Thread 9 - TalkLair: “Russell's teapot goes on being round”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 8).

The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with summer flowers - should bloody well be, what with all that rain. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

On a very light note, thanks to Eric Morcambe, I've just learned how to do the paper bag trick.

Eric's paper bag trick

Eric Morecambe demonstrates his much loved paper bag trick and explains to David Frost how it's done.

So simple and so effective! I don't think I'd be able to pull it off properly.

Looking at the ancient languages I was reading a book about early civilizations and it struck me that an issue with translating in the past might well have been expecting something more literary when written language seems to have initially evolved for very basic accounting type stuff as the quico (can't see the previous page and am probably spelling it wrong) seems to have been. These things are so mundane but so central to a civilization it makes sense that's what the earliest written languages would be.

I'm probably wrong and earlier translators knew that's what they were looking for but us western types can be quite "this is how it is now" about all manner of historical investigation. Linguistics fascinates me but I'm far from knowledgeable on the subject.

I've been practising, MouseMinge, and find it's easier with my right hand, though I'm left-handed.

Isn't the biggest challenge finding a nice crisp paper bag?

I've been taking cuttings of various plants, and it's very difficult finding clear plastic bags - why are plastic bags mostly blue, these days, and why do they have those tie handles, so you have to break into them rather than undoing the little tie thing?

Yes, it helps a lot but we bought some fruit from a greengrocer at the weekend and that's where the bags came from.

After a lame attempt to cancel Richard Ayoado on the Twitters this weekend led to sane people instead talking about the best episode of The IT Crowd I'm now cheering myself up by watching it, The Office Outing.

I've just watched the first episode of Laura Kuenssberg's State of Chaos which covers the May/early Johnson period, including all sorts of fun and games. Highly enjoyable to shout at the screen, even though it all seems very long ago.

Laura Kuenssberg: State of Chaos - Series 1: 1. May/Johnson

Laura Kuenssberg asks if our politics have been stretched to breaking point.

Anyone still out there? We are top of the league, I am delighted to say! 😁Which means we are just 80 minutes way from a Grand Final at Old Trafford, and, best of all, the semi-final we face will be live on Channel 4.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 22/09/2023 23:25

We're on thread 10.

Congratulations on the sportsing. I understood quite a few of those words.
