What's the worst musical you have ever been to?

I love musicals, and DS2 who has autism is obsessed so we go to as many as we can. We've seen Cats (not the film!) 7 times, JCSS 7 times, Blood Brothers, Les Mis, Evita, Chicago , Cabaret..and many others. (JCSS is my personal favourite)

Today we went to We Will Rock You.
OMG.
It was cringingly awful. Even if you love Queen, it was still so bad. Worst 'plot' and dialogue ever, the choreography was...interesting and it was played for cheap laughs and smutty out dated jokes, headed by Ben Elton who cannot..and should not..sing.
Never again!!!

The "dark" current Oklahoma production seems, AFAICS, to be focussing on all the reasons why I've always hated Oklahoma. I get that this is more artistically complete than a conventional production which pretends it's a jolly singalong and blithely ignores the grim aspects, but I don't want to see it either way.

I went to Oklahoma about a week after it transferred and admit I hadn’t read any reviews.

Fair to say it was NOT what I was expecting to see.

Glad to see a lot of people agree with me about Wicked. I went to see it with my DD on a Saturday night when Strictly was on (recorded it, but it meant of course I couldnt vote). To be fair, I hadnt realised that the musical was meant to be a prequel, but the first act seemed to be such waffle with tuneless songs I was furious at missing my favourite programme, and snapped crossly at DD "To think I missed Strictly for this!"

All three in one weekend 😬

just the thought of this brings tears to me eyes

HRT Queen don't you like them ?? We LOVE them . We did the 3 together as it was half price kids' week but it didn't seem to matter if you didn't bring a kid !!!

We come over from Dublin and this year so far have seen the 3 above , Lion King, Les Mis,Matilda and Phantom all for the second time and also We Will Rock you .
We attend in Dublin also but nothing compares to your beautiful theatres !! I think I have a musical addiction .....

Feeling grateful that I’ve not experienced a bad one yet! However, I’ve got Dirty Dancing coming up soon and I keep seeing negative comments about it!!

We've got booked in for 3 in 3 nights in October:
Hamilton (seen it lots before and I love it - it's my comfort show)
Six
Phantom as an accidental "oh fuck it go on, add to cart" because it's one that me and DH just think we really do want to get to see some day so should take the change to do it now.

Would love to see Hadestown when it comes back to London, already working on DH for that one. I'd love to see a production of In The Heights as well (OK I'm an unashamed LMM fangirl). We're annoyingly in a bit of a theatrical dead patch in terms of not getting decent touring productions anywhere locally so have to either farm the kids off to grandparents so we can go to London, or travel to see things touring about as much distance as it would be to get to London anyway. Can't really take the kids yet as DD1 is incapable of shutting up for the duration of one song, let alone a whole musical - and the opening bars of Hamilton are enough to make her flee the room screaming in case her parents start trying to rap along (this comes in handy)

CATS and Starlight Express - terrible. 3 hours of my life I'll never get back.
On the other hand, I saw Cabaret last week - absolutely fabulous. Can't rate it highly enough!

@Lordofmyflies Did you see Cabaret at the Kit Kat club? Thinking about booking, it looks fab as Jake Shears and Self-Esteem are now starring. Did you do the dinner etc beforehand? Anyone else been?

Lordofmyflies · 28/08/2023 16:43

@JellyBeanFactory , Yes, I saw Cabaret at the playhouse theatre or Kitkat club as it now is. Mason Alexander Park is Emcee and utterly fabulous and haunting. The best theatre Ive seen in years. I booked a table 2 rows back from the stage. We had drinks and nibbles at the table so can't comment on food. With a table seat, you have a slightly earlier entry time to enjoy the pre-show compared to dress and upper circle. There is a chance though you are 'interacted' with by the pre-show cast so be warned! If you can - book the table seats as you are only feet away from the cast. I think most seats would have a good view though as the stage revolves.

@Glockamorra

I expected that.

I didn't expect it to be racist and portray hideous racial stereotypes in the extreme - did you?

I can completely understand why you would feel this way. I wasn’t offended but I was surprised that BOM managed to re-open after covid. They had to do some re-writes but only toned it down a tiny bit. The black villagers now text on a mobile phone not a type writer and a couple of other very basic changes. I think the only reason it hasn’t been forced to close is because it employs so many black actors on Broadway and in the Westend, but especially on Broadway where things are more sensitive.

I wasn’t offended but the parts with the villagers were my least favourite parts of the show. I love all the Mormon stuff. Turn it off, spooky mornon hell dream, man up, two two by, Hello, the ending of the show etc. I find the African bits stupid and annoying.

DaisyDreaming · 03/09/2023 08:39

For those saying Starlight Express. There’s many rumours swirling that it’s going to return to the Westend!

HappySonHappyMum · 03/09/2023 08:47

@DaisyDreaming REALLY wanted to see this when I was a teenager! All the actors on roller-skates around the auditorium seemed really exciting when I was younger. Fingers crossed I might finally get to go.

rookiemere · 03/09/2023 08:53

@JellyBeanFactory I was lucky enough to get a seat for opening night of Cabaret with Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley. I thought it was amazing. I was in a - relatively- cheap seat and still got a great view, so it's really up to you if you want to splash out.

I have seen Jake Shears as a supporting act to Duran Duran and at the Lytham festival this year. He has a lot of energy and I think he would be an excellent Emcee.

LollipopViolet · 03/09/2023 10:13

See I loved Six but knew what I was getting into - saw it on tour at our local theatre. Would love to see it on the West End.

I'm not a musical person really - much prefer comedy or a play, and have sensory issues that make a lot of things inaccessible, alongside a visual impairment. But, @EvenlyDetermined I LOVED the new Wizard of Oz when I went to see it with friends.

I'm hoping to be in London in October and am very tempted by Witness to the Prosecution as a friend saw it and raved about it at work, if anyone has any thoughts.

Davros · 12/09/2023 18:14

I've just seen that there's a musical of Rebecca coming (shudder)

@LollipopViolet I’ve seen it twice; if you like Agatha Christie, it’s a good stage adaptation and the “courtroom” setting sets it off very well. My DH can be a bit sniffy about theatre productions, but even he said it was very well
done and enjoyed it. There are often special offers going on this; probably worth a look?

newnamethanks · 12/09/2023 19:44

@Davros oh surely not? Poor Daphne duM, she must be spinning.

XelaM · 12/09/2023 20:34

Ok, I can with absolute certainty tell you that the worst musical currently on the West End is GREASE.

It's actually shocking how bad it is. I have been to MUCH better high school productions of Grease. It was absolutely shocking from beginning to end. AND IT DID NOT EVEN MENTION THE CAR RACE (and Sandy was dark-haired and awful)

Amniceandgenuine · 10/08/2023 00:45

Just home from Les Mis …absolutely fantastic, music incredible!

Haven't seen many musicals, but recently went to see Les Mis with my teenage DD who is autistic. She sat quite impassively throughout the whole thing, then at the end announced, quite flatly and matter-of-factly: "That was the best thing I have ever seen in my life"

😃

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 12/09/2023 22:11

9-5 The Musical SOOOO bad it was funny 😆🙈

StuckintheUSA · 24/12/2023 03:04

Cats. The worst ever. Then Phantom of the Opera.

I saw Hamilton this summer, and that was pretty bad. We left during the interval (free tickets!). But I'm not really a fan of musicals, so that's probably the reason. Although I did see a great performance of Chicago in the West End, and Jesus Christ Superstar was also good. I like the music for Evita too, although I've never seen it performed. And my parents took me to see Oliver when I was young, which was also good. I think it helps when you know the songs.

theveryhungrybum · 24/12/2023 12:57

Couldn't stand The Lion King.
Absolutely adore Wicked, loved We Will Rock You and Book of Mormon (have seen three multiple times).
