What should I get from Booths

WhatToGetFromBooths · 07/08/2023 18:41

I've heard a lot on MN about Booths and I'm going to be in a town that has one next week. They're non existent here so I'm not familiar with them so I'd appreciate any suggestions of what is worth getting.

TIA

Our nearest supermarket is Booths and I haven't tried half this stuff. I must make a list. <wanders off to look for pen>

There is a Cranston's so I'll visit that too.

Are you going to Penrith? Booths and Cranstons are both lovely for treat food, for me the café in Booths is better. Breakfasts are lovely! Not just available in Booths but they have a good selection of Lancashire distilled Cuckoo gin - my favourite is the sunshine one. Have a great trip!

If the town is Penrith, you have Tebay services, Cranstons, Booths AND the Toffee Shop.

It's a wonder they're not all 30st plus there.

The Naan bread from the curry stall. If you cba making your own it's the next best thing.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/08/2023 22:25

They have a special hoover to clean around the pork pies on the deli counter. My sister lives round the corner from a branch. I love a mooch round!

Toddlerteaplease · 07/08/2023 22:27

I heard someone say that Booths makes Waitrose look like Lidl

Just to add that anyone passing through central Lancs on the M6 (junction 29), it's only a short drive to the Cuckoo distillery at Brindle which is open for tastings. 😛

The focaccia!! And more focaccia

Spend an hour browsing the condiments and make some lovely choices

Olives

And focaccia

Ooh the curry stand!

We had some amazing stuffed pasta with chilli and prawns in . Even the pasta sauce in the jar was far superior to anything they sell in Sainsbury’s. I noticed that things seemed to be made with better quality ingredients - so olive oil rather than rapeseed or palm oil etc .

TheCumbrian · 07/08/2023 22:35

I worked on a Booths cheese / deli counter for a few years.

Loved Christmas and helping people pick all the bits for nibbles and cheeseboards.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 07/08/2023 22:38

I obviously missed the butter pies when we visited !

Gillipips28 · 07/08/2023 22:42

All this talk of cheese and a Grand Day Out.....my (tenuous)claim to fame is when I worked on the deli counter of our local Booths, one of my colleagues was Nick Park's (Wallace and Gromit creator) grandma. The bad dog in one of the films was called Preston....! But yes, the cheese counters are amazing.

WhatToGetFromBooths · 07/08/2023 22:46

Yes, Penrith.

I love visiting the Lake District several times a year .. but the only walking I do is round Booths Grin.

Green cauliflower that is a fractal

HundredMilesAnHour · 07/08/2023 22:52

My (work) mentee who's based in Hong Kong visited the UK on holiday a few months ago, including a few days in the Lakes. I gave her instructions that she must visit Booths. I got a WhatsApp saying she was in the Booths cafe eating the best carrot cake she'd ever had in her life. 😋

Ooh and if you get a Booths card you can get a Cumberland sausage barm and a coffee for next to nothing!

You mean Romanesco broccoli. We love it and it’s so hard to find down south. It’s on every market in Yorkshire.

YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch · 07/08/2023 22:59

I have a Booths about a 10 minute walk from me, I like their white chocolate rocky road bites I think they are.

Definitely pick up a reusable fabric shopping bag, I've got the "The Cake District" one and it fits in so much.

And come back in winter for the Christmas book, it's a work of art.

An extended overdraft

This made me laugh! 😂

Boothsss · 07/08/2023 23:07

I am Booths! (had to add the extra s after a minor Mumsnet indiscretion caused an account removal!)
I pass by a Booths on the way home from work every day. Butter pies are my dirty secret😀

It’s just a good supermarket. Expect Waitrose of the North. Don’t go thinking oooo buy stuff special, it’s just a supermarket

56Chandeliers · 07/08/2023 23:18

It’s somewhere I go specifically to buy treats rather than do my shopping. For me, it’s the drinks section that I most prize, both alcoholic and soft. I always find something new and a bit different there. Last time we went, at least half of what we bought was soda water with weird and wonderful flavours, premixed cocktails that were a definite step up from the cans you get elsewhere (and I’m not turning my nose up at them) and really good cordial.

They used to do a fantastic Italian brand of pesto in the chiller section, but they stopped doing it years ago. Shame as it was the only thing that came close to the creamy pre-made pesto you can get In Italian supermarkets.

It’s more than that. It’s Waitrose on steroids. We holiday in the Dales a couple of times a year and heave early specifically to buy goodies in Booths in Ripon before hitting our holiday cottage. It’s like a pilgrimage.
