It's not just rain it's so windy every day

Why are the winds so high every day in July and into August?

We're in Ireland. June was fabulous but since the start of July we've had precisely two dry days; I know because I had to spend them both in the garden, trying to restrain it from eating the house. Every other day has been far too wet to cut the grass.

RosieBurdock · 30/07/2023 10:40

I love how cool its been. You can do more. Last summer was awful.

EarringsandLipstick · 30/07/2023 10:42

Never felt like we had a spring

That's true. Ireland (my part!) was very cold & un-springlike this year.

(I tend to forget quickly!)

I quite like the cooler temps and even some rain!

I also like cooler temps and a bit of rain. What i don't like is fierce winds and heavy downpours, which is what we seem to have had for the last 3 - 4 weeks.

That's true! I'm just back from 2 lovely weeks & I know it's been rotten here, so I think I'm still inured! I did find it very chilly, which it wasn't in West Cork.

By tomorrow I'll be full-on moaning!!

Yes, this. Can spend more of the day outside. I remember a really hot summer a few years ago when I had a newborn and two-year-old going to the park at 8am because it was the only time it wasn't completely unbearable.

ssd · 30/07/2023 10:44

No, the bad weather start right around the 26th of june and stops around the 18th Aug.

It lasts 6-7 weeks to coincide with the Scottish school holidays.

This is is exactly the same.

Bluevelvetsofa · 30/07/2023 10:44

There was no spring, June was OK, July has been shit. No need for a weather forecast, it’s the same every day. Grey, miserable and very windy.

You can't do more though can you when it's blowing a gale and chucking it down. It's hammering it down again here yet again!

I just want a dry day where I'm not dodging torrential rain storms and gale force winds where the temperature is above 20° which is apparently a very unreasonable request in July and August of the forecasts are in any way accurate which I've no reason to suspect otherwise.

HashtagShitShop · 30/07/2023 10:46

It's been grey but dry here on the east coast for most of it. When it has rained it's been over in minutes most of the time.

It's so muggy and humid even when it is grey, I hate it. Looking forward to actual winter.

(I have a medical condition that means I can't control my inner thermostat so the slightest bit of movement 80 percent of the times means I'm dripping with sweat like I've done a marathon and have kidney concerns due to how quickly I dehydrate. Winter whilst not perfect is much better for me)

RocketIceLollie · 30/07/2023 10:47

Summer started really well but as soon Wimbledon started summer pretty much finished.

I wish. It's rained for hours / whole days at a time here

I don't mind it being cool but I am sick of the rain.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/07/2023 10:53

Think we have got used to long unbroken days of warm dry still days in summer holidays

When did we get used to this? When?

It’s never been like that! I long for ‘long unbroken days of warm still days’ Last year maybe, but honestly I’d have to go back to near the start of the century to remember a long hot summer.

Sugarflowers · 30/07/2023 10:57

I'm in Scotland. My dc want us to move.

They are well travelled and feel like the weather really impacts on the kind of outdoor lifestyle they want to have. This spring and summer has been cold and wet, and frankly it just feels crap.

ShiteRider · 30/07/2023 10:57

I missed the summer if we had it in June. I do vaguely remember people moaning about how hot it was and thinking ‘where? It’s low 20s here’ It was definitely not worthy of being called summer.

It’s depressing to have such grey and dreary weather over such a consistently long time.

Rainbowshit · 30/07/2023 10:58

@Plump82 I'm in Glasgow.

I finished work at 12 on Friday and spent the afternoon sunbathing in the garden. It was glorious. I actually sat out until 9pm.

I even managed a short amount of time in my bikini in the garden yesterday and then it rained on and off.

MMorales · 30/07/2023 11:00

BelindaBears · 30/07/2023 10:22

Apart from virtually the entire of June, you mean? I’ve got through loads of suncream already this year.

I both our suncream early for the year.

It got used up in June so bought some more and extra for the rest of the summer, not needed to use any since.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 30/07/2023 11:02

We only had a few weeks of reasonable weather - sunshine, mid/upper-20s - here in June (Lincolnshire). I believe further west it was glorious for weeks on end. It is a bit depressing - some patches of sunshine but then thick cloud and a strong breeze. The humidity is unpleasant, particularly at night.

SoupDragon · 30/07/2023 11:04

it's been utterly shit here. Rainy, grey... autumn basically. There's not been nearly enough summer to get me through the shit 9+ months of the year.

Finnygook · 30/07/2023 11:05

Here in the South West it’s been a real mix.

Yesterday I left the house in my raincoat to walk the dog and by the end (only an hour) I was in my T-shirt, raincoat around my waist wishing I could apply sun cream! The rest of the day was warm and sunny and we were out in the garden. Today it’s grey and rainy again.

Pretty much sums up our summer so far to be honest, we’ve had it all from lovely beach days to those warm but windy ideal laundry drying days and days like last Saturday where it was torrential rain all day. It makes planning what to do a bloody nightmare.

I do prefer it to last year though when I struggled to sleep from the heat and just found it uncomfortable generally. But I guess it’s easy to say that when I’m in a part of the country that is getting a bit of sunshine still.

isitaline97 · 30/07/2023 11:05

It's felt like it's rained for a month straight here in the north west! I'm almost 36 weeks pregnant though so actually a little thankful though 😅

40° last year (admittedly for one day) was pretty horrible... but then recently we've had several weeks where its been dull, and/or windy and rainy (often both) and temperatures have struggled to reach 20° .

18° and raining isn't particularly great for "going out and doing things" in terms of parks, farms, the beach and outdoor activities that you associate with summer holidays. Of course you can go out in the rain but its not especially conducive to picnics or spending all day outside (I think nicer weather eg early- mid 20s and dry, is easier to do free, or minimal spend days esp with young kids)

BelindaBears · 30/07/2023 11:08

Where do you live? We’ve never had that in my living memory and I’m nearly 40. The weather is always a bit shit in the summer holidays. May and June always nicer.

Oh I hope so! Nothing I like better than beautiful September weather.

I would be thankful - I was due late Aug during a heatwave and it was hell, I spend most of my days sadly wallowing in our paddling pool like a hippo while everyone else was loving life!
