What's the worst musical you have ever been to?

I love musicals, and DS2 who has autism is obsessed so we go to as many as we can. We've seen Cats (not the film!) 7 times, JCSS 7 times, Blood Brothers, Les Mis, Evita, Chicago , Cabaret..and many others. (JCSS is my personal favourite)

Today we went to We Will Rock You.
OMG.
It was cringingly awful. Even if you love Queen, it was still so bad. Worst 'plot' and dialogue ever, the choreography was...interesting and it was played for cheap laughs and smutty out dated jokes, headed by Ben Elton who cannot..and should not..sing.
Never again!!!

Cats - like other poster we left at the interval.

Phantom - for the love of God did they have to sing the talking bits - just dire.

I know its widely loved, but I didn't like Matilda on Broadway. Largely down to both Matilda and Miss Honey have odd very false sounding British / American / Irish hybrid accents.

Yep this is my vote too. I was so looking forward to it.

We Will Rock You is like an Am Dram version of Queen The Panto. It has all the right music and a great writer but it's bloody awful.

Omg why?!? How can you hate Les Mis?

I absolutely loved Les Mis am going again next Wednesday for the fourth time !

QueSyrahSyrah · 03/08/2023 22:22

Oh God and Cats of course. Dire. Drivel.

LegendsBeyond · 03/08/2023 22:22

Viva Forever & an awful Dirty Dancing a few years back in the West End.

NancyJoan · 03/08/2023 22:23

Heathers. Terrible, just terrible.

TheMildManneredMilitant · 03/08/2023 22:24

Lord of the Rings. Absolute shite.

Tiredalwaystired · 03/08/2023 22:24

Chess.

I only saw it as a friend was in it. I’m not surprised that a musical about a board game failed to set me alight.

Batalax · 03/08/2023 22:24

We really enjoyed we will rock you several years ago.

I hated Chicago.

Book of Mormon, we thought it was appalling, so offensive

I am a former Mormon and loved it.

paint never dries sorry love never dies. Dull, no memorial songs and requires you to believe every character has had personality transplants since phantom

I actually really enjoyed the music in Love Never Dies but it is hard to believe it was written by someone who had understood phantom, let alone written it. I mean the whole point of phantom is how far he will go to get Christine. The whole concept was like the worst fan fiction ever conceived.

another one who doesn’t get the Hamilton hype - but then it’s not not kind of music

ScarlettSunset · 03/08/2023 22:25

I hated Wicked.
Everyone else seems to rave about it so maybe I just went to a bad performance

WimpoleHat · 03/08/2023 22:25

jenbj · 03/08/2023 21:53

Wicked. I hated it. Absolute drivel. Everyone else seems to love it....

I’m with you, @jenbj . Three hours of my life I won’t get back there…..

Tiredalwaystired · 03/08/2023 22:25

Oooh I forgot about The Woman in White. When Lloyd Webber thought he’d have a go at a set using tech. The set was OK. The show was appalling.

happystory · 03/08/2023 22:25

Wicked, omg all the green.....

Sarab85 · 03/08/2023 22:26

Chicago for me. One of my fav musical films but was massively underwhelming in the west end!

crazeekat · 03/08/2023 22:26

we will rock u in Aberdeen. walked out half way.
Wicked, London, walked out before half way.

sooooooo disappointed in them both, never been back to the theatre since. there was a post recently about theatre etiquette and both these shows there was zilch. people were as annoying as the show to be fair.
think theatre is just not for me now. oh well.

Six waste of time and money
Have seen Matilda three times though

So glad to hear Matilda is good - we're going next week on our London trip and I talked DS9 out of Hamilton as I thought it would be dull (also confirmed by a PP). Though DS is obsessed with all things presidential - caught him watching Ronald Reagan's funeral the other day 🙈

Oh good, I thought it was just me! Really naff.

1ittlegreen · 03/08/2023 22:27

Half a Sixpence was awful, so drab and mockney. Daddy Cool was awesome. But can't beat JCSS....

Boodahh · 03/08/2023 22:28

We will Rock You was the only one I didn't like, and I do like most musicals. Shame as it was a present as I remember.

The Best - The Lion King, School of Rock v good too

Vitriolinsanity · 03/08/2023 22:28

I will get flamed, but I thought Les Mis was a total yawnfest.

I have concluded I don't like musicals where the script is sung. Prefer a burst of song between acting.
