Can you smell weed?

I can. (Skanky neighbours.) I seem to smell it most places now though. Much more frequently than just fags - hardly ever smell tobacco these days.

Is this just how things are now? ☹️

I smell pockets of it when I’m running in my town. I hate the smell and worry the prevalence will lead to increased mh problems including schizophrenia and psychosis. Can’t understand the desire to do it and smell like that. Potheads rarely come across as impressive people in my experience.

Considering how much more dangerous is alcohol, etc I wonder why people drink more

icebearforpresident · 20/08/2023 08:49

Occasionally I get wafts of it in the street but not in a regular basis.

I used to work in a lettings agency and people would quite often come into the office to pay their rent in cash. Including the students who used to like ‘the odd joint’. They never smelt like it, the house was fine too. The £450 cash they used to bring to the office on the other hand 🤢

How do you define 'dangerous'? Have you experienced people with psychotic episodes or uncontrolled schizophrenia?

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 20/08/2023 08:51

It's everywhere now, but not all of it is actually weed these days. People vape CBD oil, and other cannabis-smelling things.

FastandLoose · 20/08/2023 08:52

Dont get it that much where we live now. Main memory of visiting Seattle was the constant reek of weed. I’d be fine with legalisation if it wasn’t something that affected me but it’s a massively antisocial habit. I enjoy not coming home from a night out as I always had to as a teen stinking of smoke, and don’t want that replaced with something even stinkier.

Exactly this

Perfect28 · 20/08/2023 08:53

@TeenLifeMum some impressive people might be 'pot heads', you just wouldn't know

I had no idea that MJ had a particular smell until kind of recently. I don't know if that's because reefers truly didn't smell when I was a stoner (1980s) or due to my previous bad sense of smell. I've spent my life not noticing smells that others commented on. My ability to think I can identify MJ smell has improved a lot in last 1-2 yrs.

I smell MJ all the time recently !! There's a specific neighbour (nice man but terrible resting bitch face) who often reeks. I can't tell if this development is my faulty olfactory senses tricking me or if it's in fact real. Yesterday it was very whiffy (3pmish) at the roadies' campsite at Earlham park in Norwich.

MJ? Wow, that’s a throwback. Peace and love……..

ChaToilLeam · 20/08/2023 08:57

I smell it all the time in the street, in the park… 🤢 Absolutely hate the smell of the stuff.

FatNoMoreSue · 19/08/2023 19:24

Yes. It smells like dirty rabbit hutch to me.

Perfect description! I was trying to explain to DM the smell so will tell her this later.

Readthebooks · 20/08/2023 09:04

I'm not sure if it's more prevalent or not. Years ago everyone smoked hash which had a completely different smell, not as strong and didn't linger the way weed does. My older hippie friends said hash disappeared at the start of the pandemic and so now everyone smokes home grown, either their own or from UK farms. Easier than smuggling.

… or hamster/mouse/rat cage… in fact before I realised what the smell actually was I used to assume I was passing a place animals used as a toilet 😄

For the record I'm not minimising cannabis, and it is legal in some countries and states.

One prime example the figures of the number of accidents caused by drink driving vs people on cannabis ?

The number of convictions of people for alcohol vs cannabis etc ?

Overall yes i know there are dangers with cannabis, but it could be debated that alcohol is far worse.

quiteathome · 20/08/2023 10:57

Yes. There are pockets. It seems to be all day. Not just an evening thing. Smoking it all day can't be healthy. Plus the general risks of smoking and the psychological risks of cannabis.

Both alcohol and weed can be harmful to health. We shouldn't minimise the risk of either.

I hate the smell of weed

LivLongAndProsper · 20/08/2023 11:08

Yes. Everywhere. My kids constantly point it out to me.

TeenLifeMum · 20/08/2023 11:16

@Perfect28 perhaps but in my personal experience, I went to a grammar school. Some of the high achievers may have tried pot or done it on occasion but the regular users were obvious. Those who use regularly and are in good jobs tend to be the ones who got their jobs through contacts and having family wealth.

TeenLifeMum · 20/08/2023 11:18

@Hawkins009 the dangers of alcohol tend to be more immediate and obvious. Developing paranoia over time could be just as harmful but less immediate so people minimise the impact.

brokenlore · 20/08/2023 11:43

hawkins a breathalyser test is quick and easy to administer. I think you'd find if pot was tested for as regularly the results wouldn't be so dissimilar. We were on holiday in the West Country a few years back, there was a report in the local paper about a bloke who had totalled his car, when the police asked what happen he claimed there were octopuses 🐙 in the road...hmmmm as high as kite me thinks!

I can understand and respect your perspectives.
As for octopuses, after reading different unexplainable and supernatural books I think I'd er on the side of omg. But not presume anything straight away.

Perfect28 · 20/08/2023 12:06

@TeenLifeMum I think that's biased, judgemental and inaccurate. But that's fine, you believe what you want. 😊

BlondeScarySpice · 20/08/2023 12:24

Nope, I have a neurological condition that has affected my sense of smell. I work in the property section of the police and when the officers seize plants from cannabis factories the team all complain about how the whole building smells but I can’t smell anything.

ItLooksLikeChickenSoItMustBeChicken · 20/08/2023 12:25

Never had the smell of weed on my street. A police officer lives directly opposite me Grin

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 20/08/2023 12:36

Almost constantly. I live next door to dealers though. Used to live next door to coke heads. The stoners NEVER give me any issues. The coke heads on the other hand were an absolutely nightmare.

TeenLifeMum · 20/08/2023 15:02

@Perfect28 as I said, this is my personal experience. A judgement based on what I’ve seen so clearly bias to my friendship groups and experiences through work (in a large hospital trust). Yes, I do judge people who take drugs and anyone who says they don’t is lying. Humans judge each other, it’s how we chose who to interact with and not a bad thing.

Before lockdown, I was visiting a local hydroponics store. I was intrigued to see a family - mum, dad and two kids (one of each) under 10 getting some supplies in.

I did some back of the rizla packet (well, what I had left of it) calculations around the density of hydroponics suppliers within the area, and the volume of sales they needed to be achieving to remain solvent, and concluded that either people can't get the chillies they want from the shops, or home grown cannabis is a thing.

As a friend says: "I grow my own - don't want to mix with criminals". Which echoes the motto "dump the dealer".
