What's the worst musical you have ever been to?

I love musicals, and DS2 who has autism is obsessed so we go to as many as we can. We've seen Cats (not the film!) 7 times, JCSS 7 times, Blood Brothers, Les Mis, Evita, Chicago , Cabaret..and many others. (JCSS is my personal favourite)

Today we went to We Will Rock You.
OMG.
It was cringingly awful. Even if you love Queen, it was still so bad. Worst 'plot' and dialogue ever, the choreography was...interesting and it was played for cheap laughs and smutty out dated jokes, headed by Ben Elton who cannot..and should not..sing.
Never again!!!

Wicked - I had no idea what was going on for a good part of it.

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory- so disappointed with this. Boring and poor staging.

So glad to hear Matilda is good - we're going next week on our London trip and I talked DS9 out of Hamilton as I thought it would be dull (also confirmed by a PP). Though DS is obsessed with all things presidential - caught him watching Ronald Reagan's funeral the other day 🙈

Hamilton is the opposite of dull. Sorry

Guys and Decking Dolls. I fell asleep and decided to leave my husband.

The Lion King, saw the West End production around 2005 and it was so pants. But then everyone else raved about it so maybe just me!

I've seen Billy Elliot twice and absolutely loved it both times.

Me and my husband recently saw an amateur production of Green Day's American Idiot the musical which was amazing.

Hairyfairy01 · 03/08/2023 22:31

Wicked. Just didn't get it. Loved Matilda and the body guard. Due to see Six soon - have heard good things prior to this thread!

CinnamonJellyBeans · 03/08/2023 22:32

Miss Saigon. I didn't know the storyline. Husband and I were horrified at the opening number.

What a cool kid! Hamilton is good (I have seen a ton of musicals) and if you son likes the history it is stacked with facts. It's on Disney+ but it is much better live.

Matilda is good too and I'm sure you'll both love it. Also the theatre is well positioned for other nice things to do/eat.

Medusaismyhero · 03/08/2023 22:32

@XelaM for a 9 year old boy though? I genuinely thought Matilda would be a better choice for him.

Enoughnowbrandon · 03/08/2023 22:32

I've been to London twice in my life to see musicals, can't travel much. Is there any way I can watch any of these online?

ApolloandDaphne · 03/08/2023 22:33

Hated Bat out of Hell.
Found 42nd Street boring. The tap dancing was good but the story was terrible.
I've loved everything else I've seen. We are seeing Cabaret in November and I can't wait!

Gymmum82 · 03/08/2023 22:33

I’ve never seen a musical I’ve not loved. Love cats, the bodyguard, Matilda, Les mis.

The only one I didn’t like was Hamilton but I’ve only watched it on the tv not on the stage. I was a bit bored. But might be better in the theatre.

i really want to see six. Heard good things

Six. Absolutely dreadful excuse for a musical. If there had been an interval I would have left.

Same! Absolutely awful.

usernotfound0000 · 03/08/2023 22:33

Dirty dancing. And I love the film but it doesn't translate to stage well. Not helped by the audience singing and cheering like they are on a hen night either.

Medusaismyhero · 03/08/2023 22:34

@Thally thank you - he's a character that's for sure! Maybe next year for Hamilton - thanks for the Disney+ tip too. I'll get him to watch it (maybe after London though 🙈)

peachgreen · 03/08/2023 22:34

& Juliet. It’s the only musical I’ve ever left at the interval. To be fair I don’t really like jukebox musicals full stop so I should have expected it but ooft, it was bad.

Waitress is one of my absolute favourites. Tied with Company, and only topped by Operation Mincemeat.

Wicked. I hated it. Absolute drivel. Everyone else seems to love it....

I don’t get it either, or understand why others love it so much..

Els1e · 03/08/2023 22:35

Thought Blood Brothers ok not great. Loved Six though.

peachgreen · 03/08/2023 22:35

Oh and the recent Cabaret was incredible but mostly because of Amy Lennox – I can’t imagine seeing it without her now.

Newtrix · 03/08/2023 22:35

Greatest Days! The most miserable musical I've ever seen, cried and we left feeling depressed. Only musical I've ever considered walking out of and I've seen more than I can remember.

Depends which ones but yes, you can watch some- you'll sometimes have to pay separately for them. Do you not have a theatre more local to you? Most big productions tour frequently.

sweatervest · 03/08/2023 22:35

I didn't get book of Mormon. I thought it was meant to be funny but I'm obviously lacking something in the brain department

Ah no, I also disliked Rent and my seats were good

I saw Rent almost twenty year's ago and absolutely loved it. I still listen to it now.

l really disliked Blood brothers. I thought I was never getting out of the theater.

I saw Operation Mincemeat recently, really didn't know what to expect but up there with my favourites of all time.

UndercoverCop · 03/08/2023 22:37

Cats and frozen (the latter a family member bought us tickets as a gift) I wanted to pinch the singing children. Cats was just odd and dull.
I've seen phantom twice both in the West end one much better than the other so I think it depends who the performers are.
Loved Les mis it was the first grown up musical I'd seen and I was about 12/13 I was awestruck.
This is an unpopular opinion but I actually enjoyed love never dies.
I also liked Sweeney Todd , saw it at the adelphi 2012 ish with Imelda Staunton and Michael Ball.
