I agree that personal homes should not be targetted. What I find irritating is that no one seems able to come up with sensible ideas , it's all wishy washy stuff , and doesn't take into account that we shouldn't be asked to return to the stone age.

I agree, anyone can wear a hi-viz vest and highlight a problem but the people that I admire are the ones that come up with the solution

loislovesstewie · 03/08/2023 14:21

Did anyone see the programme about heat pumps on the Beeb the other night? Most interesting, putting the cart before the horse springs to mind.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/08/2023 14:22

It's pretty public knowledge that he's gone to Disneyland. I'm not convinced how effective this will be. Im sure the military will have it away in no time - Catterick Garrison is only down the road

Maybe if someone shows Rishi this video, he might get that creeper pruned back? (misses point entirely.... gorgeous house though)

There is no comparison to be made with suffragettes. They could not access democratic systems.

That doesn't even make sense. Of course they couldn't, that was the whole point of the protests. Greenpeace can, but they aren't. They're resorting to threats - see what we can do. Just like the suffragettes did.

AnSolas · 03/08/2023 14:48

Random789 · 03/08/2023 13:05

Agree with other posters that since his family were in California at the time there are no concerns about frightening the children / indtuding on domesticity.

Perhaps if he just had the one home the protest might have seemed frighteningly intimate, but when you have four or five you probs aren't so emotionally invetsted in each one.

Also, I'm pretty certain that Greenpeace will have approached this with all the health & safety protocols and expertise of an upmarket construction firm.

Crap home security though!

The "I can hit you because you are my wife rich" defense.👍

All this will do is make it much easier for politicians who want to pass legislation to restrict rights around the democratic process.

All the politicians who vote have family
will the politicians making public objection be doing with the same passion when they know it could be their family who are targeted next?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 03/08/2023 14:55

How do you know? what if those children are then too frightened to come back to the house because of this protest? and why is 'well the children weren't frightened so that's OK' the criterion for rightness? that sounds like the argument some women make on the relationship board. 'Yes he hits me and makes me have sex when I don't want to and belittles and insults me but the kids don't know so it doesn't affect them' - at which numerous posters will leap ont o the board to say that children always pick stuff up and it does affect them.

How do you know Sunak's children won't be affected by this? presumably it's OK if his wife is, though.

WarmWinterSun · 03/08/2023 14:58

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain

I think we are at cross purposes. The previous poster was comparing Greenpeace to the suffragettes because both used extreme measures. I’ve heard this before from activists. In my reply I meant that they are not equivalent, because the suffragettes’ behaviour arose out of their complete lack of access to democratic systems. Whilst all of the activists today have equal access to democracy. I agree that the activists are choosing other means to be heard, but this is not a scenario I would compare with the suffragettes.

MrsDanvers I imagine Random789 loves the idea of the children being frightened. I mean, their father is a Tory so they deserve it, don’t they?

Recalls the time when Jacob Rees-Mogg was targeted - and that was aimed at his children

It's not much of an argument to say it's not alarming for them because they weren't there. I doubt many of us would brush it off if our home was damaged, invaded or burgled while we were on holiday. And would it be less alarming for me because I've got a holiday chalet in Dorset? I just don't see it.

It seems to be the case.

Exactly. I can't believe anyone would have their home treated like this and go "yeah but I wasn't in so who cares". You would care.

And this damages their cause far more than it even comes close to winning the hearts and minds of the public that this is something to get behind.

Illegallyblonder · 03/08/2023 15:23

ResisterRex · 03/08/2023 13:44

If politicians won't pay attention they need to be forced to face up to what is happening

Threats then. Like terrorists use.

No way is this stunt a good idea at all. Once we've agreed our elected representatives are legitimate targets (and who cares about their families, collateral damage innit) who's next? Where does it end? What is even the point of elected representatives when we can have unelected activists calling the shots?

I agree - especially with "What is even the point of elected representatives when we can have unelected activists calling the shots?"

Of course they will be emotionally invested in the house:

2022
The Sunak family spend most weekends in North Yorkshire.
2021
Back home in North Yorkshire, Christmas really arrived in the Sunak household with our annual trip to the panto at the Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond.

Hummusanddipdip · 03/08/2023 20:51

Interesting tactic, but like others, his house is not fair game just because he's an mp/not there etc. A government building like Whitehall would have been better... or even any Conservative club 🤷‍♀️

User165753 · 03/08/2023 13:37

Maybe you shouldn't have had them, too late to moan now

Of course it would help combat climate change if the human race died out, but it's not realistic to expect people to stop having children and it's more positive to switch to sustainable ways of living instead.

Protest is an essential part of the democratic process.

But that isn't going to stop this poster being terrified, she must have known as it's been going on a few years now, why would you do something that terrifies you

onefinemess · 03/08/2023 21:12

countrygirl99 · 03/08/2023 14:08

It's not burglary and it'snot criminal damage unless they have damaged something.
But if they can do that what could a terrorist or spy wanting to plant listening devices do? They've highlighted a security weakness.

Legally it IS burglary.

countrygirl99 · 03/08/2023 21:22

Burglary is entering a building. They are on the building.

ssd · 03/08/2023 21:27

Acheyknees · 03/08/2023 10:27

Completely disagree. If we are to encourage people in to politics, their family homes should not be targeted. No wonder the calibre of our elected representatives has never been so low.

You think thats the reason the calibre is so low??

Get a grip

FrankieStein403 · 03/08/2023 21:27

Those saying protests should be in Westminster - you do realise that is now illegal - even the guy with the loudhailer has been moved on.

Protestors are continually having to dream up new ways of getting attention because the government passes laws to stop any protests that are having an impact.

user9630721458 · 03/08/2023 21:34

I can't feel too sorry for Sunak. I had a year of passers by banging on my windows and front door, drunkenly urinating in my alleyway, throwing eggs at my window and door. But apparently nothing could be done since I didn't have CCTV. It certainly wasn't great having the living room window pounded at midnight, pretty alarming really. But it's how the ordinary people live, so I don't see why the rich should get our special sympathy. I don't even work in oil.
