What should I get from Booths

WhatToGetFromBooths · 07/08/2023 18:41

I've heard a lot on MN about Booths and I'm going to be in a town that has one next week. They're non existent here so I'm not familiar with them so I'd appreciate any suggestions of what is worth getting.

TIA

You can get butter pie barms if you want to add another carb in.

They’re my go to when I’m on my period, pure comfort food.

Can't get proper barmcakes darn sarf though. It's all baps and rolls. 😝

I may have lived in London too long as triple carbs is one carb too many for me these days 😂

Haha! I keep telling my kids id love to be rich enough to do my weekly shop at Booths.

Was in there this morning and bought Fiddler’s Lancashire Sea salt and malt vinegar crisps. Lovely.

i also saw a box of potatoes with a sign on stating they were harvested this morning and named the local farm.

SauvignonBlanche · 07/08/2023 19:35

Cuckoo gin and everything else already mentioned.

It's time to come home.

@HundredMilesAnHour thanks!!

Double handles. A woman designs those bags for sure. A woman who loves a robust product, versatile and can be doubled up as a tote bag for work 😁

That's such a Southern question. 😂

It's potato. Basically buttery, seasoned potato in a pie. Food of the Gods. Arguably Clayton Park make the best butter pies (which are the ones sold in Booths) but my family's own recipe is better 😜

(I started making butter pies during lockdown as I was homesick - live in London but originally from Lancs - and couldn't travel back to get my fix. London born and bred friends were horrified yet fascinated at the concept of carbs within carbs 😂).

Ey, I'll av yer knows that I'm no southerner, just from t'reit side of t'pennines.

It's all Yorkshire pudding starters with gravy and beef dripping fish and chips round here, we've no time for potato pies.

Although that does sound good, I bought a big bag of spuds today so I might have a go at making my own.

pizzaqueen32 · 07/08/2023 19:37

Their individual cheesecakes from the counter. Yum.

Also, if you're there in the morning crossiants from their bakery are gorgeous. It's 4 for £2.

Their shopping totes are lovely and their flowers are always gorgeous.

Love Booths, agree with pp regarding Christmas too. Wonderful. 🎄

Spanielsarepainless · 07/08/2023 19:38

Cheese.
Their Christmas catalogue is unbelievable.

HundredMilesAnHour · 07/08/2023 19:40

Ah yes, also buy Lancashire Crisps in Lancashire Sauce flavour and buy Lancashire Tea (better than Yorkshire Tea and much less ubiquitous).

I always stock up on the full selection of Lancashire cheese 'types' (i.e. maturities) so Creamy, Tasty and Crumbly. Crumbly is impossible to find outside the NW. (I once had an argument with the man beyond the counter in Neal's Yard Dairy as he couldn't tell me what sort of Lancs cheese they were selling and then I realised he didn't even know there are different types - just appalling!)

HundredMilesAnHour · 07/08/2023 19:43

Don't buy the Chorley cakes in Booths though - you need to go to a branch of Greenhalghs Bakery for the best Chorley cakes (and also best crumpets).

BarbaraofSeville · 07/08/2023 19:44

I was intrigued by the bags so googled and this page has an animation running through all the designs.

I now need them all <runs to Booths>

I wonder when the Christmas book comes out? I saw a post the other day complaining about another supermarket having Christmas stuff in so it could be soon.

We could all sit and circle the food we want for Christmas like DC do with the toy catalogues.

Latham’s cakes aren’t the same as they used to be, cost cutting after a takeover really affected the taste and quality.

Wallings ice cream.
sausages from the butcher counter.
Olives.
Local gins.

IggyAce · 07/08/2023 19:48

My nearest is an hour away, I often plan a visit near Christmas. The cheese counter is amazing, Portuguese custard tart from the bakery. Cumberland sausage.
My dh loves the larger selection, each store is often different so showcases local smaller breweries.

Neverknowinglysensible · 07/08/2023 19:51

I love Booths, we make a pilgrimage every so often to our nearest one an hour and a half away from where we live. Like so many have said, get the butter pie and a pouch of Truefoods beef gravy to pour over it. The hot gammon bap, served with mustard and mayonnaise, from the hot counter is to die for, they give you so much meat!
Own brand wines are always excellent, as is the meat, and it seems to be the one place in autumn where I can reliably get quinces and cobnuts.
I also highly recommend the Booths Christmas book although be wary of over ordering as everything looks so good!

IsisoftheWalbrook · 07/08/2023 18:41

Everything.

And then go back in December and get their Xmas book.

This!

ChaToilLeam · 07/08/2023 19:55

I have never been anywhere near a Booths but I am just reading this thread with quiet, drooling envy. Pleas continue! 😋

Cyclingforcake · 07/08/2023 20:01

Good local beers and a spice counter in the one near me. Also the best ‘whoops’ shelf around - discounted meat and fish by about 50% at the end of the day.
(Whoops it fell into my basket)

We have to remind ourselves we’re bobbing in for a few bits and not doing our weekly shop there.

Cyclingforcake · 07/08/2023 20:02

Fab breakfast with Santa in December too!

cptartapp · 07/08/2023 20:06

We're ten minutes from a Booths. It's often our Friday night treat to potter round and buy posh snacks.

KohlaParasaurus · 07/08/2023 20:10

Another shout for the cheese and deli counters and fresh baked goods. Also have a good browse at the booze aisles for interesting local beers and spirits. And if you're not too far from cooking facilities, fill your trolley from the fresh vegetable section.

KohlaParasaurus · 07/08/2023 20:11

And if you've got any money left after that, check whether there's a Cranstons nearby.

Marmalade71 · 07/08/2023 20:15

5 eggs.

Just cos you can Smile

cruffinsmuffin · 07/08/2023 20:16

😂 I have enjoyed every suggestion on this thread!

It's my local supermarket - I have to 100% agree with the Christmas book comment, the Christmas food is hands down the best supermarket Christmas food.

The cheese counter - Garstang white, any of the snowdonia cheese company mini truckles and anything that takes your pickle.

The alcohol section is normally fab, so if you're into that there's something for everyone! So many local gins.

The deli counter is a dangerous place, as PP said the scotch eggs are a must have (as is the egg pork pie!).

They do lots of the Latham's cakes, delicious and worth the indulgence. Enjoy!!
