I've looked in sport, and as it's the start of the season I'd love to congratulate/commiserate/complain about the quality of the coffee?

Anyone else with a rugby kid?

My fool of an U15 has headed off to his match this morning (having arranged himself a lift). I don’t think he’s actually taken so much as a coat. He did put skins on (unusually). He’s going to end up using his towel as a blanket.

Hopefully he’ll get to do a lot of running.

Mummyme87 · 26/11/2023 11:10

Both of our rugby sessions were cancelled due to frozen pitches. It has meant for an easy morning and got two loads of washing done!

Sparehair · 26/11/2023 13:25

DS Away at Taunton today. Great evenly matched game which DS’s team won 7-6. Cold but pitch not frozen and well drained!! DD still resting her shoulder but did manage netball training today so definitely on the mend.

Quick qu for fellow rugby mums- does anyone know of any girls development camps in the Christmas holidays or Feb half term? Ideally south or south/ west but some flex in that if it’s multi day.

My DD s u12 team got absolutely humped in their first League match, kept their heads up but just not quite enough.

Match tea was jacket spud beans and cheese though so my baby prop is happy enough!

Northampton Saints do residential and multi-day development camps for girls I think, but that might be too far north for you.

Ours got sausage, chips and gravy... proper Yorkshire grub!

Starting to come together as a team

from observation U12 is a tough age bracket because you have a few girls on each side who have played for years but a lot of new girls which makes the tackling and rucking pretty inconsistent- often then if a team has one or two players who really know what they’re doing or are just big and fast, they can just blast through the defence. Hope your dd isn’t too disheartened.

@Feralgremlin thanks- that possibly is too far but for multi day might work as we can stay over - I wfh PT hours so can normally fit these sorts of things in if a dc is keen.

Hi All, joining, not tentatively but all in. DS7 plays rugby and somehow DH has ended up coaching, I'm managing...whilst also dragging round a 3yo and 1yo. We don't mind at all...both benefitted from volunteers as kids and happy to pay it back (especially as DS benefits).

It was bloody cold today though. I don't always go with the little ones but had to today as met someone to do some admin. What's the best way to keep everyone warm? And for DS7 can anyone recommend a dry robe/rugga robe/change robe type thing? What's best value. Willing to pay for warmth (thought he was gonna shatter his teeth after the game today!) but don't want to overpay for brand name sake only.

Hi@KenIsAnAccessory . My DC have the “pri- robe” from Primark. From memory they are around 35-45 but they are great and do the job. Like you I just wasn’t prepared to spend that sort of money on something that might get lost by the end of the season. I also get them to wear a thermal base layer top from decathlon and if just training they often wear thermal leggings under shorts as well- most of their team do.

WarningOfGails · 27/11/2023 07:57

@Sparehair Exeter Chiefs might be doing something?

autumnleavesandrugby · 27/11/2023 18:17

Very gutted boys yesterday- got knocked out in their cup semi final. Still did very well to get that far though.

lostinabook · 27/11/2023 19:57

Absolutely this...my DD played up last season with 3 others but the rest are newbies. The team is coming together but it was one of those matches! Next one is next week and I think they will be rabid by then 🤣

IncomingTraffic · 27/11/2023 20:14

DS didn’t freeze to death but his team lost 21-0 or something. They were laying one of those teams that are all just enormous. Their smallest player was the size of our team’s biggest sort of thing. The boys played well. But… they still lost. Just how rugby goes sometimes.

PuttingDownRoots · 27/11/2023 20:17

This is going to sound a bit strange...

At an Away game... do you find that some clubs just feel a bit strange and unwelcoming? The game we had Sunday... its the youth section of a "Big" club (not Premiership but pretty high up). Fantastic facilities... it was a scaled down pitch for example, not sideways across a normal pitch. But it just felt so unwelcoming... and a lot of their players disappeared before the end.

Its actually the closest club to our house and I've never felt more pleased that DH went for the club he did!

PuttingDownRoots · 29/11/2023 07:32

I enjoyed watching practice last night. The U11/U12 coach is currently recovering from an Op, so they being covered by one of the older age groups coach. He looked more exhausted than them by the end as they ran rings around him. He looked almost traumatised by the experience. Kids that age can definitely smell weakness.

Sparehair · 03/12/2023 19:30

Imagine there were some frozen pitches this weekend but I’m from “darn sarf” so we just have soggy ones. When will it stop raining? 😫 DS had a local derby which they won fairly convincingly mainly due to this one kid who is just a try machine. Nothing for DD but she had a netball tournament. It’s interesting to see how playing rugby and netball is making her better at both sports- there’s more skills and strategy crossover than I’d maybe have thought but my friend had one of the red roses come to talk to the girls at her school and the red rose ( sorry not sure which one) agreed that it’s a good sport to play alongside due to improving your perception of space and needing to think a few passes ahead.

IncomingTraffic · 03/12/2023 19:46

Our game was cancelled because of snow. And no training because there was no last minute availability for indoor places even.

They’ve got a 7s tournament next weekend.

mamaduckbone · 03/12/2023 22:05

I hope those of you who had games today weren't frozen to death!

We've had a weekend off a ds1 is injured so didn't play yesterday - just a sprained ankle that's nearly better - and ds2 didn't have a game but even training was cancelled as the pitches were frozen.

We had an email tonight to say he's through to the U15s academy for our local premiership team though, so he's very chuffed!

Feralgremlin · 05/12/2023 07:26

Our match on Sunday got cancelled due to frozen pitches and training tomorrow evening is cancelled because of flooded pitches. This winter is going well 😂

That’s great news! How does the academy system work- do they field a team that your ds will no play for rather than his club or is it more focused on training camps/ days etc?

YesitsBess · 10/12/2023 08:34

No training this week due to weather. Now we're off for a league match! It'll be fine😂

Feralgremlin · 10/12/2023 08:37

No rugby for us this weekend as we all came down with Covid and can barely move out of bed. Hope everyone’s games go well!

PuttingDownRoots · 10/12/2023 09:08

DH has a Pitch Up this afternoon but DD has nothing.

Duckduckloose · 10/12/2023 09:17

Cancelled last week due to ice, cancelled this week due to rain!
Not a great season so far.

IncomingTraffic · 10/12/2023 09:57

We’re at a 7s tournament today. DS isn’t playing because he’s injured his finger (again). He’s getting teased about how they’ll be getting him some bubble wrap for Christmas.
