...the Brexit vote, given how it has disadvantaged those children without dual nationality?

I'm from NI, so very fortunate that mine still have FOM. I'd be raging if anyone took that away from them.

That is some demented frothing bilge @Remembermynamealways You sound thoroughly unpleasant. Bloody hell. Straight out of a Communist manifesto.

I have seen this Britain First lover all over any post that is relevant to Brexit and anyone who speaks out against the Tories. It claims to leave the UK if the Tories leave the next election.

God Bless the UK if the EDL is threatening to leave this great union.

I have absolutely no idea what you are on about! What is EDL?

Congratulations

You might have written the stupidest post ever.

Think you missed the poster who thought we were no longer European.

Aye, you love the UK so much you're already plotting to leave.🙄

And no matter what happened you knew you'd be alright @Remembermynamealways?.

Because you can afford to relocate halfway across the world. You can afford to buy visas, you have enough in the bank to pay for flights, relocation fees and advice.

Not so me and my children. Not so all the poorer WC kids you claim to care about. Brexit fucked my country. Don't let the door hit your arse on your way out.

At this point, you are boring. All of your posts are at odds with anything a decent and rationally minded person thinks. I personally think are you ridiculous and stupid. However, I would find you mildly interesting if you follow through with your threat to leave if Labour wins the next election. Do let us know where you go @Remembermynamealways

TooBigForMyBoots · 10/08/2023 21:04

I would like this opportunity to thank @Remembermynamealways for giving me insight into the mind of the unapologetic Brexiteer in 2023.

Thanks.ThanksGrin

Imagine you are an European company based in France.
You advertise a rile and you have 4 candidates. 3 people from eu countries and 1 from the UK. For the UK person you will have to jump through multiple hoops. Would you bother or would you shortlist the other 3?

Now imagine you are a US firm based in New York. You want to start building your European bae and are advertising for someone to lead that. Two people apply. One british, one French. The British person has limitation to the work they can fo in EU countries including number of days. The French person doesn't. Who would you employ?

And not even thinking about the benefits we got from people building their careers and companies basing themselves in the UK as we were seen as the gateway to Europe. Now we're just an island

The word was trapped, no-one is preventing anyone from leaving.

LadyWithLapdog · 10/08/2023 23:19

It might be a feeling, a sentiment of being trapped. Sometimes people use words in a more metaphorical way etc. Jesus.

sweetgingercat · 11/08/2023 01:37

The Tories lied and cheated to protect their wealth in tax havens and we are the ones to suffer, in so many areas of our lives. Hopefully it will be reversed

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/08/2023 01:47

FoM is dependant on your government granting it to you by way of a passport and your arrival being granted by application and approval, a Visa, from the country you wish to visit.

Britons had more freedom before Brexit. If it's English speakers you want, you can get them them from Ireland with their access to the EU. Brexit made the UK weak on the global stage. We were a big fish. Now we are a small fish floundering, with no sense of direction on the edge of the Atlantic.

I work in financial services/investing and London remains one of the key financial centres. (One of my friends is a derivatives trader and splits his time between London and New York, but never Europe). In terms of GDP, we're the sixth highest (ahead of all the European countries bar Germany).

While Biden isn't as pro-U.K. as his predecessors, the US and U.K. have historically had close cooperation, particularly militarily. That hasn't changed.

I voted Leave as did most of my friends. All graduates, some of us with professional qualifications on top, all high earners. The thick racist Leave voters rhetoric is so lame; I respect your right to have a different view without resorting to insults.

Genuinely, the handwringing, fury and small fish floundering type comments on MN are not reflective of people I meet, even the remain voters. Most of us don't speak a European language fluently enough to want to live or work there. I'd rather my kids went to the US, Canada or Australia if they want to do a year abroad in their degree.

If I had to name my top three concerns for our country, strength or otherwise on the global stage wouldn't be among them...

onefinemess · 10/08/2023 08:24

Yeah, that's the problem though. You can't just move, and getting a visa isn't as easy as you seem to believe it is.

How do you think people in other parts of the world manage?

This is no place for a sensible answer 😁

LadyWithLapdog · 11/08/2023 07:44

People are not concerned or caring till it slaps them in the face. Even then they’ll find ways to justify it to themselves. Such as it’s worse elsewhere. Or they don’t have kids. Or theirs are geniuses who’ll walk into a top job at the United Nations etc.

ah yes, when you have no actual facts on your side wave the flag, promise Elysian fields, chuck a bit of bread and supply the circus.

And shift all your own money offshore.

Lol at all the rich people coming onto a thread about the damage Brexit has done to WC kids to tell us they're alright Jack.Hmm

Well we are ok, for various reasons we actually made money from the Brexit process. It also spurred us on to get dual nationality for our DC. It has had no direct negative effects on us at all.
However I still hate it, I hate how it’s disadvantaged a lot of people and I hate the change it has made to us as a country. We are going to leave when DS finishes school

CloudPop · 11/08/2023 15:32

Agreed grass. It’s a non issue here now. I can’t believe people still post about it. We could liberate huge sectors from bureaucracy, and actually become much more nimble. I am confident that the future looks bright. Some people will whinge, and always will. I tend to tune out. My grandparents would be so proud of us, that I do know, but I did this for ku children and to return to a true democracy..
