We have a business, not cakes but digital and so many people expect DH to work for free it's unbelievable. Even the one who pay are in no hurry to do so and we are constantly missing payments for bills. These people have no idea what it's like to be a small business.

Whoever posted that isn't very bright. The bakery owner didn't want exposure, YOU, whoever you are, gave it to her. Along with the chance to expose the parasites that are influencers. A dignified silence would have been much better, but some people just can't resist trying to have the last word

It's also really poor marketing strategy for the bakery business, but the party planners / that rubbish Strictly woman won't see it like that.

It's one thing being asked for a freebie for Elton John, or Madonna, or Tom Cruise or Margot Robbie. For a party which is going to be featured in ALL the glossy magazines and websites worldwide. And when you're making a product which can be posted to Los Angeles or Tokyo. That is valuable to a business.

This "opportunity" was to provide multiple cakes for a not very famous even within the UK person, whose party would possibly feature in one magazine, and when you're making a product which cannot be easily shipped. So really this "opportunity" is only going to appeal to fans of the actress who live within 30 minutes of Keighley, and who are in the market for a celebration cake. Not many people.

If I was in charge of marketing for the bakery I'd be spending the money I would have spend on this freebie on things like attending local wedding fayres, getting on approved supplier lists for local hotels and events venues, advertising in local papers or targetted social media adverts for local people who are actually looking to buy a cake.

Influencers ask for free stuff in exchange for exposure, small companies send influencers free stuff and ask for the exposure. I am not one to be “influenced” but it doesn’t take a genius with a marketing degree to work out it happens from both sides and can often be mutually beneficial.

Whoever this woman is from the events company who sent the email just clearly picked the wrong bakery. Another bakery might have jumped at the chance. Heck there might be dozens of local small bakeries reading that DM article today thinking “I’ll send her the cakes!”.

We don’t know how much stuff this actress is sent requesting she posts about it. She might be inundated with such requests and keeps it to herself.

Reminds me of the response a would-be influencer got from the White Moose café a few years ago. It was along the lines that while the influencer had a few thousand followers the cafe had many multiples of this so no, they would not accept the coverage as payment.

I see we're all expected to buy into the argument that the PR company would have paid for all the cakes. Except they have said that in the email, nor in the press release.

Covering costs is not the same as paying for the items - it doesn't include any profits for a start, which is how a small business survives.

We're also now expected to feel sorry for the Z-list celeb (who I couldn't have picked out of a line up) because she is doing sad Insta pieces to camera in her car in the rain 🙄 because she didn't know wah wah wah. They were well within their rights to ask, lots of companies jump at the chance - thats quite literally how the awful influencer model works. bakery quite rightly said no.
