I've looked in sport, and as it's the start of the season I'd love to congratulate/commiserate/complain about the quality of the coffee?

Anyone else with a rugby kid?

DDs training and my match cancelled today due to waterlogged pitches. Quite glad really as it was our Christmas social yesterday so I'm feeling a little delicate 🙈

WarningOfGails · 11/12/2023 18:54

I would like to hear more about the DPP and academy and county and how they all work too!

not that I think DS is gonna be a stellar rugby player but DD’s best friend/boyfriend is & I would like to know a bit more about how it all works rather than nodding and smiling!

We skipped the match yesterday. My birthday party & I knew we wouldn’t want to get there on time on Sunday morning!

Happy Sunday rugby mums - last match of the year today after 2 weeks cancelled, and a strong win for our U15s side. Ds1 still injured but also up to his neck in A-level mocks so has taken a break until the new year.

@Sparehair sorry for the delayed response, but the way our academy programme works (Tigers) is at U15s and U16s they train with the Junior academy at their development centre but still play for their own clubs - they cut the group further after festivals at the end of each season. That will start for ds after Christmas.

The final group who are selected to progress to the U18 academy study post 16 at one of their affiliated schools/colleges and do approx 12 hours of rugby a week alongside their studies. They play for the U18s team and can no longer play for their home club.

It's quite exciting and also a bit bemusing - we've not been pushy with it at all - we just wanted him to do something to build his confidence when he was a shy little 7 year old and one of the dads at school was a coach and encouraged him to go along. It's all come from him - he lives and breathes rugby!

For the Mums with Secondary age players....

What age did you find they had to switch from Junior (10&under) to Adult (11+) Gum shield? I know the obvious answer is probably 11... or would it be a bit older for girls? DD is nearly 11.

pumpkintart · 18/12/2023 17:41

DS changed at 12 he has quite a small mouth - makes a lot of noise though

PuttingDownRoots · 18/12/2023 17:45

If it went on volume she would need a giant sized one... shes the one whose job it is to call out stuff to the team... even the Seniors Coach has commented o her ability! 😂

WarningOfGails · 18/12/2023 18:01

DD is 12 and still a junior size.

Ha ha- my DD is the same. She is such a Foghorn despite being quite a tiny girl.

I found that you're better off going slightly too small than slightly too big as if too big they are uncomfortable and then they keep taking them out/ holding them between their front teeth in between tackles. I have occasionally also trimmed the back down to fit better.

I'm a rugby player rather than a rugby mum, but would always recommend a gumshield done from a dental mould rather than a boil and bit one.

They're so much more comfortable and not as bulky.

I got my last one from an online company that send a kit out to male a mould of your teeth, and then then they make a gumsheild from that.

I totally agree re quality ad fit but the trouble with kids is that they (1) lose gum shields at least every 3 weeks and also (2) lose baby teeth which means they no longer fit Grin

YesitsBess · 18/12/2023 18:46

Any West Sussex parents with a DD (or mum!) who might like to take part in a fun non-contact training session with Jess Breach in January please stay tuned. I have am exciting announcement coming up once I've got some extra details!

Yes we are going through gum shields at a fair rate here. He keeps losing and growing teeth which means they don’t fit properly after a few weeks. I’ve tried reboiling but doesn’t work that well.
I think he’ll need a brace in the next few years so will see what the dentist advises then.

My son got a specific gun shield from the orthodontist when he had braces in.

Any Mums out there who played Rugby before becoming a mummy and would love to get back training/playing?
I manage Chobham Women in Surrey (near Woking) and would love to hear from you if you’re interested in coming to a training session.

Weepingwillows12 · 06/01/2024 08:50

Morning. Looks like the kids rugby will be on astroturf again this week so touch rugby due to waterlogged pitches which is a shame. My 10 year old has missed a few weeks due to winter colds and was really looking forward to contact and mud.

Feralgremlin · 06/01/2024 11:45

We missed our last training session in December as we all had covid, but the two sessions prior to that were called off due to frozen pitches and then flooded pitches. Weds training got cancelled due to flooded pitches again and I don’t think tomorrows is likely to go ahead. I so wish we had an indoor pitch 😩

YesitsBess · 06/01/2024 12:55

Back into the mud tomorrow for our first game of 2024. I will be spending my birthday waking up at fuck-a-doodle-doo O'clock and standing on a muddy field cheering 😎

Just training for DS tomorrow although pitch is touch and go as crazy flooding round here.

PuttingDownRoots · 06/01/2024 15:31

Still waiting for a pitch update for morning.

mamaduckbone · 06/01/2024 18:44

Ds1 was back this afternoon for Colts after 6 weeks off with a sprained ankle - he played well considering the amount he's eaten and drunk over Christmas!

Fingers crossed ds2's match will be on tomorrow - it's away so we'll have to wait on their pitch inspection. It's sooo wet.

YesitsBess · 07/01/2024 16:27

A decisive win today, our opposing team had their heads up and fought to the last play, absolute credit to their team & coaches.

My 13 year old son has played rugby for 8 years. Although small for his age, he's in the A team and used to be fearless. Over the last 3 months, he has become fearful when playing teams with boys substantially bigger than him. He opened up this week and admitted that he is frightened of getting a serious injury. Some of the boys he's up against are 8 stone heavier and 18" taller than him, so it hurts when they land on him! His school work has deteriorated and he tells me he spends half of his waking time thinking and worrying about rugby.

It's got to the point now where he is choosing which games to play, based on who the opposition is. If I'm honest I can let the club rugby pass. He attends a rugby focussed school, where they train 4 times a week and play matches/festivals at least once a week. They played a 7's festival last Saturday and he refused to go on against 2 teams. There's another festival tomorrow and he wants to be off school sick. Anxiety levels are high and I don't know what to do.

He is worried that if he tells school the truth, he will lose his friends (the rugby A team) and that school will spend extra time on him, trying to get his confidence back, which he doesn't want. Anyone been in a similar position? Sorry for the long post, it's my first time so please be gentle.
