How do I style this awful green colour DS has picked for his room?

He's 12 and I stupidly said he could choose his new bedroom colour.

This is what he's chosen.

Dulux Kiwi Crush.

He has a white wooden high sleeper bed and I was getting him malm drawers in grey but I dunno now.

What floor/bedding etc will make it not look like toxic vomit 😂😭😭

I have a dress that colour, I feel a little bit like a glamorous Kermit in it.

DisforDarkChocolate · 02/08/2023 18:21

^ It looks good with navy and french navy accessories.

TheDuchessOfMN · 02/08/2023 18:22

Shrek green and Kermit green are a far better description than Kiwi green Grin

No advice, but does anyone else have Brewers decorator centres adverts in the stream of posts 🤣

Black, white and green. Industrial look furniture

Ha ha we had the exact same thing - let my son (age 6 at the time) choose his paint colour for his room and he also chose Kiwi Crush! At first I was very sceptical but now I love it. He also has a high sleeper bed but in pine colour. He has a soft grey carpet then some Ikea Kalax units with red and grey drawers which give a nice colour contrast and it's a really cheerful room. White bedding.

We had to paint over the previous bright orange wall (think oompa loompa orange) which my other son had chosen 😆. We did confine that colour to one feature wall as it was so migraine inducing! Kids obviously just love bright colours!

I quite like lime green, I've used it before, styled with pink but not sure if your son would like that? George at Asda have a wide selection of bedding, my teens like things from there, so maybe ask him to have a browse. I'd go for white furniture and neutral carpet, prob grey and then there are options to change relatively easily long term.

Just restrict that to one wall , not the whole room.. less of a nightmare trying to paint over it at a later date

This is how we made it work 😀

Get a colour wheel and work with it as much as possible. I am not a fan of the colour, but love the picture @ladyvivienne shared.

PicturesOfDogs · 02/08/2023 19:00

If he wants the green, you could always go hulk theme for bedding etc?

Also the dark malm drawers are technically brown I think, but they look black, so would work if you went with a green and black theme.
Something like this for bedding?

Thankyou but he's not into marvel/superheros anymore, but that would have been cute

Is he into football?

If so, you could have some pictures/art/decals on the walls, with the green to look like the pitch?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/08/2023 19:25

Is he a gamer? Matalan have this in, and they do a lime sheet which matches the wall cover.

As long as you get the right tone orange goes really well with a bright green.

TheDuchessOfMN · 02/08/2023 19:44

That’s really lovely @jellyandgelato but just confirms (for me anyway) that it will only work with neutrals; grey, white, pine etc

EvenlyDetermined · 02/08/2023 19:52

I had that colour bedroom as a young teen, white woodwork, bare floorboards with an oak stain, white furniture and light blue curtains/bedding. A few years later I painted it a deep turquoise with everything else the same, my parents have kept it the same (althought its a study now not a bedroom), 40 years later and still looks good. It gets a lot of daylight which helps.

MrsMarzetti · 02/08/2023 20:01

Add Navy, navy and more navy.

Whatnogreen · 02/08/2023 20:05

Add a nice red drum kit 🤣
My back room (family/dining/conservatory) is the same colour. Grey carpets and furniture, light oak wood. We like it.

Haha I can relate had a similar issue where we let 11 yo DSS pick the colour and he wanted orange, like bright orange.

Anyway we compromised on a contrast wall in bright orange and the rest in a sky blue so it's not too overpowering. Would he be amenable to something like that

DS1 once had bright orange too, he stuck it out for about a year before confessing it was a mistake and 'like sleeping in a sainsburys bag' Grin

Lemonsole · 02/08/2023 20:13

My son has had that colour since he was 6 - he's now 16. He's got a pine high sleeper (no choice of colour) but with glossy while IKEA Pax wardrobe and white Malm / Billy. With all his posters, swimming medals and photo wall it looks great.

LlynTegid · 02/08/2023 21:12

Are you sure? Try and talk him out of it.
