Thread 9 - TalkLair: “Russell's teapot goes on being round”

Kucinghitam · 29/07/2023 22:48

Continuation of previous threads (thread 8).

The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with summer flowers - should bloody well be, what with all that rain. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

I made dal and nans today, and although the ingredients only cost about ninepence, it reminded me what a faff it is, and how many pans it dirties.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 14/08/2023 22:00

MrBint is not a fan of small foods, whereas I'd often quite happily have a plate of mezedes or pile of spring rolls. So cooking happens considerably more than it would if I were left to my own devices. He does take his turn though and has a reasonable repertoire these days.

You know who does like small food? The bat that's currently flitting about over our mini meadow. (Not sure of species - it's dark and fast; bigger than a pipistrelle.)

CyanCrystalViolet · 14/08/2023 22:02

I used to like cooking but I’ve been so tired the last few months that it all just feels like Faff. I haven’t had much of an appetite either recently, so a lot of unhealthy grazing has been taking place as proper food hasn’t seemed very appealing. Can you hire a grandmother to come and look after you for a week? Asking for a friend..

CyanCrystalViolet · 14/08/2023 22:05

Oh I love spring rolls @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn. They would possibly feature in my Last Supper.

Britinme · 14/08/2023 22:17

I have leftover roast veggies in the fridge. I have leftover baked salmon in the fridge. Yes, it's going to be pasta. I have some pesto in the fridge too. I've even done dessert - I scored some cheap nectarines the other day so I've quartered them and am baking them with the cheap blueberries I scored at the same time. That'll do us for dessert for about three days. I am the queen of leftovers.

This afternoon I have been working my way through the Belfast dad with daughters in the changing room with a naked man thread. Goodness me, Callmekate has got some stamina to keep coming back and getting still more well-placed stick.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 14/08/2023 22:23

That's my gym.

Britinme · 14/08/2023 22:58

@BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn - I think Belfastdad could probably rely on you to complain about a person getting his cock out in the women's changing rooms!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 14/08/2023 23:46

I've seen nothing so far, but haven't been much recently and do tend to go when it's quiet. But am now braced for a towel-clad march to the reception desk.

That TRSOHer is doing such a sterling job for our side that I hope they keep coming back Grin

I not convinced that calmekate is human. I agree they are doing a very good job.

I have surprised myself by finding that I almost always get a 'real dinner' on the table now that I'm fending for myself. Though sometimes that means omelets or even scrambled eggs. The wheat allergy actually helps in that it limits my bread choices.

I also try not to do pasta too often - I've found that the microwave is very handy for cooking potatoes to mash. I tend to cook batches of eg bolognese sauce or stews and freeze them - currently trying to empty out the freezer while also frustrating that ambition by freezing bags of low carb soups for 5:2 lunches. Cauliflower and mushroom and courgette now both on standby.

Tricyrtis2022 · 15/08/2023 09:20

We get around 'what shall we have for dinner' woes by cooking a large amount of something and then eating that until it's gone. The re-heat nights are called Ready Meals. Currently we're on beef rendang, cauliflower with tahini sauce and this delicious salad, which we do actually make fresh every other day. Served with steamed rice, it does a good few days. A lot of people don't care for eating the same dinner three or four nights in a row, but we don't mind at all.

Those air fryer things look good, but in the colder months the oven becomes part of the heating and spreads a good deal of warmth through the house.

There's always a subset of posters ready to make excuses for bad male behaviour. OTOH a lot of posters willing to stand up against it, so that's good.

Meanwhile, I offer this lovely house (and it is lovely, in that Instagrammable picture-perfect way) because I think the thread will appreciate the estate agent's purple prose.

That's hilarious!

CyanCrystalViolet · 15/08/2023 12:00

I’ve seen estate agent descriptions like that for pokey and depressing one bed rental flats in Brighton. I wonder if they hire copywriters.

MavisMcMinty · 15/08/2023 12:36

Ha ha! I don’t normally read the descriptions, and this one’s hilarious! It is a lovely house though - I’ve known and lived in so many houses looking like that from the outside, two rooms downstairs often knocked through, plus kitchen at the back (and often down a level). Garden looks grimly maintenance-free.

CyanCrystalViolet · 15/08/2023 12:43

It is lovely. I’d have to change the garden into an actual garden though, and do something about those incongruous fitted wardrobes as well as the 70s golden velvet sofa shade of ceiling.

Britinme · 15/08/2023 13:09

I used to live a short walk from there when I was at university. It isn't the best part of that area but it's a handy location.

duc748 · 15/08/2023 13:14

It's lovely apart from that awful bathroom: looks like something out of a prison!

duc748 · 15/08/2023 13:17

My grandmother lived in South Wigston; I can remember getting the L8 bus there from the city centre (the railway station, presumably).

MavisMcMinty · 15/08/2023 13:40

Keep seeing an ad at the top of every MN page for a calendar featuring pooing cats. Who the blithering flip would want that on their wall? Even as a joke present it’s awful.
