Films that you point blank refuse to watch (or watch again)

I don't mean due to boredom I mean just utterly distressing:

NEVER. Kes. So a lonely little boy finds joy in an innocent bird who loves him back only for his cunt of a brother to kill it, right? I'll pass thanks.

Harry Brown. One of the most violent, depressingly upsetting films I've ever seen. Never again.

NEVER. A Serbian Film. No thanks. Googling the plot was horrific enough.

Dumbo. Never in my life have I wanted to jump through a screen to protect and adopt a cartoon character. Same with Fox & Hound.

I've not read the whole thread but I could never watch the most recent Point Break. There is only one Johnny Utah for me.

Yeah, I thought of that one, but it's a powerful watch, and I love Jodie Foster, so...

@TakemedowntoPotatoCity Oh, I love Gerry! Can happily sit and watch the lovely Matt Damon wending his way across the incredible landscapes for hours. I thought it was funny, especially with them substituting the name Gerry for loads of other words. I was tickled by the cheekiness of it - a film that refuses to entertain you, manipulate your emotions or give you any trite answers. It's a challenge to watch, I admit, but it's a favourite of mine.

I regret watching American Beauty. It had so much praise at the time, but it was revolting and disturbing.

Tonight1 · 06/09/2023 21:28

I watched Play Misty for Me with Clint Eastwood recently and seriously disliked it

foulksmills · 06/09/2023 21:58

Doctor Sleep. Hated that movie.
Particularly when they abduct the little boy and he asks if they're going to hurt him.

EarringsandLipstick · 06/09/2023 22:00

I avoided Changeling, with Angelina Jolie, for years, knowing I'd hate it (woman's son goes missing in 30s America, is found a long time later, but she insists it's not her son). Then it came on TV one night & I watched it intending to turn it off, I eventually did not before the most horrible scenes of child cruelty. God even writing about it upsets me.

There's loads of classic movies I've never seen, I hate violence so have never watched any Godfather movies, avoided most of Quentin Tarantino movies.

EarringsandLipstick · 06/09/2023 22:03

Another one I'd never re-watch is The Lost Daughter, with Olivia Colman (who is just weird in it) but it's Jessie Buckley's character (who is young Leda, Colman's character) that really upsets me, she is so vile to her DD.

It's made me not like Jessie Buckley at all, which is a bit unfair!

Gosh, I loved The Lost Daughter.

Gosh, I loved The Lost Daughter.

That's interesting! I hated it anyway because it was so silly & badly acted IMO but really hated young Leda's behaviour. She was so mean.

Catsmere · 06/09/2023 22:31

The Thing (John Carpenter’s remake). Nauseating special effects, and the poor dogs!

Is it wrong I’m using this thread to find some films to watch this weekend

i could never watch Marley and Me and could never watch watership down or Dumbo again

i have watched a Serbian film only after reading the synopsis. The synopsis is much more graphic than the film and played on my mind more. I wouldn’t watch it again

@DuesToTheDirt i'd say watch Requiem, it’s a great film and soundtrack but it will play on your mind afterwards

Same - I've made a list 🤷🏻‍♀️

NooNakedJacuzziness · 05/09/2023 21:05

I will never sit through Requiem for a Dream again - harrowing

That is my pick as well.... Utterly disturbing. I am surprised I managed to sit through it at all... It was over 20 years ago and some scenes are still etched in my mind.

@Gemmanorthdevon Vannily sky is very depressing/disturbing! I dont think Id watch it again, either.

I dont watch horror movies either, so all of those are NEVERs for me.

God. The rape scene in this is utterly harrowing. Not a film i could watch again.

I watched it at a friend’s house when I was 13. I was traumatised for years.

UnctuousUnicorns · 07/09/2023 10:06

I can't stomach violence or gore, so that rules out a lot of films for me. If it's only very occasional and I'm watching with DH, I'll cover my eyes until he tells me it's over (I know, I sound 3 rather than 53. 😅) But yeah, best avoided.

Also nothing with Adam Sandler in, made the mistake of watching The Wedding Singer with some freebie vouchers. Just as well it was free as it was awful.

Add Martyr to the list of horrific, never ever films. Only heard/read about it. There are some seriously sick puppies out there.

Things I've seen:
Sucker Punch
Clockwork Orange
Batman Begins (way overboard with the fire)

Things I haven't seen:
Anything with "saw" in the title.
Anything suggesting that hills have eyes.
Anything implying that humans can become trans-centipedes.
The one where the kid shoots Old Yeller at the end. Screw that.

I actually really like a good horror film but not the weird torture porn ones that were big for a while. And shooting the dog just isn't a mindset I can get behind.

I also love a good horror, but I prefer psychological horrors. I'm with you on the torture porn - I cannot and will not watch anything along those lines.

Many years ago (25+), I saw 'Man Bites Dog' which is utterly horrific and has stayed with me.

yellowsmileyface · 07/09/2023 10:41

Threads.

I generally love dark films and enjoy feeling unsettled, but Threads left me feeling depressed for days, which I suppose is the point! It's a brilliant film and very well executed, but once is most certainly enough.

I'd also never watch or re-watch any marvel or superhero films. Not my cup of tea at all, I just find them all mind numbingly boring.

Patchesofdrizzle · 07/09/2023 11:15

Pretty Woman - sounds like it paints a fairy tale picture of prostitution.

I like supernatural/semi supernatural, atmospheric chillers, even if they're a bit cheesy. Just no, or minimal red, please. Also, equal numbers of women and men being scared, please.

TheDogthatDug · 07/09/2023 11:21

The Cove. It's a documentary about an annual slaughter of dolphins that happens in Japan.

user9630721458 · 07/09/2023 11:37

@TheDogthatDug That sounds heart breaking, dolphins are so beautiful and intelligent as well. What's wrong with people? I watched Land of Hope and Glory, where people went undercover on UK farms and filmed the wanton abuse that goes on to animals. Some were even organic farms. Just horrifying. Could never watch again.
