Ah yes, Catherine Tyldesley, the gifters grifter. You just need to see her Insta to recognise that. I used to follow her after she was on strictly and this is the very reason I stopped.

That's interesting. Perhaps someone will go back through some of her previous Insta and put a spotlight on it, now she's kicked up such a fuss!

Fizbosshoes · 03/08/2023 08:55

How did it become apparent that it was her?
The original email doesn't mention her name so the baker involved wouldn't have known it was her...would they?
I suppose in a way she is a bit of a scapegoat as influencers and celebs probably do this all the time and no one bats an eyelid. She won't be the first and she won't be the last....although her reaction to it on Instagram didn't really make her seem either apologetic or likeable!

Comefromaway · 03/08/2023 09:21

How did it become apparent that it was her?

Another bakery who was also approached named her

Hapshetshut · 03/08/2023 09:30

People sussed it out on tattle too because of when her and her husbands birthdays are

funinthesun19 · 03/08/2023 09:44

Love the bakery’s response. Right to the point, which the agents or whoever approached her are clearly missing.

Small businesses do have bills and mortgages to pay and children to feed, so the fact that they asked her in the first place just shows how out of touch and tone deaf they are. It was a shit deal that held absolutely no certainty of extra custom to the bakery owner.

I don’t understand why these deals need to be made in the first place, and why celebrities can’t just put their hands in their pockets and pay for the things they want instead. I’m sure Catherine can afford 100 cakes quite easily. And if she can’t, then she’ll have to cut her cloth like the rest of us won’t she? But I doubt she’s in that position, so just bloody pay with actual MONEY.

If I lived closer, I would definitely be buying some cakes from her now 😊 I hope business booms for her!

00100001 · 03/08/2023 09:46

Sounds like a birthday party for a 4 year old, not a 40 year old woman "The list of requests included a main cake to fit in with the theme of ‘pinks, sparkles and a touch of flamingos'."

Bloody hell.

Flopsythebunny · 03/08/2023 09:49

FuppingEll · 02/08/2023 14:03

Exactly. This isn't a new thing for that business. Not at all. Why did they choose to 'expose' this actress but not the 100s if other requests they get? Why not Harold from Hull with 1000 followers? They knew exactly what they were doing, I bet they were hopping with excitement when that message landed in their inbox.

Why shouldn't they expose parasites like this?

RenoDakota · 03/08/2023 10:01

Saw an interesting comment from someone who said that Jane Danson and Simon Gregson (imo 'proper' Corrie stars) pay suppliers generously AND promote their work on social media too.
Way more classy.

RoseAndRose · 03/08/2023 10:09

Clymene · 03/08/2023 08:44

It's made the Times today and she's gone full DARVO Hmm

“I’ve always supported local and small businesses. The abuse I have been receiving online is horrendous so hopefully this will put an end to it. And here’s to turning 40!”

Please tell me that's a misquote.

Surely no-one can be that obtuse and lacking in awareness. The email from her planners was bad, and was made public exposing exactly why it was bad. He first response was awful. I didn't think she could do worse, then I read this.

BurntOrange · 03/08/2023 11:08

I know Bec, she's a lovely person. I've had a number of the bakery's cakes and they are incredible

And? Don't you think it's about time these people desperate for freebies from small businesses should be highlighted? They should be, every single time. No one should expect something for nothing.

wayyour · 03/08/2023 11:48

Fizbosshoes · 03/08/2023 07:44

Completely missing the point here but what is happening in the Instagram video? Her face looks really angular and her mouth doesn't match what shes saying iyswim, it seems a bit distorted....can you filter videos? (I'm so ignorant of this kind of thingBlush)

I think she is being VU in the insta clip BTW, I was just a bit distracted!

I think there was some sort of filtering in the video.

A really bad move though, she should have taken some advice first. A full and frank apology, and some free publicity for the bakery would have been more gracious, rather than defending the company.

MavisChunch29 · 03/08/2023 13:52

I feel sorry for Catherine Tyldesley, you'd think she'd strangled kittens the way people have gone on about it on FB and Twitter, and now here, and I thought she looked a bit fragile in the video and has obviously been rather harassed by journalists.

Surely it was a PR company making the request not her herself. It's all rather an over the top reaction.

The bakery was freely able to say no, piss off, or send them their prices for the service, and the bakery has got loads of free publicity by publicising this.

There was no strong arming involved or imbalance of power.

It would have been different if they'd had a contract and refused to pay or something- that would be appalling.

Am I missing something or is there more to it?

No, I don't think they should be exposed. What exactly have they done wrong, legally, morally, etc?

I have heard Kelly is a diva anyway. My friend was at a medical appointment once when K was pregnant and at the same hospital and K wanted an area cleared in the main waiting bit for privacy.

Who is Kelly?

wayyour · 03/08/2023 13:56

@MavisChunch29 I think her video response angered people. She shouldn't have defended the company, and kept it to a simple apology to the bakery owners.

Though I'm surprised it was front page in the Guardian yesterday! I'd never heard of her before.

Perhaps it was naive to make the video but it is just a weird pile on.

I always liked her on Corrie, enjoyed her performance on Strictly and in other dramas she's been in and always hoped she'd be as successful as Suranne Jones and Sally Lindsay. Good luck to her a pox on the bakery I say, I think they are the chiselling spivs in all this.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 03/08/2023 14:04

Whatever happened to paying for a product/service and then leaving a nice review or recommending it if they're good on whatever platform you may have at your disposal (whether that be talking over the fence to your neighbour or an Instagram account with tens of thousands of followers). 🙄

Sorry having a menopause moment. Was thinking Catherine Kelly .

wayyour · 03/08/2023 14:31

@MavisChunch29
It's turning into a bit of a pile on, but handled differently it needn't have been so bad. I think it's also possible people are sick of these Instagram influencers and their requests for free things, or promotions. This was a small business, not a large chain. She could still turn things around and salvage something. Take down the video for a start.

The bakery is doing well out of the unexpected publicity, so I think that is nice for them.

WeetabixTowels · 03/08/2023 14:34

I think there is a ‘pile on’ because of the horrible, nonsensical, arrogant Instagram video response and her totally unnecessary swipe at the bakery owner whose cakes she’d have only been too happy to get for free.

Had CT kept it to a simple apology and “Well this is awkward, I am so sorry to the bakery and didn’t expect ANYTHING for free - I hope they do very well and good luck to them” it would have blown over. But the response was indicative of a rather spiteful and nasty self centred human.

WeetabixTowels · 03/08/2023 14:35

It was also such a weird response about NVRLND - “They’re amazing…they’re insane…they’ve sent me performers before”

Im sorry are you the Queen of a small principality?! Why are you having performers sent to you?

Yusay · 03/08/2023 14:40

GoingToBeLessRubbishAtLife · 02/08/2023 02:22

I don’t think it was her, it sounds like it was the party planners wasn’t it?

This!

I’d hate to be responsible for everyone word ever said by anyone I’ve hired. The party planners were trying to get stuff for free while probably charging their client a fortune. But this country loved to hate attractive famous women so let’s all bitch about the birthday girl, who’s since been quite clear that she didn’t know the email was sent and would never have asked for free stuff.

The bakery could have said no politely, posting a private email all over social media was a shitty thing to do.

Who is the attractive famous woman you are referring to?
