What's the worst musical you have ever been to?

I love musicals, and DS2 who has autism is obsessed so we go to as many as we can. We've seen Cats (not the film!) 7 times, JCSS 7 times, Blood Brothers, Les Mis, Evita, Chicago , Cabaret..and many others. (JCSS is my personal favourite)

Today we went to We Will Rock You.
OMG.
It was cringingly awful. Even if you love Queen, it was still so bad. Worst 'plot' and dialogue ever, the choreography was...interesting and it was played for cheap laughs and smutty out dated jokes, headed by Ben Elton who cannot..and should not..sing.
Never again!!!

We Will Rock You was dire. Starlight Express also. Really enjoyed School of Rock.

IchhabekeineAhnung · 10/08/2023 09:57

Tony! by Harry Hill was also brilliant 👏

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 10/08/2023 10:19

Blood Brothers. I hate musicals at the best of times but agreed to go with a friend.

It was depressing, wooden and every song seemed to be about someone wanting to be like Marilyn Monroe.

We loved Tina Turner. And The Yeoman of the Guard by the Gilbert and Sullivan society last night in Buxton was absolutely stupendous...We like quite a range of musicals!

All I can hear in my head now is Marilyn Monroe sung in the style of a bad am dram performer (because blood brothers is like both a poorly written and poorly performed am dram/GCSE drama piece!)

WeetabixTowels · 10/08/2023 10:23

I love Blood Brothers and have seen it maybe 6 times. But the last time I went to see it with my friend I thought the narrator was particularly judgmental and sanctimonious, my friend agreed and we have to stifle giggles every time he came in to berate a character who supposedly couldn’t hear him. so now me and my friend have an in-joke where we sing to each other as sanctimonious narrates in the tune of “Devil’s got your number” - for example “Don’t you know herbal tea tastes like piss, you’re not suited to the bougie life, just have a cup of Yooooorkahrie” 😂

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 10/08/2023 10:32

I totally agree, it's a GCSE drama piece at best.

Lots of shouting, bad songs and implausible scenarios.

Meltinthemiddle · 10/08/2023 10:34

Cats and Bat out of Hell awful.
Pretty women was rubbish but I loved the film.
I absolutely loved Lion king, phantom and Miss Saigon.

sludgefactory · 10/08/2023 11:15

Dirty Dancing - just dreadful. The acting, the accents, the fact that it had replicated the film but everything was just a bit worse. I cringed the whole way through it and couldn't wait for the end.

Agreed. I've mentioned it twice already! Blush

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 10/08/2023 21:25

We Will Rock You was pretty average given the music material.

For the person hating on The Book Of Mormon- did you have any idea before watching it how it was going to be? It’s one of my favourites, probably after growing up in a religion with similar expectations you see just how misguided and brainwashed the God squad are. The offensive content is brilliantly executed, I had tears from laughing so hard all the way through.

GoddessofWar · 10/08/2023 21:27

I was really “meh” about seeing phantom but loved it so much I’ve seen it 3 times now! I wasn’t mad on wicked.

unicornhair · 27/08/2023 14:02

I’ve just come back to this to add Wicked. What a load of tripe, I can’t believe people see it multiple times.

FoodieToo · 27/08/2023 19:07

We saw Wicked, Oklahoma and Wizard of Oz this weekend !

I was not that impressed with Wicked, not sure why. I likes Oklahoma ( reviews dire and it's a tad strange !!) and I LOVED The Wizard of Oz .

TribeD · 27/08/2023 19:14

Miss Saigon... I was bored rigid.

One of the friends I went with said it was a total crock of shit, the other one said we were cold and unfeeling. Perhaps we were!

Where's the edit button ??

Saverage did you read the reviews of Oklahoma ?

MrsDBaddiel · 27/08/2023 20:50

Cats and Bat Out of Hell, left both at the interval.

Lordofmyflies · 27/08/2023 20:54

CATS and Starlight Express - terrible. 3 hours of my life I'll never get back.
On the other hand, I saw Cabaret last week - absolutely fabulous. Can't rate it highly enough!

Yes I read some of them. I agree some bits weren't great (the dance bit) but loved how they did a whole dark take on Oklahoma without changing any of the dialogue or songs.

Wicked. I hated it. Absolute drivel. Everyone else seems to love it....

I don't. It's awful. Love Les Mis and Phantom with a passion.

shakeitoffsis · 27/08/2023 21:13

Cats. Fucking dreadful

All three in one weekend 😬

just the thought of this brings tears to me eyes

The "dark" current Oklahoma production seems, AFAICS, to be focussing on all the reasons why I've always hated Oklahoma. I get that this is more artistically complete than a conventional production which pretends it's a jolly singalong and blithely ignores the grim aspects, but I don't want to see it either way.
