How is everyone else surviving in this day and age!?

I’m just so mind blown how other people are living -

I see so many people with mortgages, going on holidays, having nice cars etc etc and there jobs are obviously not that well paid! My partner works really hard and brings home £5000 a month. It doesn’t work out beneficial for me to go back to work as I have a one year old and the childcare is about the same as I would earn - now we are scrimping and saving, struggling to save each month, getting absolutely rinsed paying rent (in not even an expensive place!) and we can’t afford a mortgage, and really doesn’t look like we ever would be able to. It’s very depressing and I’m feeling so sorry for my partner who is working hard. I’m considering getting an evening and a weekend job but that would mean I would never see my partner as he’s back so late, and to be honest it wouldnt even make too much of a difference to us. I just feel like why is this fair? When he’s in a well paid job he’s worked years in that we’re in this position when other people seem to be living it up!? Ahhh just having a stress tonight!

THESE ARE BULLSHIT FIGURES PEOPLE!

It's only taken 11 pages but I think you could be onto something there 😂

Capybara75 · 05/08/2023 12:27

Not total bullshit: we are in the SE - mortgage plus bills (council tax, utilities, insurance) is nearly three grand per month. But the commuting costs do sound unreasonably high.

User1755387908 · 05/08/2023 12:30

The commuting costs have probably been 'enhanced' for effect but now make the whole post seem ridiculous

Chewbecca · 05/08/2023 12:56

I live in commuter zone (about 45mins train) and the fare is about £350pm if you go every day (which hardly anyone does now). And if you do, your petrol costs are usually very low.
If OP lives much further out (so explaining the higher fares), I would expect really low rent. If they live in a high rent area, fares would usually be v low.

The main takeaway for OP should be to have a review of expenditure because with a bit of money management they should be able to start saving, get a mortgage and afford an occasional holiday. 🎉

Has OP not returned since starting this thread?

I am also bemused how her DH is having to pay £700 train fares to work AND £300 petrol at work!!! Every single month!!!!

Not that I can see! Not since posting a breakdown of their supposed costs.

🤔 at the petrol and train travel costs.

If you’re familiar with the OP’s many past posts on here about her boyfriend and his hobbies, that mystery will be solved.

You never really know what other people's situations are and it's so easy to assume things.

I do a really menial job, working for myself at home. I know that most people think that I do it for pocket money, because my DH has a good job. But the reality is, that I earn double what he does.

In the summer, we can net £7500pm between us, in the winter it's about £5000pm.

Our mortgage and bills are approx £1300 per month. We send £444 extra to the mortgage though, so in reality we spend £1744.

Then we buy food (not entirely sure what we spend there - maybe £500pm).

DH has commuting costs (again, not sure exactly what that comes to - maybe £100pm).

I have no commuting costs, because I wfh. A tank of diesel costs me around £60 and lasts me for about 10 weeks (little trips to supermarket).

No childcare fees, as the children are grown up.

I think people look at what I do, and wonder how we afford holidays. Or assume we put them on credit cards. We don't.

I did have an inheritance when a parent passed away, and I had a redundancy package when I left a job that I had been in for 27 years. Both of these lump sums were primarily sent to the mortgage to get it right down.

Only 15 years ago, my situation was dire. I had a huge mortgage, more credit cards than I should have been allowed (5 at once, iirc) and my income was just £1200pm. I also had children at home. I was struggling big time.

I can’t believe you’re still with him @Mummyrere

UnaVaca · 05/08/2023 14:55

You should go back to work. It’s very short sighted not to.

Beenhereageskeepchangingname · 08/08/2023 17:41

Op where are you?

perhaps still on the train 🚂
