It's not just rain it's so windy every day

Why are the winds so high every day in July and into August?

It’s coming back mid August and will hopefully continue through September. May and June were lovely.

popgoesthecat2 · 30/07/2023 19:54

I think we may get a few days of mid-high 20s at the end of August, then a few pleasant days in mid September and then that will be it.

Some people will then say we had 'weeks of sweltering heat' when in reality, we had a couple of days we needed to wear shorts and t shirts and maybe put the fan on for 20 minutes.

Sooze2023 · 30/07/2023 20:08

Let's just hope 2023 is a late starter and we'll get an Indian summer 🙏. I work in education and can't get leave from mid August but would love some warm sunny weekends before we launch into winter.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 30/07/2023 20:34

@HashtagShitShop Same here with the overheating/inner thermostat issues leading to being soaked in sweat! Do you get it all over your face & scalp too? It's completely destroyed my life.

BarelyLiterate · 30/07/2023 20:39

I’ve just watched the Countryfile forecast. The weather is getting worse, not better - literally October weather ☔️💨⛈️. It’s incredibly depressing. I wasn’t going to have a drink tonight, but I’ve opened a bottle of wine.

morelippy · 30/07/2023 20:39

@AnoyDad2023 no, Europe, Asia, Canada etc are not 'on fire'. Such drama does not help, it just makes people roll their eyes.

@Pootle40 it's really not that hard to look at historical weather conditions. It has not been raining non stop in Glasgow every day in July. In fact most afternoons have been sunny.

Yeah between 2-2.45pm

June wasn't beautiful for the whole country, but we did have a few lovely days—hardly a summer. We have not had one dry day since the end of June, the wind and rain have been horrendous. As soon as we were placed on a hosepipe ban, the rain came and hasn't left. Every day is gloomy. On occasion, we get perhaps an hour, but that's been it. It's depressing. 😭 Tonight it's forecast around 6-8 degrees... in summer!

Where do you live?! The forecast low here tonight is 16°. Even in Edinburgh it's 13°.

Same my lovely. It's called hyperhidrosis. It's a hit and miss thing to react to various things that help. There is medication, speak to your doctor. Only one sort worked for me but there's 3 different sorts you can trial x good luck lovely.

AreMyDucksinarow · 30/07/2023 22:04

I was that cold on Tuesday I put a fire on (probably cause it had been so damp as it has been raining for nearly a week) I really felt the chill. Allegedly it’s 14 degrees at the moment if you add the rain and the windchill it’s bloody cold…I’m in my fluffy pjs and thick socks.

June was great, as were a few days in July, the past couple of weeks it’s just been rubbish!

Dh & I have this week off and guess what it’s bloody raining ☔️ for most of it!

Qilin · 30/07/2023 22:14

This is not summer weather!

This definitely isn't sitting in the garden, or having the windows open all day type summery weather.

This is pretty cold, very wet and very grey.

The Saturday after this is predicted some sun and 18c, but still risk of rain and 18c isn't exactly warm weather! Fortunately I will be flying somewhere hot and sunny (with the odd tropical type downpour) for a fortnight after that!

Whinge · 31/07/2023 08:19

But if you want the whole of summer to be sunshine and pleasant 20-30 C temperatures, you're in the wrong country

Right now I think most of us would settle for dry weather. Unfortunately looking at the forecast for the next week and beyond even that looks like an impossible dream right now. 😔

Summersunshineplease · 31/07/2023 08:48

Woken up to more rain and wind. Another day of it

Same here. It would be almost comically funny if it was messing up so many of the lovely things I'd planned for the holidays.

Disclaimer - Yes we could wear suitable wet weather clothing and there's no such thing as bad weather etc but honestly I don't fucking want to have to wear a raincoat and wellies everytime I leave the house in July and August.

Summersunshineplease · 31/07/2023 09:04

It's not just the rain either . It's the wind and it's crap being outside in it even with rain clothes

madeinmanc · 31/07/2023 09:10

Just a very selfish thing to add about the lack of sun which is that when it's sunny my neighbours (teachers) go out all day and I get peace and quiet to work in, but in this weather they'll just stay home and unfortunately they're very noisy.

Fizbosshoes · 31/07/2023 09:33

I live around 30 miles north of London and we had several weeks of nice weather in June (we had a weekend on the south coast and it was definitely late 20s, possibly 30 then)
But in July I've needed my umbrella on many more occasions than I've needed sunscreen. (I used sunscreen on 1st July - I'm pretty sure I haven't needed it since!)

And I don't think the things are mutually exclusive - you can be concerned about climate change and worried about the fires in Europe (I'm grateful it's not 40° + here) and still be a bit fed up of days/weeks of cool, dull windy rainy weather in a month that generally has (at least some) warm dry weather.

EarringsandLipstick · 31/07/2023 09:40

Ok, I'm back & suitably grumpy.

The effect of the fabulous weather I enjoyed in West Cork has worn off, and I'm staring out at a grey, rain-filled, windy vista. It's so depressing.

I'm on my last day of leave before starting back to work tomorrow; I don't really need to be outside as it's a serious house-decluttering & financial planning day but the kids are feral, I'm exhausted & the weather is really not helping.

rainbowstardrops · 31/07/2023 11:34

Grey, raining, windy and miserable here today. Yet again.
I feel sorry for parents/carers who have to try and entertain young children in this weather.
When mine were school age, we'd go for picnics in the park and on the beach as they were cheap full days out but I wouldn't want a picnic out in this!
The weather invariably turned beautiful early September when we all went back to school and I got sick of hearing what a fantastic Indian summer we were having! No, I wanted the summer in the bloody summer holidays!!!!

IClaudine · 31/07/2023 11:38

It is atrocious and I am totally fed up of it. My garden looks sad as lots of the the flowers have been battered by wind and rain ⛈️. This is the worst July (and early August looking at the forecast) for a very long time

IClaudine · 31/07/2023 11:44

Oh, it is going to be dry here tomorrow! Thrilling!

FriedEggChocolate · 31/07/2023 11:51

I'm waiting for our tomatoes to even start ripening. Last year, the heat meant they ripened really quickly but we onlyhave about 3 even thinking of going red. I know that we don't want Greek-type temperatures but even just dry would be good.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 31/07/2023 12:12

Haven’t been able to cut the grass for a month.

CruCru · 31/07/2023 13:05

I am somewhere that people often book holidays to visit. One thing I’ve really noticed is how few houseguests we’ve had this summer.
