What dumb thing has taken you forever to realise?

Nights in white satin song was playing in the car today. A favourite song of mine so I was singing along and it dawned on me that the word is "nights," not "knights".

Whole song makes much more sense now 😳

I had a similar issue with "Toyota, the car in front" but it's a Nissan I'm behind (or other car brand).

And in the film Winnie the Pooh where the gopher says "I'm not in the book" and I thought it was the phone book😬 for decades!

I promise I'm intelligent.

I'm sitting here giggling with tears streaming down my face. DH is bemused Grin.

For years I thought Bat out of Hell was battery hen and when I was told the correct name I didn't believe it. It still sounds like battery hen!

My mum thought the lyrics "on a silver black phantom bike" from Bat our of hell was " a Cilla Black fan on a bike" which we will never let her forget.

That artic lorries weren’t special lorries that delivered in the Artic and Alaska😁

The clue to this is that it's not 'the Artic', it's 'the Arctic'!

winewolfhowls · 26/08/2023 23:12

When I was a kid I thought ' to let' signs were pointing out public toilets

SM4713 · 26/08/2023 23:12

I thought the same about Tia on the end of lots of posts online (for others also unaware it actually stands for, thanks in advance)

WHAT!!! OMG!!! I grew up abroad, but lived in the UK 25+yrs and actually thought TIA at the end of a post was Ta (pronounced tar), as in thanks, the same as you'd say to a toddler 'give mummy the toy, ta'. I just assumed writing it at TIA was some odd was of spelling it! Mind blown.😳

This particular meme was when I found out there was no trombelese…

What dumb thing has taken you forever to realise?
The6thQueen · 26/08/2023 23:13

@Talisin
brilliant 🤣

spudnix · 26/08/2023 23:13

Ok so I used to be terrified of popadoms as a child. I fully thought they where a type of mutant crisp that grew on its own overnight.

Albarinoqueen · 26/08/2023 23:14

My sister thought that coffee tables ( nest of tables ) were called Nescafé tables!! She was 40 before she realised.

Tenerife is a country?

Tenerife is not a country, it is one of the Canary Islands which are all part of Spain.

morelippy · 26/08/2023 23:16

I think that it's time to share this. It always makes me laugh!

'We are Family' is ruined forever now! 😆
'I'm begging you for birdseed!' Grin
'I believe that the hot dogs go on.......... ' 😂 Another song wrecked!
'I can't believe you kiss you cock at night!' 😆

Thanks for sharing. I was howling at this. I LOVE Peter Kay!!! Smile

Oh another one for me... I was about 40 before I realised HOLLAND is NOT a country!!! Blush

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 26/08/2023 23:19

Now you can have another one - about 'epiphany', not 'epithany' Grin

I used to think freight was pronounced fright, and barista was barrister.

For ages I thought there was a US state called Arkansaw in addition to Arkansas.

Though I genuinely get annoyed when people are sniffy about mispronunciation of words, it often means they're only seen them written down. I was a voracious reader as a child, who didn't have an especially cultured upbringing, so I learnt a lot of words from reading, which is no bad thing ime.

I'm pretty sure I've heard language queen Susie Dent make the same argument, and rightly so, no one should ever be made feel bad for learning by reading.

Lyrics: I thought Mary on a Cross Ghost were singing "trying to make macaroons" and the obvious one bohemian rhapsody and the poor boy with his pork sausages

Cantrushart · 26/08/2023 23:24

I thought Knights in White Satin was about the KKK.

Yeah true, but this thread is really only light hearted, and is people laughing at their OWN mistakes! Like many others on here, I did always pronounce the word 'hyperbole' as 'hyper-bowl' until about 5 years ago, (instead of hy-per-berlee.) Always said 'Yosemite' right though, coz of watching Yosemite Sam with my dad as a child! Grin

Dd5 pointed out that cars have a white license plate in front and a yellow one in the back. I was 38 at the time.

Didn't realise raisins are just thirsty grapes.

I've also recently learned that when you see 25% next to the rain picture on your weather app, it doesn't mean there's a 25% chance of rain. It means 25% of your area will experience rain. Or does that equate to the same thing? I'm not very bright.

That depends on the app - some use one, some use the other (from memory, I think the area version is more common in US forecasts and the chance of rain one un UK forecasts).

They aren't exactly the same, but in terms of the risk of you personally being rained on they are near enough.

It is isn't it? Just another name for the Netherlands?

bellocchild · 26/08/2023 23:27

That "Down yonder green valley where the stream lets me under" was not some sort of aquatic crossing place like a reverse ford.

icebearforpresident · 26/08/2023 23:27

It’s not KP nuts, but it is K peanuts.

(literally realised this last week)
