What should I get from Booths

WhatToGetFromBooths · 07/08/2023 18:41

I've heard a lot on MN about Booths and I'm going to be in a town that has one next week. They're non existent here so I'm not familiar with them so I'd appreciate any suggestions of what is worth getting.

TIA

Everything.

And then go back in December and get their Xmas book.

IsisoftheWalbrook · 07/08/2023 18:45

Cotton shopping bags.
Passion fruit curd. Makes an amazing Eton mess
Raspberry vinegar.
Stem ginger biscuits.

Just take some time to wander around and find lovely things.

Forgoodnesssakewhatnow · 07/08/2023 18:46

An extended overdraft

isthewashingdryyet · 07/08/2023 18:46

Beer, Cumberland sausage in a traditional ring, from the meat counter, beer, loxley farm cream and sticky toffee pudding, beer, all the things

just enjoy the experience

youngestisapsycho · 07/08/2023 18:47

It’s bloody expensive in there!

cherryassam · 07/08/2023 18:56

They’ve got a proper deli counter still - so many runny yolk scotch eggs, also great pork pies, sausage rolls etc.

From the fresh bakery bit a custard tart, Eccles cake and treacle tart.

Bothams Yorkshire brack and stem ginger brack if you like fruit cake.

Brysons Viennese whirls. Williams Goosnargh biscuits.

Their tea blends are brilliant, and their coffee. The Afternoon Tea bags are a favourite here.

Bowland Brewery beer, although each store also usually has a super local beer section which is also always worth a browse.

English Lakes Ice Cream.

This.

The deli counter is outstanding - for everything but especially butter pies (or any pies!), hotpot, sausage rolls and Scotch eggs.

Also get Latham's cakes (their cream cakes are amazing but sell out quickly).

I love Booths own brand milk chocolate thins and their bags of almonds with rosemary. Their ice cream is also very good.

Yes, I concur this course of action would be wise.

Another vote for this. And an extended overdraft and, should we be playing that memory game where you have to add on a new thing each time, smoked Wensleydale.

RandomMess · 07/08/2023 19:13

The cheese counter in its entirety then check the wine & spirits 😬

Moredarkchocolateplease · 07/08/2023 19:14

Oooh we always pop in when we are in the North, we love Booths.

We like their own brand ground coffee. DH likes the various local beers they sell. We tend to pick up a couple of bottles of Booths own label wine to keep and have at Xmas as a treat.

Yes to the custard pies. The fruit and veg are superb and the packs of chicken breasts are great ( we are usually camping and these cook so well).

I have about 10 of the cotton shopping bags which I use ALL the time they are indestructible. I am going soon and hope they have some new slogans, they seemed to pause them after Covid.

BiscuitsandPuffin · 07/08/2023 19:16

Runny yolk scotch eggs sound amazing.
Just looked them up.
Only in the NW of England.
Maybe one day we'll be around those parts but even when we lived in the NE we almost never went to the NW.

Absolutely this!!

Could never afford to shop here regularly, but I love it!!

LookingForPurpose · 07/08/2023 19:19

I love their fresh dips in the chiller unit. Guacamole, salsa and hummus etc. they do them in stacks of 3, and they are 3 for £10 so I get the dips and then two others like cheese stuffed peppers and olives and feta. Some nice tortilla chips or crackers, bit of pate and I'm happy for 24 hours. Their butter pie is to die for too.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/08/2023 19:23

What's in the butter pie as well as butter? I'm imaging cutting it open and the butter running out.

Yes @Moredarkchocolateplease they have new slogans in since Covid. My most recent one (bought in June) is Beer today, scone tomorrow 😍

Sliced potato and onion - it’s a Lancashire thing, primarily Preston I believe (where Booths HO is)

Lancashire Butter Pie Recipe | Booths Supermarket

METHOD For the pastry, rub the butter into the flour and salt with your fingertips until the butter has broken down and evenly mixed through the flour.

That's such a Southern question. 😂

It's potato. Basically buttery, seasoned potato in a pie. Food of the Gods. Arguably Clayton Park make the best butter pies (which are the ones sold in Booths) but my family's own recipe is better 😜

(I started making butter pies during lockdown as I was homesick - live in London but originally from Lancs - and couldn't travel back to get my fix. London born and bred friends were horrified yet fascinated at the concept of carbs within carbs 😂).

Findyourneutralspace · 07/08/2023 19:28

The pick and mix olive bar is well worth a visit. Also check out the sausages and cheese counter.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 07/08/2023 19:29

@HundredMilesAnHour thats great news!!!!

What colour? My all time fave is 'Wuthering Bites'

You can get butter pie barms if you want to add another carb in.

They’re my go to when I’m on my period, pure comfort food.

WhatToGetFromBooths · 07/08/2023 19:30

Thanks all. I really appreciate the suggestions.

BarbaraofSeville I was just wondering what butter pie is too. I'm Scottish and not familiar with it at all so very glad that you asked.

Garstang White cheese.

Only place I've found it, firmer than a brie, more cheesy taste. Absolutely fantastic with their fresh bread and grapes.

It's a teal colour. Quite nice. And now they have double handles so a short handle as well as the usual long handles.

My all time favourite is The Pie Who Loved Me (probably quite appropriate given my post on butter pies earlier) closely followed by Preston Not Heston.
