How do I style this awful green colour DS has picked for his room?

He's 12 and I stupidly said he could choose his new bedroom colour.

This is what he's chosen.

Dulux Kiwi Crush.

He has a white wooden high sleeper bed and I was getting him malm drawers in grey but I dunno now.

What floor/bedding etc will make it not look like toxic vomit 😂😭😭

I love that colour, in my sons room I used white furniture and grey soft furnishings.

TheOutlaws · 02/08/2023 15:08

Why don’t you let him paint one of two walls in that colour and the rest white?

My older son had a choice very similar - mind you he is colour blind 😂. I went with navy and white as accent colours - Navy frames of vintage superhero images, painted the wardrobes/wrapped the furniture and it actually looked well.

He now has monochrome!

LadyDanburysHat · 02/08/2023 15:08

Any possibility of limiting it to one wall and having the others white? I painted my DCs room dark grey with white furniture, with that kind of colour for accents, a couple of shelves and cushions. So it would go well with a dark grey.

But it's also only paint and he will grow out of it eventually.

Coffeaddict · 02/08/2023 15:09

Haha I can relate had a similar issue where we let 11 yo DSS pick the colour and he wanted orange, like bright orange.

Anyway we compromised on a contrast wall in bright orange and the rest in a sky blue so it's not too overpowering. Would he be amenable to something like that

Bassetlover · 02/08/2023 15:09

What about an aqua blue bedding set?

ArcticBells · 02/08/2023 15:10

Agree with blue bedding and accessories

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/08/2023 15:11

Why not let him style it how he wants, @GreenMeany? It is his room, after all!

It doesn’t have to be Instagram worthy, or styled to your satisfaction - it simply has to be a room where he is comfortable and happy. Why does it need to be ‘styled’ at all?

Tanyaaah · 02/08/2023 15:11

Why do you need to "style" it? It's his room, he is 12!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 02/08/2023 15:11

I have no idea, but props to you for letting him choose. I can't be doing with carefully curated sad beige Werner Herzog kids' rooms. One of mine has B&Q Gran Via, which is egg yolk yellow Grin.

Ihavekids · 02/08/2023 15:11

Thanks for the reminder to never let a pre teen chose paint.

Crunchingleaf · 02/08/2023 15:12

My DS has a room so blue it’s dazzling when you go into it. He loves it and I keep the door pulled out. Everything else is navy.

12 year old DS have no taste 😂

Falifornia · 02/08/2023 15:15

DD picked B&Q's Bubblegum Pink back in about 2007. It was so vibrant it used to bounce a pink hue down the stairs if the door was open. We won't discuss how many coats it took to paint over it a few years later . . 😂

CandyflossKaren · 02/08/2023 15:16

Does he have Xbox?

Reminds me of that vibe

caringcarer · 02/08/2023 15:17

Oh my eyes. What about one wall in the dayglow and 3 walls in soft silver grey?

This. Then just keep the door closed so you don't have yo look at it.

I don't have any social. Media so you're way off there.

And by 'style it' I mean choose bedding and accessories. I've asked him about those and he has absolutely no interest in giving any input. He shrugged his shoulders and sud 'dunno, you choose'

So I'm gonna try and make the green work a little

The darker grey and lighter wood in these pictures tone it down (rather than it being against the brashness of the pine in your pic

And also I'm happy him choosing a £25 quid tin of paint I can cover, but not letting him choose hundreds of quids worth of furniture and flooring that he will grown out of in 6 months cause he 'doenst like green anymore' or something.

I'm giving him a choice in his room but not free reign.

We had that when ds's orange bedroom was repainted. Made the landing glow. Main difference though was that he had a cream carpet.)
His belongings will take the zing out of it.
One wall had white curtains put across it (window in the middle). His bed had grey bedding. White furniture along one wall. (W'robe and bookcase.). Bookshelf on another and big picture on the last. White ceiling light.

ohsuzannah · 02/08/2023 15:23

I love it. We had it in my dd's room when she was young. We also painted the ceiling yellow.. it was a lovely sunny room 😊

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/08/2023 15:25

Apologies, @GreenMeany - I got the wrong impression from your OP, but if I was harsh, I am sorry.

Blues and teal would go with the green, and would go with other colours if he changes his mind in the future.

StagnantBogOfDespair · 02/08/2023 15:26

Won't sleeping in a giant bogey give him nightmares? I agree with the suggestion for an accent wall.
