Is the mullet haircut now in fashion for boys?

We live in the SE and I've never seen a boy/teen with a mullet haircut. Recently visited family in the North and about 50% of the boys/teens seem to have mullets! I was really shocked. These boys were of the public school/Rugby playing variety so not sure if it's just a little bubble of mullets in that section of society or if it's becoming a general fashion?

One of my DS friends (age 14) is currently sporting a mullet. It looks awful, but apparently that's a thing at the moment.

Sometimeswinning · 16/08/2023 12:45

Yes. All my Ds's friends are sporting them. I'm not sure they would like the term Mullet!

Moonberri · 16/08/2023 12:47

What do they call it if not a mullet?

My almost eighteen year old son has one.

It's awful.

My almost eighteen year old son has one.

It's awful.

Grammar school, more jujitsu than rugger type of boy.

Yogagrandmum · 16/08/2023 12:49

My 15yr old grandson would like curly hair…

Yogagrandmum · 16/08/2023 12:49

I have very curly hair and as a teenager longed for straight hair, just seems odd.

seven201 · 16/08/2023 12:50

Perms for boys are back in fashion too. I think both more of a thing up north but some down south too.

x2boys · 16/08/2023 12:50

I have a 16 year old but he has long hair and doesn't follow fashion ,so.I'm not aware where in
Is it really it was bad enough the first time !
Lets hope the don't bring back the 80,s perms for girls!

DivingForLove · 16/08/2023 12:52

Massive thing in the rugby world at the moment - lots of the pros have them so the boys are following suit.

cstaff · 16/08/2023 12:52

Oh say it isn't true - do they not realise that this is one of the things that lads from the 80s get slagged off about if old photos are shown.

Begsthequestion · 16/08/2023 12:52

Yep mullets are in.

Skullets for the real rebellious kids.

And mushroom perms with shaved sides for the younger ones apparently.

WhisperingHi · 16/08/2023 12:53

Perms have been a big thing for boys for a while in my area in SE.

Now it's all about the floppy boyband curtains.

Whatsthepoint1234 · 16/08/2023 12:53

I’m in East Anglia and lots of boys at my sons state secondary school have mullets, not just the rugby players! In fact ds has a mullet and he likes computers and ww2 so not really the sporty alpha type.

BetsyBobbins · 16/08/2023 12:53

My husband took my 14 DS to the barber to get one as he had been wanting his hair like that. I was against it as I thought it would look ridiculous and sadly I wasn't wrong. All he looks like right is a redneck straight out of the 80s 😭

HamBone · 16/08/2023 12:54

We were in the SW recently and saw several mullets- DD (18) confirmed that they’re in at the moment. I think they’re hideous. 😂

Whatsthepoint1234 · 16/08/2023 12:55

To add ds doesn’t really care about fashion but his friend has a mullet so he followed suit. I haven’t seen any perms in our area though!

Moonberri · 16/08/2023 12:47

What do they call it if not a mullet?

My son just asks for them to do it short on the side and scissor it on top. I will inform him though that's what it is 🤣

Moonberri · 16/08/2023 12:56

Oh gosh I had hoped it was a weird bubble. My brother still cringes about his school photo with a mullet when he was 14/15. To be fair it's my parents' fault for putting it up on the wall!

Sorry but it just looks SO bad 😬

Business at the front, party at the back!!

Ozgirl75 · 16/08/2023 12:58

It’s very fashionable in Australia too. Awful! Most of the private schools have banned it as it has such feral connotations over there.
so funny seeing prom photos with these beautiful girls all done up, with these mulleted roughnecks on their arm, sometimes with that awful porn moustache too!

Bernadinetta · 16/08/2023 12:59

The longer hair permed/curly on top and short on the sides for boys is called “meet me at McDonald’s haircut” (google image search it!)

DivingForLove · 16/08/2023 12:59

@Moonberri oh I totally agree they look bloody awful! Our boys both play - neither of them have gone for the mullet but lots of their friends have so I have to stifle giggles every time they come over 😂

Bbq1 · 16/08/2023 13:00

17 year old ds and is a rocker and has lovely long naturally curly hair. Je has friends with mullets though and they call it a mullet.
