What dumb thing has taken you forever to realise?

Nights in white satin song was playing in the car today. A favourite song of mine so I was singing along and it dawned on me that the word is "nights," not "knights".

Whole song makes much more sense now 😳

I had a similar issue with "Toyota, the car in front" but it's a Nissan I'm behind (or other car brand).

And in the film Winnie the Pooh where the gopher says "I'm not in the book" and I thought it was the phone book😬 for decades!

I promise I'm intelligent.

"You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille
With 5 hundred children, and a crop in the field"

Eventually I realised it was 5 hungry children...

I thought it was "five hundred children, a dog and a seal" 😂😂

allthehops · 26/08/2023 22:32

Also, my imaginary knights just kept on riding day and night, because they were never reaching the end! 😂

I've embarrassed myself many times mispronouncing words I've only seen written. When getting the HPV virus as a teen the nurse asked me if I understood what it was for and I confidently said it was for the Human Pa-pillow-ma Virus. She didn't laugh, but I cringed after when I heard it pronounced correctly.

My family did laugh when I expressed a wish to travel to America and visit 'Yose-uh-mite' Blush

Yosemite used to be one of my favourite passwords, it caused all sorts of problems when I had to say it over the phone, I was often told it was wrong.

How is it pronounced? That's what it is in my head!! (I did open university and blame mispronunciation on that a LOT)

Song lyric wise, I only recently found out it’s not ‘my love has got no money, he’s got his trombolese’, which I blindly accepted without ever questioning wtf a trombolese is.

It’s actually ‘he’s got his strong beliefs’.

I thought he had dungarees... and had to look it up!

@WiddlinDiddlin That dandelion time lapse video is awesome thank you! Smile

I thought meme was pronounced me-me for a long time. Thankfully I never said it out loud before I learned it was meem.

That the little piggy going to market wasn't going shopping.😥

Oh my days! This has ruined my childhood, here's me thinking that the piggy going to market was going shopping. How did I not know!?

I always thought it was trampolines. My love has got no money he's got his trampolines.

Yo-seh-mutt-ee (I think!)

LavenderLaughs · 26/08/2023 22:35

I’d always assumed it was Knights in White Satin - in my head it’s been a vague mish mash of troubadours, crusaders, Richard the Lionheart, Robin Hood and ladies with the pointy hats and floaty veily bits. And now I find out that’s it’s just sleazy 1960s musos sweatily rolling round in slippery sheets on a circular bed on a shag pile carpet. And no doubt a mirror on the ceiling.

I only realised recently that thunder and lightning weren't two completely separate things. I didn't know that the thunder was the noise of the lightning. I haven't confessed that to anyone. Until now Blush

What!!?? Is that true?!

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/08/2023 22:37

I thought the song was "500 children and a crappy old field ".

The6thQueen · 26/08/2023 22:38

@DameCurlyBassey
pasted from my earlier post;
thunder is the sound the air makes as it rushes into the partial vacuum created by the lightning bolt (burns at 50000 degrees Fahrenheit, 3 times hotter than the sun) burning through the air it passes through. As the air cools it creates a partial vacuum, which makes the air rapidly expand and contract, basically the air column is a bit like a drum and the sound reverberates as a crack. As the vibrations gradually fade, this makes the rumbling noise that can linger.

Super Trouper beans are going to Blimey!
I had no idea where Blimey was (it sounded Irish to me), but the beans were definitely Heinz in my mind.

I used to think the world was in black and white because of the films and photographs… makes me cringe now

If it makes you feel a bit better it was a fairly uncolourful world compared with today!

Echio · 26/08/2023 22:24

Was far too old to realise all of these are wrong:

We three kings of Orientar
Life is butter dream
To all intensive purposes
And Jamiroqaui 'got canned heat in my heels tonight, Big Ben'

Also discovered too late in life...
Capers are nasturtium seed pods
Timbuktu exists, as does Tipperary (I thought they were both fictional places)

When I was a child and we went through Tipperary towards our holiday destination, I thought I had gone through a magical place that only existed in a song 🤣. Took me a few visits to realise that it's a real place.

The6thQueen · 26/08/2023 22:41

I remember seeing ‘Pennsylvania’ on a car number plate in the US and proudly telling my dad, that’s where Dracula lives. He about died laughing

Not me but my friend this one.She kept saying to us,how come this person gets so many letters sent in to problem pages, has so many issues etc.The person she was referring to was Anon.Hahahaha we fell over laughing as we told her it was Anon for Anonymous not a person called Anon with a fetish for writing to problem pages etc.

I'm splitting 😂
