What should I get from Booths

WhatToGetFromBooths · 07/08/2023 18:41

I've heard a lot on MN about Booths and I'm going to be in a town that has one next week. They're non existent here so I'm not familiar with them so I'd appreciate any suggestions of what is worth getting.

TIA

A proper iced finger - not just icing on a finger bun - with fruit and mixed peel, from the fresh bakery section... bloody lovely Grin

IsisoftheWalbrook · 07/08/2023 20:29

Ok, I need to go back for more bags. I have the Pie Who Loved Me, The Cake District, and several others, but they are such fantastic quality.

There’s also the cafe, of course.

WhatToGetFromBooths · 07/08/2023 20:34

There is a Cranston's so I'll visit that too.

For those who have mentioned Garstang White cheese it is no longer available. Last time I visited Garstang I went to the cheese shop in the factory that made it (Dewlays) as I couldn’t find any in Booths- only to be told they are no longer making it :(
When I visit Booths I promise myself going to buy too much but always end up spending a fortune at the deli and cheese counter. I recommend the olives.

If you're coming down from Scotland and want the hat trick, you could also drop in either Cairn Lodge or Tebay Services.

You might be eating beans on toast until Christmas to make up for it, but it will be worth it.

Oh goodness yes, Tebay services 😍😍

Cheese - definitely cheese.
DS1 (17) works on the cheese/deli counter in Booths and gets a discount, however he is also a cheese eater and any purchases don't sit in the fridge for long.
My favourites are Snowdonia Red Storm and Black Bomber.

IsisoftheWalbrook · 07/08/2023 20:46

@BarbaraofSeville please tell me more about smoked Wensleydale.

IsisoftheWalbrook · 07/08/2023 20:48

@BarbaraofSeville oh, and I pass Gloucester services on my way up to the Lake District. I try to time a lunch stop there.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/08/2023 20:55

It's Wensleydale, but smoked. You can get it delivered from the Wensleydale creamery, but instead of paying a fiver to get a piece of cheese delivered, instead I drive nearly an hour to Ilkley, go for a walk on the moor, go and spend a fortune on fat rascals and fondant fancies in Betty's and then drop in Booths on the way back home and spend another small fortune on lovely cheese and other things. It's a Grand Day Out as another Wensleydale fan says.

This made me laugh so much. I am currently trying to persuade DDs that a 2 hour drive to Booths is worth it Grin

GEC44 · 07/08/2023 20:58

I wish Booths had shops in the south! Looking forward to visiting one when we are holidaying in the North soon.

BiscuitsandPuffin · 07/08/2023 19:16

Runny yolk scotch eggs sound amazing.
Just looked them up.
Only in the NW of England.
Maybe one day we'll be around those parts but even when we lived in the NE we almost never went to the NW.

@BiscuitsandPuffin they have one in Ilkley if you make it to Yorkshire!

Uppersop · 07/08/2023 20:59

If they have any Batchelors Creamed Mushrooms, can you get me a couple of tins, please? 🤣

AuntieMarys · 07/08/2023 21:00

Rafis spices
Alpine cheese
Nettle cheese
In fact all the bloody cheese

IsisoftheWalbrook · 07/08/2023 21:05

Thank you @BarbaraofSeville I shall look out for that.

That does, indeed, sound like a grand day out.

Their strawberries are always really good
Took these pics last time for a friend who hasn't been in one
It's one of those places you go for an ingredient you've never heard of, and if they don't have it...

Heritage tomatoes
Latham's cakes

Hoppinggreen · 07/08/2023 21:33

Is it wrong that Booths is the main reason I am trying to encourage DD to apply to Lancaster Uni?

My nearest is an hour away, I often plan a visit near Christmas. The cheese counter is amazing, Portuguese custard tart from the bakery. Cumberland sausage.
My dh loves the larger selection, each store is often different so showcases local smaller breweries.

The Portuguese custard tarts are identical to Lidl’s.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 07/08/2023 21:42

I agree that Latham’s cakes have gone bad, the last lemon cake I bought from Booths was really dry. Booths lemon cheesecake is good though. DH loves the various flavours of scotch egg and we both love the Moroccan hummus with fancy bread sticks. I had no idea butter pie was a Lancashire thing and that there weren’t different types of Lancashire cheese everywhere.

No, that's entirely reasonable. She needs to take one for the team. 😜

inkyfingers · 07/08/2023 21:56

Butter pie with chips was on offer to staff at Preston hospital; carbs within carbs with carbs on the side… Maybe not great for patients though 🫣

drspouse · 07/08/2023 21:59

Cheeeeese
Paté
Lovely bread

cakewitch · 07/08/2023 22:06

Me and my DSis do a fantasy Christmas food bigshop every year when the booths book comes out. It's the best fun ever. We will never be able to afford it in reality but we can dream about those cold lobster platters and the three bird roasts.
