This really made me laugh - hope the drink will help you deal with the long queue Carriemac 😁

ShirleyPhallus · 07/09/2023 13:57

London is huge and it’s so easy to be anonymous, he doesn’t have distinct features at all that it would be so easy to walk past him in the street and not realise

i suspect he’s been hidden in plain sight until he could make contact with his contacts and then scarpered

I'd been very surprised if he wasn't helped to escape. London is a big city and easy to hide in. Passengers leaving the UK yesterday were delayed as he was being looked for.

I don't want to derail the thread, but what happened to the couple the police and social services were looking for last year? Didn't they disappear in London? She was from a wealthy background, but dropped out of uni/college when she met him. He had spent time in prison in the US.

They caught them

No idea but I can’t get over the method of escape. Under a food van, dressed as a chef no less! Have we slippped back to the 1960s? It’s like an Ealing comedy plot. I’m only surprised he didn’t escape in a laundry hamper.

Being serious though, if he’s such a dangerous individual, why was he in such a low category prison?

Thought he was on remand? so not technically dangerous at all, innocent until proven guilty?

I suspect he went way over the top and could have just walked out, with a toy dog.

To be honest UK prisons are a disgrace, even a German court has refused to extradite a terrorist suspect because of how bad they are i.e hundreds of young prisons held in solitary, for 23 out of 24 hours, these are people who will be released...

Like everything else in the UK, broken.

Exactly who I've been thinking of Grin

StephanieSuperpowers · 07/09/2023 14:04

Did you ever see that programme on channel 4 (I think) called Hunted (or something)? People were set down and then had to make their way to a location, all the while being chased by security teams with access to all kinds of technology. It's a bit like that...

Thanks - I obviously missed that.

Well he'd definitely stand out dressed like that in this heat.

Although they'd be able to recapture him when he fainted from heat stroke.

JaneJeffer · 07/09/2023 14:04

That scene was hilarious excelled Grin

It's all very well Alex Chalk and Michelle Donelen ranting on about shoulda-been-Cat-A prisoners being held in Cat B prisons, but there's a shortage of prison places and prison staff owing to government underfunding that they've known about for years.

This government really has some chickens coming home to roost now.

Yep.

It also puts the proposal to change the law to try and force people who've been convicted to go to court for sentencing into a freshly irresponsible context. People think we have resources to spare for that, we can't even staff the prisons to an extent that stops terrorists escaping.

Abra1t · 07/09/2023 14:08

Fairly easy to navigate London. Useful landmarks and a river plus some stationery/bookshop shops still selling maps and atlases to glance at.

fioritura · 07/09/2023 14:12

Theres a video of his arrest on Twitter - he’s just chilling at Banbury train station of all places (not very good survival skills may I add)

EasternStandard · 07/09/2023 14:12

He’ll have people helping him. Terror suspect could be linked to others who are keen for him to avert justice

megletthesecond · 07/09/2023 14:13

He's obviously been hidden and whisked away by someone.

Although when they said "dressed like a chef" I keep thinking of the Swedish chef in the muppets.

US convict I read about yesterday. This prison looks very lackadaisical.

ZeppelinTits · 07/09/2023 14:27

Surely if his escape was planned with any level of awareness from 'his people' there would have been a car or van following the vehicle he escaped under, they'd have stayed with it til he had an opportunity to roll out and then immediately picked him up and he'd be gone. He won't be in the UK now.

CreationNat1on · 07/09/2023 14:33

He could shop lift food and clothes, especially from a busy market place.

rileynexttime · 07/09/2023 14:37

'Details have started to emerge of how terror suspect Daniel Abed Khalife fled HMP Wandsworth, with Justice Secretary Alex Chalk revealing "strapping" was found underneath the vehicle.

The 21-year-old was working in the kitchen and was wearing a chef's uniform, and is thought to have hidden beneath the food delivery van and held on to the straps to make his escape.'

Lovemycat2023 · 07/09/2023 14:42

I can’t help but imagine it like a Wes Anderson film, with the music in the background. I think it’s the chefs trousers.

MrMucker · 07/09/2023 14:42

That hanging under the vehicle and up to no good, Robert De Niro did it in Cape Fear too.
