What's the worst musical you have ever been to?

I love musicals, and DS2 who has autism is obsessed so we go to as many as we can. We've seen Cats (not the film!) 7 times, JCSS 7 times, Blood Brothers, Les Mis, Evita, Chicago , Cabaret..and many others. (JCSS is my personal favourite)

Today we went to We Will Rock You.
OMG.
It was cringingly awful. Even if you love Queen, it was still so bad. Worst 'plot' and dialogue ever, the choreography was...interesting and it was played for cheap laughs and smutty out dated jokes, headed by Ben Elton who cannot..and should not..sing.
Never again!!!

@Enoughnowbrandon Hamilton is on Disney+ as is another stage musical I can’t remember the name off.
Come from Away was on Amazon prime, if it’s still in their it’s worth a watch.
Tick Tick Boom is a film in Netflix about someone writing a musical - it’s a great film.

Cats - what a load of garbage. I’ve seen lots and did stage lighting for school and amateur productions so seen a lot of rubbish, but Cats is the worst of the lot! Just what is the point of it?

Dukekaboom · 03/08/2023 22:38

Lion King. Just awful and sooo dull. First ten minutes were great but that’s it. Think I fell asleep in the second half 😴

Oh god I feel so seen. 😂I went to see this with 15 (!) other people and they all bloody loved it. I hated it. SO BORING. Where was the storyline? And all the “clever” innuendo. 🙄 I normally love musicals as well, had such high hopes.

Misty84 · 03/08/2023 22:38

Wicked, The Lion king, Phantom, Cats 😴

Loved Matilda!

peachgreen · 03/08/2023 22:39

@usernotfound0000 It’s magic, isn’t it? I saw it back at the Southwark Playhouse and have seen it a couple of times in every venue since, and it’s just got better and better.

sazzy5 · 03/08/2023 22:39

I hated Wicked, I was so disappointed. Our house, Madness songs, went for my DH but I didn’t enjoy it.
Loved Les Mis, the voices were amazing. Book of Mormon was hilarious, I did see people walk out but surely you know what it is about?!

This was in relation to someone’s Six post. I’m bad at this. 😂

ellenpartridge · 03/08/2023 22:40

Cats, so bad

OsirisservesAnubis · 03/08/2023 22:40

I didn't enjoy Grease. I absolutely love the film, and I know it was a stage production first, but I just think the film works much better.

I thought back to the future the musical was really good.

SilkenPilken · 03/08/2023 22:40

It often depends which version you see. Saw Chicago in the West End about 10 years ago. It was really lacklustre, the costumes were visibly tatty and it closed soon after. You need to see a show when it’s fresh and the performers are on top of their game.

TightPants · 03/08/2023 22:41

I saw a production of Grease in the West End last year and it was dreadful! Half the story had been cut out and it didn’t make sense at all.

Ive decided I’m not a fan of musicals.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 03/08/2023 22:41

Love most mentioned on here! Saw wwry on its original run 4 times 😂

Mine is Shrek. Each time I think about it I am genuinely astound that someone thought it was stage worthy. Fucking hideous.

Bad Cinderella a v close second

tachetastic · 03/08/2023 22:41

Oh my God, I am really strict that I never leave the theatre, lack of respect for the actors etc etc etc.

However, Lord of the Rings: the Musical could have been the worst three and a half hours of my life, but instead DH and I could not bear to return to our seats after the first interval.

Absolutely awful. I just hope the lights in the theatre were too bright for the cast to notice because given the crowd leaving the theatre with us we were not the only ones.......

Enoughnowbrandon · 03/08/2023 22:41

I live in West Wales. We do have a theatre, which puts on one musical a year.

mildlydispeptic · 03/08/2023 22:42

I never saw it, but I gather Desperately Seeking Susan was a turkey of note.

sugarapplelane · 03/08/2023 22:42

I really didn’t enjoy Wicked. Couldn’t see what all the fuss was about. What a waste of money
Also didn’t think much of Phantom

But I would definitely see Cabaret, Matilda and Miss Saigon over and over again

That's a pantomime, not a musical!

Just kidding! 😁

Sorry, that was @OsirisservesAnubis
@mewkins thanks, I will do.

Foxymoxy68 · 03/08/2023 22:46

We Will Rock You-expected to love it but it was utter dross!
Come From Away is my new favourite. Touring next year-would highly recommend.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 03/08/2023 22:46

Cats. It was dreadful.

partystress · 03/08/2023 22:46

Pleased to see one vote for Heathers already. Really sick suicide and mass killer storyline and a creepily cultish audience who whooped alarmingly throughout.

But surprised to see Waitress mentioned. Absolutely loved it and can’t hear the main song without crying.

The Sound of Music

Awful. If I could have left part way then I would have. I didn't like Starlight Express much either.

I much prefer opera to musicals.

ParadiseNotFound · 03/08/2023 22:50

I have seen and enjoyed most of the shows listed. Some of my favourite shows are listed! But a poor production can taint even a good musical. And a good production can make a mediocre musical incredible ("Carrie" at the Southwark Playhouse was phenomenal).

Worst for me by a country mile was Paradise Found'. A misnomer if ever there was one. This was the tale of a Persian Shah going to Vienna, with songs set to Strauss music, a star studded cast and a creative team full of Tony award winners, and produced at the very highly thought of Mernier Chocolate Factory. Sounds lovely you think? Classy? You have no idea of the horror that is to befall you. Putting it very politely: the Wiener Blut waltz has been tainted forever as a song entitled 'Feeling yours, feeling mine'. Which was indeed about what it sounds like it was about.

The West End Whingers review can be read here: westendwhingers.wordpress.com/2010/05/25/review-paradise-found-menier-chocolate-factory/
They had to come up with a whole special new grading scheme for their review, because giving it no stars just didn't demonstrate how bad this was. And everything they say is true and unexaggerated. It's worth a read.

Second worst - 'Pollyanna', the musical. This makes Annie look gritty and cutting edge and included the lyric "innocent bride all dressed in white, never had a man so that's alright"!!!

I didn't like Heathers either. I mistakenly thought it was going to be something like Clueless as I'd never heard of the film and didn't do my research.

Why? Was it the acting? The singing?

I'm assuming that the plot and song list didn't come as too much of a shock.
