For me, it’s the unpredictability. You look at the weather, rain forecast, although it doesn’t always rain. Or it’s 20 and you never know whether it’s a warm 20 or cold 20. We don’t seem to have much 23-27 degree days this year. I feel like I’m still waiting for summer to properly start.

Thriwit · 22/07/2023 09:35

I’m in the NW, and agree - it just won’t stop fucking raining. I think there’s been one day in the last three weeks where it hasn’t rained. And not just a bit of drizzle, it’s been either steady rain or absolutely torrential. Can’t hang washing out, can’t do work in the garden. DC’s outdoor sports either cancelled or just miserable.

It’s making everything so dark all the time too. I’m not even bothered about the temperature, I just want the rain to fuck off for a few weeks.

I am heartily glad we’re not experiencing the heatwave that Europe is. Would not wish that on us. They’re struggling and they’re generally better set up for hot weather. Think back to last year where you could barely sleep because it was so hot.

🤣 too much media for you love. Switch it off

liveforsummer · 22/07/2023 09:36

The jet stream. It's in the wrong place for sunny weather which means we get unsettled windy wet weather instead. We need it to piss off north and let the high pressure in.

omgsally · 22/07/2023 09:36

slavetothekittens · 22/07/2023 09:22

North West here and rain has been relentless. Had a dry day on Thursday then back to rain, rain and more rain. Too wet to sort the garden out, too wet to go anywhere. Just hoping summer decided to come back soon.

I'm in the NW too. Washing dried on the line in about 2 hours yesterday. The sun shined all day with a nice brisk breeze. I then did a hours worth of gardening. Took the dog out for a walk. It was lovely. Peeing it down now tho.

Sandsnake · 22/07/2023 09:37

It’s utter rubbish, despite the fact that I live in the south east where we’ve had the best of it. As pps say, it’s not just the weather itself it’s the outdoor events it ruins. If this stupid weather means the Aussies keep the Ashes (as is distinctly possible) then I will be raging!

DuesToTheDirt · 22/07/2023 09:37

It's the UK, it's always been rubbish. I live in Scotland, and if we get 3 days of nice weather in a row people think it's been a great summer Confused.

liveforsummer · 22/07/2023 09:39

LittleBearPad · 22/07/2023 09:16

It is lovely. I think you’re exaggerating about the rain. It’s hardly never ending.

It's not never ending with me (although may be in other parts of the country as this unsettled weather means or changes a lot locally) but it's at some point nearly every bloody day. You have to dress for it, wear appropriate shoes for it being wet, lug about a coat that is sweaty to wear when it does rain as it's still very mild. The wind is annoying too!

pictoosh · 22/07/2023 09:22

It's nothing to do with the jet stream...we just happen to be on the wrong side of it. There's an area of low pressure circulating above us. It's been there for three weeks and by all accounts is fixing to stay for another three weeks.

I'm in Scotland so we broke up at the end of June. It has been a showery shit show this year. I've been very disappointed by the weather.

It's everything to do with it because if we were on the other side of it we'd have dry sunny weather 😆

YouDontBringMeFlowers · 22/07/2023 09:41

Everything is still very dry here, we had no rain in June, it was hot throughout and not much rain since. I planted some new garden borders earlier in in year and have been out most days watering them as plants wilting. Light rain at the moment, the rain is most welcome.

TheFairyCaravan · 22/07/2023 09:41

We’re in South Yorkshire and it’s rained almost everyday for weeks. It might not have rained all day, but it’s still bloody rained. I’m so fed up of it. There’s a happy medium between it being scorching hot and pissing down with rain.

The sunshine cheers everyone up, even on a cold Winter day. When it’s grey and rainy you just feel miserable. I feel so sorry for people who have got their children home for 6 weeks watching the rain pouring from the sky this morning. I hope it dries up soon.

midgetastic · 22/07/2023 09:41

And it's flow is being changed by climate change

I also live in Scotland- we've had 3 absolutely glorious summers. All my facebook memories for the last few years show us out enjoying the sun. 2020 we got our dog in April and I think it was August before she experienced rain. This year is to remind us not to become complacent 😅

AnnaNims · 22/07/2023 09:44

It’s rubbish!

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 22/07/2023 09:44

As a gardener i love the rain.

Think of it as life-giving. We'd all be dead with no rain.

Eh? You think the horrendous heat waves in Europe, USA and China plus the marine heat waves are made up by the media? Jeez 🙄

Tiredjoanna · 22/07/2023 09:45

Pissing down in west midlands. Don't want the heat in the 30s like last year, was 9mo pregnant and it nearly killed me (figuratively not literally). But the mid 20s couple of weeks ago was perfect, though my 10mo has been diagnosed with severe hayfever so that put dampener on going out too much

Not sure where you live but since coming back from holiday two weeks ago, from the time we landed at the airport jt has rained every single day

It is depressing.

Nevergetuy · 22/07/2023 09:46

SpeckledlyHen · 22/07/2023 09:12

I have to say I’m really enjoying this summer so far. Much nicer temperatures at low 20’s than the mid 30’s we had last year. I found that unbearable.

Low 20's!!! We're lucky to get about 17 degrees ATM it's just awful and I know we're lucky to have rain but honestly, enough!

LegendsBeyond · 22/07/2023 09:48

I’m enjoying it. It hasn’t been relentless rain here though. Just pleasantly warm, not too hot.

OngoingConfidence · 22/07/2023 09:48

I'm fed up of it now. Always grey and miserable and can't really make plans with friends. We've had very heavy rain and thunder. I can cope with cooler weather as long as it's sunny at least

Ofcourseit · 22/07/2023 09:49

Well I'm having a bbq today at my normal sized house! It's absolutely pissing it down and soon I will be having 30 people to fit somewhere 🤣🤣
I thought having it at the end of July (date decided months ago) it would at least be mild if not sunny.

CrunchyCarrot · 22/07/2023 09:49

Summers in the UK are so often like this. I've lived in England now for 40 yrs and most summers have some decent days and often a month or more is wiped out with cold, rainy weather. It's just the way it is here, a consequence of us being an island at the mercy of the Atlantic and jet stream.

NancyJoan · 22/07/2023 09:50

It’s pouring here today. I think we’ve had rain at some point in every day the last two weeks. The laundry situation is driving me up the wall.

Vickythevan63 · 22/07/2023 09:51

It's nothing to do with the jet stream...we just happen to be on the wrong side of it

The crap that some people post is amazing! It’s everything to do with location of the jetstream!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/features/66234637

We said goodbye to high pressure which brings generally settled weather and a feed of warmer air from the south and replaced it with low pressure bringing rain and cooler weather.

This change was due to movement of the jet stream - a fast wind high in the atmosphere.

To the north of the jet stream you have the cooler Arctic air with rain-bearing weather systems being formed. To the south is where the warmer tropical air sits.

Heatwave: Is it coming to the UK?

With southern Europe baking in extreme heat, will any of that come to the UK?
