It's not just rain it's so windy every day

Why are the winds so high every day in July and into August?

And the first half of July... Sports Day at school was horrendously hot.

Where are you? I don't remember a single hot day this year in the SW. We've had some nice warm weather but no hot days like last year.

What last few years?! Is this some secret club l don’t know about. Last year was hot. The rest have been crap.

I suppose it depends what part of the country you live in. Some parts have had summers in the 30s and 40s others have had the same as this year.

Yes, last year was the first time in years that I needed to buy aftersun (teen decided to walk long distances in the middle of the day after GCSEs)

Our definition of ‘horrendously hot’ differs greatly. Horrendous for me is from mid 30’s.

It’s depressing I hate this weather, grey, windy just miserable. For me 25-30 is bliss.

For me 30+ is hot, 35+ is very hot, 40+ horrendously hot

Yetisrus29 · 30/07/2023 12:53

I can't remember the last time I sat in the garden and read or took my laptop outside and worked. It's been miserable. I do believe some time in June it was nice but it's August on Tuesday.

I had a lovely tan last year even before my holiday this year I'm considering faking it.

Keykaty · 30/07/2023 12:53

Winter is long enough ye Gods up there thank you!

I suppose we just have to take things as we find them, not much we can do about the weather. But it does bring people down for sure. So many glum faces around, and the little kids are bored out of their minds too.

What affects me most is the lack of spontaneity. We cannot just decide to get up and out without a backpack full of wet gear and a flask! TBH I don't bother, nothing worse than being drenched under a leaden heavy grey sky is there?

Have to have hope though, and maybe later in the month we will be complaining about the heat!

Apart from virtually the entire of June, you mean? I’ve got through loads of suncream already this year.

Wow do you live in the whole of the UK? Impressive!

We have had a few days of good weather since the end of May but June gave us the worst flooding we've ever had and it's been wet and windy ever since. We're in the Midlands. We have livestock and crops so what the weather is doing has a big impact on us.

SoupDragon · 30/07/2023 11:04

it's been utterly shit here. Rainy, grey... autumn basically. There's not been nearly enough summer to get me through the shit 9+ months of the year.

Same. I had awful SAD last winter and was desperate for spring and summer to come. It feels like they just didnt bother this year, apart from some nice days in June, and it's just going straight back to autumn in the next few weeks. So depressing.

PuppyMonkey · 30/07/2023 13:09

Okay I feel I should confess it’s all my fault because I painted my toenails on about June 24th before I went on holiday to Yorkshire and apart from one further day of it being nice, I don’t think I’ve worn my sandals since. Sorry everyone.

My ideal is late teens/low 20s. I like it warm enough not to need heating but nice and cool. Like now

Floofydawg · 30/07/2023 13:11

I suspect summer happened in the UK when I was in Spain in June. No good to me whatsoever. It'll probably be glorious in the UK again when I go abroad in September 😡

DoorstoManual · 30/07/2023 13:16

We have had a summer.

It was on Tuesday. IIRC😂No seriously June was pleasant.

We are retired and last summer we spent a lot of time having a morning cup of coffee on the patio in warm (not hot weather) this year that one Tuesday aside,🙄 we haven’t done it.

I grew up by the sea and I am used to a breeze, the constant wind is boring.

TweetyMcTweetFace · 30/07/2023 13:17

@PuppyMonkey I was about to confess it's all my fault. We bought a new parasol for our picnic table on the last known sunny day...we've just bought a rain cover for it as we haven't used it once!

mondaytosunday · 30/07/2023 13:21

It's been low 20s in London, which I think is fairly average fue summer. A bit wetter than I'd like, true. But there's still August snd next weekend looks ok at the moment!

mistermagpie · 30/07/2023 13:23

Rainbowshit · 30/07/2023 10:58

@Plump82 I'm in Glasgow.

I finished work at 12 on Friday and spent the afternoon sunbathing in the garden. It was glorious. I actually sat out until 9pm.

I even managed a short amount of time in my bikini in the garden yesterday and then it rained on and off.

I'm in Glasgow. It was 19 degrees in my garden on Friday, hardly bikini weather in my opinion!

OrigamiOwls · 30/07/2023 13:27

I think some people forget not everyone has the same weather everywhere!
We didn't seem to have a proper spring this year. Then June was okay, not warm but not too wet. July has been pouring it down most days. It has been a rubbish few months here.

Comedycook · 30/07/2023 13:32

I'm in Spain but coming home tomorrow 😥the weather forecast for London is showing rain every day for the next two weeks. I have a ton of holiday washing but doubt I will even be able to hang it outside. It's really shit for the kids on school holiday not to even have a couple of nice sunny days to play out, have a picnic, go to the beach.

Okay, yes all your fault - phew I’m off the hook. Grin

Amethystanddiamonds · 30/07/2023 13:40

@Comedycook but if you do get a couple of dry hours, have industrial strength clothes pegs and the time to spend to keep a close eye on the incoming rain, the gale force winds are drying washing quite quickly 🙄

I'm easy, I like 16 to 35. So the temperature is nice enough now, its the constant drizzle that gets to me. It's fine for working outside but I've tried sitting outside with a cider only for clouds to come over a few times now.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/07/2023 13:53

Summer has been and gone I think
It was two beautiful weeks in June !

CornishGem1975 · 30/07/2023 13:55

I mean, just because it was nice in June doesn't mean we shouldn't be able to reasonably expect a few dry days in July and August, or be disappointed when the weather shits over our summer holidays.

"But remember June was lovely". Great.

Kimfluencer · 30/07/2023 13:56

I wish we had reliable sunshine for a month or so. Just early 20s, dry, nice enough for a picnic or a day at the beach or just to sit in the garden and eat dinner outside.

Appalling this year. Grey and windy in London. I’m going away later in August, so am one of the lucky ones who will get some sun. I find this weather so depressing, especially after a long winter.

Good to know. Although I absolutely hate hanging out laundry then it rains and dragging it back indoors...such a pain

JaneyGee · 30/07/2023 14:28

Hasn't bothered me. Long may it continue. Maybe I'm odd, but I loathe, loathe, loathe hot sunshine. Last summer was torture. The heat reduced me to tears more than once. If I had to choose between the rain and the kind of heat they're experiencing in Greece, I'd take the rain every time.

The UK isn't suited to hot summers. We're too densely populated – too many people, too many cars, and too many houses all jammed on top of one another. Chuck in a 90 degree heatwave and it's a nightmare.

What I really hope is that we get an Indian summer. I never love the UK more than during a sunny Autumn. There is literally nowhere in the world I'd rather be than Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Bath, York, Edinburgh etc on a bright, cold October day, with the leaves browning and the smell of bonfires everywhere. A nice coffee shop, a mooch around the cathedrals and bookstalls...bliss.
