What should I get from Booths

WhatToGetFromBooths · 07/08/2023 18:41

I've heard a lot on MN about Booths and I'm going to be in a town that has one next week. They're non existent here so I'm not familiar with them so I'd appreciate any suggestions of what is worth getting.

TIA

Leave even! 😂

JulesJules · 07/08/2023 23:37

Booth's bags!

I've got The Cake District, Cumbria not Umbria and Much Ado about Mutton bags, but think I've still got room for All Cheeses Great and Small.

Mousehoel · 07/08/2023 23:53

I live near one and try to stay away as much as possible!
Biggest temptation is the cheese, specifically kaltbach and Délice de Bourgogne.

It's Wensleydale, but smoked. You can get it delivered from the Wensleydale creamery, but instead of paying a fiver to get a piece of cheese delivered, instead I drive nearly an hour to Ilkley, go for a walk on the moor, go and spend a fortune on fat rascals and fondant fancies in Betty's and then drop in Booths on the way back home and spend another small fortune on lovely cheese and other things. It's a Grand Day Out as another Wensleydale fan says.

That sounds like a perfect day out

I heard someone say that Booths makes Waitrose look like Lidl

They should use that in their marketing

evtheria · 08/08/2023 08:46

This is such a delicious and terrible thread to read 😩 I was moody for days after they shut the Booths at Media City, DH thought it was NO BIG DEAL (?!) but food has increasingly got so shit that buying a treat from there was worth the money.

They don’t need to. They’re not competitors.

evtheria · 08/08/2023 08:47

PS. OP, they sell lovely chilled pudding pots from France, think a Cadbury Dairy Milk pot but in a flavour like pistachio.

Humour bypass?

Oh, was that meant to be funny?

I refer you to my previous comment

I read it. Still not funny.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/08/2023 08:59

Lets not spoil a nice thread. Smile

Just out of interest, how much are the shopping bags in store?

There's people on eBay selling them for about £15 each including postage. One Christmas one went for £25 plus postage and it didn't even include the hallowed Christmas book.

christmaspudding43 · 08/08/2023 09:14

I stopped in at Gloucester services last year on my way down to see friends in Devon. There were lots of nice things but I also knew I was going to a farm shop once I got to Devon. Couldn't decide whether to buy then or not, and based on my experiences of Tebay, I went over to a staff member and with no further ado (I was very tired) and said which is your better side, north or south 😂🤦‍♀️. He looked at me for a while and then said oh south by a mile, we call the northbound the dark side. My heart! We then enjoyed a discussion about Tebay (northbound vastly superior) and I went off to buy all the bits I'd put back!

So there's my advice, do northbound Tebay as well as Booths.

Oh no @evtheria that's so sad!! Last time I drove back from London to the NW I was going to take a short cut to my Dad's via Manchester but I couldn't see Media City on the Booths website list anymore and it made me doubtful....now I understand why. Hence my decision to drive an extra 50 miles to my Dad's so I could go to Booths in Chorley (priorities 😜)

On the non- food side Booth’s paperback book selection is also utterly brilliant. They sell Astonish cleaning products; made in Lancashire, great value and they work better than any of the big brands. I’m looking at you Pink Stuff - and laughing at how rubbish you are in comparison. The new gift/flower section in my local branch is inspired. I bought a lily bouquet there 2 weeks ago and it’s only just fading. The cafe is ace. Their beer and wine selection is astonishingly good.
The fresh deli, veg,, meat ( including the hot sausage in a bun takeaway) and fish counters are all superb. Their strawberries are the best I’ve ever had from a shop.
There's no gimmicks with their loyalty card- flat rate off future shops and discounts on stuff you want to buy.
Their staff are the nicest, incredibly helpful and knowledgeable . It’s a pleasure to shop there.
I love Booths ❤️😂

Wow
who pissed on your ( presumably not Booths) chips this morning.

Anyway, as @BarbaraofSeville says, back to talk of delicious pies etc

WittynotPretty · 08/08/2023 09:42

@BarbaraofSeville Whaaat!? They’re only about 3 quid new.

Mousehoel sees new way to make £££s.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/08/2023 09:49

A question for those of you who have more experience of Booths than I have (I've only ever been in the Ilkley one).

Are all the shops the same size? The Ilkley branch is quite small for a supermarket, maybe like a large Co-op, or older Lidl/Aldi.

But if there are some larger branches with bigger ranges, I might be willing to travel further. After all, I can walk up a hill and wander round a posh market town anywhere across the north.

Indeed. Imagine how much a Christmas book and bag combo would go for?

WittynotPretty · 08/08/2023 09:55

@BarbaraofSeville @Mousehoel is a Booths’ bag the new F&M wicker hamper for insta likes? 🤣

HundredMilesAnHour · 08/08/2023 09:57

So there's my advice, do northbound Tebay as well as Booths.

I don't actually find a huge difference between northbound and southbound. Northbound slightly better for food (pertinent for this thread) whereas southbound slightly better for non-food (locally made soaps, body lotions, gifts, clothing etc). BUT....Tebay can be absolutely rammed because it's so well known for being good so best to go earlier in the day if possible before the hoards descend. We tend to be there at 8am on a Sat when it's quietish so you can sit outside with a (good!) coffee and enjoy the views. Only downside is that cheese purchases get very stinky as the day goes on and by the time we're driving home, the car smells like we've had a day trip to France 😂

BarbaraofSeville · 08/08/2023 09:50

I’d pay at least a fiver for the book alone!

I wonder how many I could walk out with without being stopped!

DahliaMacNamara · 08/08/2023 10:17

Oh, I want to move to the north west now. Tried most other regions in GB, so it must be time to sample Booths country.
I can confirm as a southerly dwelling punter that Gloucester South services outrank Gloucester North. I manage to call in several times a year, even if my only destination is Gloucester South.
