How do I style this awful green colour DS has picked for his room?

He's 12 and I stupidly said he could choose his new bedroom colour.

This is what he's chosen.

Dulux Kiwi Crush.

He has a white wooden high sleeper bed and I was getting him malm drawers in grey but I dunno now.

What floor/bedding etc will make it not look like toxic vomit 😂😭😭

I think it could look quite nice with some greys and whites, maybe broken up into stripes or blocks like these photos.

That is actually lovely! I think I'll base it off that if DS approves.

Thankyou!

My son chose a similar colour and l found navy looked good with the green, so we chose navy blinds and navy patterned bedspread. His carpet was a pale beigey colour but you could add a cream/ neutral rug to soften the expanse of floor. Some white shelves and furniture would make a big difference too.

I like it 😎 It’s on my list of preferred colours for when I get round to decorating. I think a dark teal blue would go nicely, maybe with small amounts of the right-toned yellow (kind of a sweetcorn yellow not neon).

Dark blue bedding would work with that.

IndianSummer78 · 02/08/2023 16:30

Go tropical? Lots of other greens and some red, the odd bit of brown

minipie · 02/08/2023 16:32

Has he seen the pic of what it looks like in a whole room? I’d want to be very sure he would like it once on the whole room. I can imagine my DC choosing a similarly bright colour but then finding it overwhelming in reality. Can you mock it up with big bits of paper painted in that colour?

Growlybear83 · 02/08/2023 16:33

I think it's a lovely colour and would look great with black.

FKATondelayo · 02/08/2023 16:34

My kids' entire room is that colour and same wooden floor - big white painted bay window, white woodwork and shelving, soft grey curtains and grey accents.

Stravaig · 02/08/2023 16:36

You encourage whatever his latest interests are with very large posters on every wall :)

ThingammyBob · 02/08/2023 16:36

My son has that colour in his room and it actually looks really nice. We went with black and white for bedding and accessories.

justaweeone · 02/08/2023 16:37

Attached some ideas, but add in some plants and some dark grey or charcoal accessories

My son has a bright green wall in his room - he has jungle/dinosaur stuff so works well.

MarkWithaC · 02/08/2023 16:37

I like that colour!
Dark blue furniture, and judicious cherry-red for other stuff.

Why is everyone assuming I don't want to do it? If I didn't, I would day no. Its his room, he's a kid, of course he's not going to choose 'soft meadow ivory' or some such thing.

I was just asking what would go with it as its not a colour I personally like, but his his room and he's 12!

Sorry! Didn't mean to come across like that, really - just was trying to give a more positive perspective in case it helped, because you did say you wanted to stop it looking like toxic vomit 😂 I was sort of going for the concept of not having to worry about things looking cohesive, because for now, the kids live at home and it's all just part and parcel of the cosy family home vibe.

inappropriateraspberry · 02/08/2023 16:39

I'd go with white furniture to keep it fresh and bright. What are his interests/hobbies?

DelphiniumBlue · 02/08/2023 16:41

DS2 chose that colour for his (tiny) room at about that age.
Woodwork around the room and drawers were white, but wood would look nice too. I'd put a very patterned jungly type print for bedding( can be cheaply replaced) and keep furniture fairly classic, either white or wood, whatever you are more likely to be able to re-use in a different colour scheme when he changes b his mind in about 3 years time!

Blues and greens, I'd say

GrouchyKiwi · 02/08/2023 16:44

I used to smile every time I walked into that room GreenMeany. The colour was so cheerful and bright and actually quite lovely, even though it was like being inside a lime.

yumscrumm · 02/08/2023 16:45

Love the colour!!! Daughters is similar but broken down with large white built in furniture and one wall is wallpaper

I think you just need to break it up a bit so it's not great expanses of bright green. If you can, get big posters/prints with lots of white space around them in the frames, like in the link I posted.

ActDottie · 02/08/2023 16:46

It’s fine he likes it it doesn’t have to be styled! He just has to like what is in the room. I remember choosing a lime green carpet for my room when I was little. I loved it! But in hindsight it was hideous!

GreenMeany · 02/08/2023 16:48

He's approved this vibe!

Wow, I think I had a lime carpet too! I'd totally blocked that out 😂
