rootle is like pootle.

like when you have no kids with and can browse everything in TK Maxx with no rush to leave

Gherkingreen · 29/07/2023 07:59

@Freshair1 rootle is, in my head, like @Bodybop says, a chance to properly check something out in detail, with no one rushing you or interfering.

Rootling is best done at places like TKMaxx or the middle aisle at Aldi where you don't really need anything but a good rootle usually uncovers some hidden gem😁

Pootle is more of a slow , happy, ambley-walk, no real rush, just pootling along...🚶

Oh my happy days. My people. Pootle and rootle. Sighs with a lovely cup of coffee

Thanks for starting this thread. My partner tends to break our mugs. I have transferred Tesco vouchers to use at denby so will be ordering some soon.

I’m currently coveting this new cocoa mug from Emma Bridgewater to add to my collection, only without the personalisation.

I got an Emma Bridgewater cocoa mug from the factory, thinking it would be one of my favourites. But it just isn't. I can't explain why, but it just doesn't hit the spot for me. It languishes at the back of the cupboard!

Looks like the handle is too big for the mug, to me...?

OliveHenry · 29/07/2023 09:37

Could be the handle size ...... I'm also weirdly put off by the fact that there are dimples on the inside of the mug where the handle joins!

All EB mugs have those. They’re very, very annoying.

For me the challenge is finding something big enough- tea mugs need to be at least 500 ideally 600ml! Queens pottery used to do a good range as did Whittards as pp mentioned - both really hard to get now.

@CharlotteStreetW1 we have the pretty much the full service of PiP Studio in a mix & match of various colours & patterns. Collected over many years. I adore it & it really does bring pleasure to use it daily!

I'm not a fan of Denby at all.

I also love some of Anthropology's stuff

A beautiful mug is an affordable every day luxury which you should absolutely treat yourself to and enjoy! I like the penguin book ones and have a nice Orla Kiely one. Honestly I'd have many more but my husband draws the line at my 5 mugs, he makes do with one!

I like these for rustic stoneware:

Villeroy and Boch are worth a look through, this one is cute:

I like Cath Kidston stanley mugs. Affordable, wash well, hold a good size tea or coffee, nice to hold - not too thick or heavy. They have some lovely designs too, guests always comment on them.

i have two of these, but they are crazy expensive and she only releases stock once in a while and they sell out in seconds. Oh and often the release is at silly o’clock because she’s based in the US.

But other than that, there are no real downsides!

we’re a mug-loving household, but I have specific preferences when it comes to mugs. They have to be porcelain, go out (not in) going up the mug to the rim, be bright colours, and stack one on top of the other to a height of two mugs.

i only buy one shape, and that is the Lomond shape from Dunoon (bought from Temptation Gifts or garden centres). https://www.dunoonmugs.co.uk/Lomond-0-32L/catalogue/584/ I buy from the ‘modern and bright’ range but there’s something for everyone

many people confuse me for a person who simply likes mugs. I really don’t. I am very specific! We do have other mugs eg for massive hot chocolates, espresso cups, picnic mugs etc but we have a shocking amount of the Lomonds.

I'd go to TKMaxx/Homesense for a rootle, they have beautiful random cups/mugs and you can test the weight/feel of the handle/width of the rim (all important factors for that perfect cup of tea, right?!)
I have a preferred cup for Yorkshire tea, one for mint tea, another for tea when I'm gardening, tea in the morning vs the evening...it's a science.

couldn’t agree with you more!!
