I've looked in sport, and as it's the start of the season I'd love to congratulate/commiserate/complain about the quality of the coffee?

Anyone else with a rugby kid?

Can I ask if anyone else's team (U15's) makes the boys change into "number ones" after every match?

You mean shirt and tie? Yes, DS had to from U12, girls from U14. I’m torn on it. If there’s a proper sit down meal where they actually talk to the other team I’m ok but sometimes they literally get a hotdog to take away and it’s just more laundry.

00BonneMaman00 · 15/09/2024 09:09

It's ridiculous!
They always get a hot dog type meal and don't chat to the other teams.
Yes exactly more bloody washing!
They're in uniform all week at school. It really pisses me off.

00BonneMaman00 · 15/09/2024 09:10

It's chinos, shirt & club tie here.

And 99% of the other teams don't do this.

Be really a interested to hear roughly where you are?

Here (south) clubs have sit down meal with Number 1's from U13/U14

Plated meals (cottage pie, pasta, lasagne, burgers and chips, etc) and all expected to sit together.

For me it is an absolute highlight and what makes rugby different to other sports.

Foe on the pitch friends in the bar.

My lad has so many friends in other teams because of spending time with them in the clubhouse.

BaconEggAndCoffee · 15/09/2024 09:57

First game of the season for us today, made the step up to U18's.

We are away today, leaving in a hour or so.

I am actually a bit nervous, big step up from U16 to U18, I wish we were home really as DH could attend as well.

Yes, from the start of juniors up.
Not always to the extent of a plated meal but always something to eat and they all shower and change into shirt and club tie. I really like it, and all the clubs round here do it. (Midlands)

Ds had his first match for his new team today and all seemed to go well. I didn't go but they won, he played well and came home happy. One of the lads broke his collarbone though 😬.

YesitsBess · 15/09/2024 19:42

Ours do and have since U13. Penalties for not having club tie as well.

SW here, under 13s have to change into polo shirt & sit down, over 13 have to wear shirt, chinos & club tie

Ryeman · 15/09/2024 22:19

We have shirt and tie from age u13 up. Always makes me laugh at the muddy hands poking out of the white cuffs, because none of them blimmin shower!!

autumnleavesandrugby · 17/09/2024 21:15

Shirt, club tie, proper trousers and from u15/u16 up proper shoes (not trainers) as well. I really like the rugby tradition post match meals and how they all spend 70mins thumping eashother to bits then chat away happily in the clubhouse afterwards. Some of them have played against each other for years now.

If there’s a home senior game on when the 18s have a home game most of our boys head round in shirt and tie to to catch the second half, I remember seeing them doing that when mine was 4 or 5 now he’s one of the big boys!

I love the quality look of muddy rugby socks sticking out of skinny trousers and formal shoes because they forgot to bring spare socks!

Any tips on buying international game tickets? I went into the international ticket ballot through our club & got 4 tickets for Twickenham in Nov but really I should have got 6 tickets! Confused as to how/where I can look for a further 2 tickets - anybody know how it all works?

PuttingDownRoots · 24/09/2024 20:22

Maasive excitement here... DH just told DD he bought tickets for the womans World Cup final next year!

Ah we’ve got them too!

YesitsBess · 29/09/2024 15:16

Had to use the 'backup boots' today. Just a note for other parents, wouldn't bother with Umbro, first wear...

If anyone has a recommendation for adult size 12 with feet so wide they're off the scale!

They have other choices as well but we like these.

Experienced one of the clubs mentioned above, first time ever.. they had no bacon, egg OR coffee.

Away game that was nearly 2 hours from home, apparently they don't ever have parent refreshments. Our club makes so much money out of parents I'm surprised they dont.

Comfortable win for our side today but my DC got injured in first five minutes, so no bacon, no game, no coffee, lots of driving.

YesitsBess · 29/09/2024 18:25

Thankyou @BaconEggAndCoffee , he had Decathlon boots last season so will switch back for the backup boots (we've had to go Canturbury for main boots as they're the only ones who cater for Hobbit feet).

I'd no idea some clubs don't offer proper scran! We have 2 cafes, coffee bar and a sit down dining room. Never been to a club that doesn't!

It will be facilities. Some teams don't even have clubhouses, or the lower team pitches are no where near the clubhouse.

First "game" of the season today.... DH said they had 30ish girls from a range of clubs for U12s.

WarningOfGails · 29/09/2024 20:31

@YesitsBess your club sounds unusual to me! The ones I’ve been to on our region all have a clubhouse but it’s nothing fancy.

It wasn't facilities, they had a clubhouse and kitchen.

I get that volunteering is a nightmare to organise, and that paying staff is a financial challenge. But it is a real shame. The social side is such a highlight of rugby.

PuttingDownRoots · 29/09/2024 21:18

For our home club.... the kitchen is too busy with match lunches AND the thriving Sunday lunch business.. they make a whole lot more money out of Sunday carvery than bacon sandwiches!

Mark up on bacon sandwich is massive, but you are still offering something and I'd imagine coffee. It is financially difficult for clubs at the moment, catering helps plug the hole.

Setyoufree · 30/09/2024 14:11

First match for the U12s girls this season yesterday. So proud of them all - they're basically a new team as they're made up of girls coming from all sorts of mixed U11s teams, and have only been playing together for a month. They worked so well together. Really keen and brave, and great teamwork! We had enough for a full team too which is fantastic.
