DD took morning after pill then had sex again!

Is there a chance she could get pregnant? She absolutely does not want to be pregnant but for some reason thought that taking MAP once would protect her from all unplanned pregnancies this cycle. She is in a right state. She's 18 and her boyfriend is lovely (also 18); they both agree they are too young for parenthood. She would have an abortion if she was pregnant but would obviously rather not have to go through this. The unprotected sex (apparently the condom fell off) happened only a few days after her period finished, so she took it at the most effective time from what I can tell. She's now coming up to when her period would normally be due but has been told it might be late. She had unprotected sex the second time about 2 weeks after the first time / after she took the MAP.
I can't find out if Levonelle stops ovulation entirely or just delays it, different websites saying different things, so I don't know what to say to her!

I could weep with the stress!

Thank you

they are both 18. Tell them with short words: condoms condoms and the pill and condoms condoms

the MAP won't necessarily stop a pregnancy, afaik, but they are acting like stupid idiots. There is enough information out there that 18 year olds and under can access.

iamruth · 09/08/2023 18:30

I would say that there is always a chance. I would do a test on the day she would normally expect her period as a minimum if it doesn’t come at the “normal” time.

flowersfortea · 09/08/2023 18:33

Yes she could still have become pregnant. MAP not 100% anyway and doesn’t protect for the next time either. If it is still <5 days from second unprotected sex, she could have copper coil for emergency contraception and this could then stay in for ongoing protection. Otherwise it’s a case of doing pregnancy test if next period late, and again a week later if first one negative but still no period. Assume she has realised now she needs to get some solid contraception sorted for next time….

She’s an idiot. It delays ovulation. The whole point of it is to delay ovulation for a few days to allow the sperm to die. It will not protect her 2 weeks later, which is right around there time she would be ovulating. She could very well be pregnant.

Take an early test. Test again if her period is late. And educate her. Idiotic behaviour.

continentallentil · 09/08/2023 18:35

Ah - youth.

She needs to do a test because she could be. She should also perhaps consider the pill..

Kernsworld · 09/08/2023 18:36

If it protected you for one whole cycle, then none of us would be taking a daily oral contraceptive. We’d all be taking one pill a month.
I really can’t get over how an 18 year old, raised with all the information, is making that mistake.

It is not hard to avoid getting pregnant. She needs to really start growing up.

TeaKitten · 09/08/2023 18:38

She could be yes, she’s been really silly here, at 18 there’s no excuse for not atleast reading the information leaflet that comes with the tablet. Hopefully she will take this as motivation to go on the pill.

AndTheSurveySays · 09/08/2023 18:38

If the condom slipped off it sounds like it may not fit correctly. I'd suggest that she tells her boyfriend to do some research to find the best condom fit.

Sounds like the seconds UPSI was around ovulation and over a week since taking the MAP. So yes, high chance of pregnancy in terms of risk, though obviously not guaranteed.
I'd test as soon as period due and keep testing until it comes, so abortion can be organised quickly and early if needed.
I'm a little concerned she took the MAP without fully understanding how it works and really needs a better contraception than just condoms.

Sounds like a coil would be a good idea for her?

ArseMenagerie · 09/08/2023 18:43

They have been stupid not ‘she’.
she might be pregnant. When this crisis is over she needs to go on hormonal contraception and condoms.

As a pp has said the map delays ovulation and it sounds like she had unprotected sex the second time during her fertile week. There's definitely a possibility. Get uer to do a test and the one week later if her period hasn't shown up.

If she's having sex she should know how the reproductive cycle works. And so should he. Please educate her.

On the positive side it sounds like she has a good relationship with you and is open to talking things through. It's a great thing

Dacadactyl · 09/08/2023 18:47

She's not mature enough to be having sex. Particularly not if she's felt the need to go running to you about it all now

Bellyblueboy · 09/08/2023 18:48

There are two people having unprotected sex here. Why are so many just blaming the woman?

Ollifer · 09/08/2023 18:50

If the condom fell off they need to be using smaller ones.

And sorry to sound rude but I can't believe at 18 she thought the map covered you for the rest of the cycle. She needs to get educated on this stuff, it's not really rocket science it's basic information that's so important

Can we just fuck off with the mean comments? I hate the nasty comments about a teenager barely an adult. Adult women in their 30s do silly mistakes like this but of course on MN we love to get on our high and mighty horse.

Yes she could get pregnant and needs 2 methods of contraception to be safe in the future condom + and something else reliable.

Anytips22 · 09/08/2023 18:51

Has she had any unprotected sex in the last 120 hours? If so, she can get Levonelle again if that is the case or maybe able to get Ella one instead. She should contact a sexual health clinic for advice and discuss options for ongoing contraception. A pregnancy test should be taken 3 weeks after the last unprotected sex.

Potential hopefully not. They need to look at better contraception moving forward, hopefully this will scare them enough to take it more seriously. What’s done is done make a plan moving forward

x2boys · 09/08/2023 18:54

I.think people are being a bit harsh ,she's 18 we all make mistakes, I was very lucky not to have been faced with an unwanted pregnancy,
Hopefully she's not pregnant and they can get some reliable contraception sorted .

Brefugee · 09/08/2023 18:55

when i was 18 i, and all my fellow classmates, were so petrified of getting pregnant we were a) all on the pill and b) several of us also using condoms (herpes was the big STI then)

It is stupid in this day and age not to know how to access and use contraception. Some PP may think that's harsh - but what this couple needs are harsh words. No need to pussyfoot around, i'd be using the words idiotic and stop a lot if it was one of my DCs (either of them)
