It's not just rain it's so windy every day

Why are the winds so high every day in July and into August?

If I had to choose between the rain and the kind of heat they're experiencing in Greece, I'd take the rain every time.

But you don't need to choose. Confused It doesn't need to be torrential rain or temperatures of 40°, there's a middle ground.

All I want is a dry, slightly sunny day.

Indeed. I don't understand why people who love this miserable crap weather insist on painting it as an either or choice between this and 40°+ with raging wildfires.

I just want some dry slightly warm days where it doesn't piss it down for hours on end in what is supposed to be the only part of the year where constant rain, grey skies and gale force winds are not considered the norm.

Hasn't bothered me. Long may it continue. Maybe I'm odd, but I loathe, loathe, loathe hot sunshine. Last summer was torture. The heat reduced me to tears more than once. If I had to choose between the rain and the kind of heat they're experiencing in Greece, I'd take the rain every time.

The UK isn't suited to hot summers. We're too densely populated – too many people, too many cars, and too many houses all jammed on top of one another. Chuck in a 90 degree heatwave and it's a nightmare.

What I really hope is that we get an Indian summer. I never love the UK more than during a sunny Autumn. There is literally nowhere in the world I'd rather be than Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Bath, York, Edinburgh etc on a bright, cold October day, with the leaves browning and the smell of bonfires everywhere. A nice coffee shop, a mooch around the cathedrals and bookstalls...bliss.

Long may it continue.

well, lucky for you the rest of the year is usually damp and grey too.

I quite like the cooler temps and even some rain!

I also like cooler temps and a bit of rain. What i don't like is fierce winds and heavy downpours, which is what we seem to have had for the last 3 - 4 weeks.

Same here. I'm bloody sick of it now! It's been raining torrentially almost non stop since the beginning of July where I am.

It's absolutely impossible to do anything out of doors (fortunately no school age DC to worry about though) and the garden looks awful with everything collapsing under too much rain/wind.

Soulesssummer · 30/07/2023 14:59

Just been in garden and one of our trees is shedding it's leaves which have turned brown /golden autumn colours. Never before has this happened in July. What is going on 😟

My DD noticed trees doing this and commented we're already in autumn. Absolutely gutting

Furries · 30/07/2023 15:33

Not sure which is annoying me more - the weather or the flipping “at least we haven’t got the high temperature and fires in Greece”! I don’t think anyone is daft enough to be wishing for that.

Grey and muggy, grey and windy, grey and raining. I am so over the relentless grey skies. No spring, May was stupidly windy (a bitingly cold wind), June had a few pleasant days, July has been pretty much constant grey.

Am going to find autumn/winter hard if we don’t get some pleasant sunshine soon.

Silvered · 30/07/2023 16:14

Manchester here as well. I know it has a reputation for rain but this summer has been really bad. April and May are usually nice but they were really cold and wet. June was glorious and then at the end of the month the rain started and it hasn't stopped.

I can count on one hand the number of completely dry days we have had here since then. The really annoying thing is that it's either constant rain, or intermittent - so you can't get out to cut the grass or sort the garden or get your washing dry. This is the worst summer we've had for a long time. Our ten day forecast has us at a high of 12 degrees and rain every single day...

It's really not

It really is though.

Marchflower · 30/07/2023 16:27

It’s really depressing. For those saying better this than heat, we are predominantly a grey, rainy country, so the few weeks of summer can be a lifeline for those of us with SAD or who rely on the sunshine to break things up. The thought of going straight through to autumn like this honestly fills me with dread. I’ve booked 2 weeks in the Southern Hemisphere in winter to get some sun

Ozgirl75 · 30/07/2023 16:35

It has been so crap. I’ve got photos of me in early May when it was a tiny bit sunny wearing exactly the same as I’m wearing today, in the middle of high summer! Jeans and a fucking jumper every single day.
Last summer I had so many lovely long evenings sitting outside, but this year even when it was a bit warmer in June the evenings were pretty chilly.
We’re in the south as well where it’s normal to have at least slightly warmer temps in summer but today it’s about 19.
Came back from Corfu a week ago and I bloody wish I’d booked for longer as it was totally lovely.

brokenlore · 30/07/2023 17:01

it's a maritime climate. I remember plenty of wet, cold and dreary summer holidays in the 80s (I also remember two fab long hot summers in the 80s) I remember them clearly because I spent them with my grandmother in the westcountry and her long suffering patience holding an umbrella whilst we swam in a rainy sea, or packing up a wet tent! May and June are often lovely. Sports days were either unbearably hot or rained off.
But it would be great to have some more sunshine for sure!

kitsuneghost · 30/07/2023 17:04

It's been at least 18 degrees for the past 2 months here

Charlotteowensdodgydad · 30/07/2023 17:09

Up until last month local reservoir was very low and it hadn’t rained for weeks. Ironically we were worrying that there might be a hosepipe ban !
This is north west.

RoseMartha · 30/07/2023 17:11

First three weeks of June were nice. However its been crap since. Heavy driving drizzle at least three times this week where I live. It's depressing.

Comedycook · 30/07/2023 17:13

Same. Autumn and winter lasts so long in the UK. I really look forward to summer. A crap summer makes A/W so much harder to bear. I don't need boiling hot...I would just like some sunny bright days and no rain.

Yes my acer is losing its leaves, it was a lovely colour a few weeks ago. Although it did this last year and had a second growth in September so I'm hoping it does the same this year as teh rest of my plants have been rubbish.

This - this is how I remember the summers of my childhood to be honest - I don't have that many memories of long, dry, sunny spells, although I'm sure there must have been some!

ThePatriarchyIsNotAboutHorses · 30/07/2023 17:22

June was beautiful!

Purplepeopleeaterz · 30/07/2023 17:31

I'm another loving the cooler temperatures this year, there haven’t been many days with high winds and heavy rain here though.

The humidity has been horrible at times but much better than the 30c+ temps we have had in previous years for a week or so at a time.

TheThingIsYeah · 30/07/2023 17:37

I've been unemployed for the past 6 months (redundancy before you MNetters start clutching your pearls) and June was nice. But save for the odd nice day in February the weather has been dogshit nearly every day.

I live in Essex and apart from it being dull it's been unusually wet as well. The Met Office do monthly / seasonal reviews on their website and you can see maps of the UK to show relative hours of sun, mm of rain, temps etc and it's proved that the weather has been crap, rather than it all being in my mind!

ThreeRingCircus · 30/07/2023 17:37

We still have the whole of August to go and September is often beautiful weather. Keep the faith! 🤞

Qilin · 30/07/2023 17:44

It's been the same for years. I teach so have summer school holidays off. We don't often get the best weather in those weeks ime.

Our summery weather seems to be May and September ime.
