Just wondering, whether it’s possible to still be close with a large age gap

I have a brother who’s 6 years older and he’s a nob-end

user3199 · 21/07/2023 22:56

My dad (youngest of 6) was very close to his oldest siblings (sisters who were 10-13 years older than him).

A good friend is is also youngest of 6 - the older 5 are close in age and then she is 12 years younger than the youngest of them. She is very close to one of her sisters, possibly the closest siblings I know of, and she gets on well with all of them.

Six years between me and DB2, he's one of my best friends.

Friends: DB1-DB2 (3 years); DB2-Me (6 years), DB1-DSis (12 years).

Not really such good mates; Me-DSis (3years); DB2-DSis (9 years); me-DB1 (9 years).

Mumto32022 · 21/07/2023 23:07

My partner has a 1 year age gap between one sibling and 9 year age gap with another. He’s closer with his youngest sibling as the have grown up as they have more in common!
I have one year between my eldest two children and 7 years between number 2 and 3. However I feel like the dynamic maybe different as older 2 spend a lot of time at their dads. They are close with their youngest sibling for now but it’s different, not much in common at that age.

CountingMareep · 21/07/2023 23:09

7 years and 5 and a half between me and older DB1/DB2. We don’t speak that often (one of them is now across the pond) but for DB1 it’s like we were never away. DB2 is a bit more complicated as he used to ‘tease’ me growing up and he married a woman with some issues who I’m very wary around. I was pretty much like an only child in adolescence. Trivially, I think we never got into board games because they’re a non-starter with that age gap and the wrong number of participants.

sandgrown · 21/07/2023 23:11

23 years between my oldest and youngest child but they are all very close .

Nagado · 22/07/2023 00:30

Six years between me and my sister. I can’t remember the last time I spoke to her. We live in the same town but I’ve never been to her house and I don’t know her address. We’ve never had a falling out, we’re just very different people and, to be fair, neither of us really has the patience or inclination to deal with the other.

Seven years between me and my brother. If I phoned him at 2am and told him I’d murdered someone, he’d help me hide the body and give me an alibi. Our two families spend a lot of time together. We couldn’t be much closer.

Enko · 22/07/2023 00:37

7 years between sister and I. We are not close. However nor am I close to brother with 3 years between.

I have a 9 year gap (I’m the eldest).

We get on really well when we see each other, but aren’t really part of each others day to day lives at all.

So we get on but we aren’t ‘close’.

Are you my older sister? 😄

😂 mine is currently living in Australia!

PenisFlyTrap · 22/07/2023 08:13

I'm close to my sister now I'm 29 and she's 17. Definitely wasn't the case when I was 17 and she was 5

CustardCreamm · 22/07/2023 08:17

Eldest sibling is 9 years older, we are not close.

Augend23 · 22/07/2023 08:20

Depends what close means to you I think.

8 years between me and my brother. I used to play with him when he was little, up to maybe the age of 4-5 but it was more in the way adults play with children than siblings playing together.

Then not really close once I had started secondary school. I used to go back for school fêtes, help at cubs etc and we never didn't get on, but it still wasn't really a sibling relationship. Once I had gone to uni I didn't really hear from him or anything during term time, but we'd see eachother in the holidays - and again got on fine.

Now he's older, the age gap is in essence getting smaller. We get on well, have good chats etc, and we both help eachother out when we need it. But we're not on the phone every week or anything. He's moving nearer me soon and I hope we'll see more of eachother then.

AuntieMarys · 22/07/2023 08:24

14 years between sister and I. Never close. Saw her about twice in 25 years. We had nothing in common...didn't even feel sad when she died as I didn't know her.

IWFH · 22/07/2023 08:25

I get on very well with my sisters, speak on the phone regularly etc. They are 16 and 11 years older than me. Talk to my brothers (twins) less frequently, but get in ok. They are 5 years older than me. All of us live in different parts of the country.

TheFormidableMrsC · 22/07/2023 08:27

There is 13 years between my two, now 12 and 25 and they are very close. Elder DD is like a second mum to DS as I have been a lone parent for a decade now. I hope it continues this way!

TheFormidableMrsC · 22/07/2023 08:28

Thinking about it, there was a 10 year gap between my Mum and her sister and they were extremely close.

Gilead · 22/07/2023 08:58

There is 12 years between ds and his twin sisters, 10 between him and his brother. They’ve gone on one of their frequent family days out today. They’re really close.

booksandbrooks · 22/07/2023 09:25

My friend has a 10 year gap with her sister and they're best friends.

I am child number 5. I am very close to child number 2 who is almost ten years older than me. She is my sister and one of my best friends. We are both over 45 now.

I'm 12 years older than my brother, and we're very close.

I have an older brother, who's only 18 months older than me, and I'm close to him, too, but in a different way.

But, I'm very lucky that I adore them both.

elp30 · 23/07/2023 06:25

My sister is eight years older than me and we are very close.

We haven't lived in the same city in 33 years but we talk on the phone regularly. Since texting and social media became available, we communicate at least once a day but usually more.

inappropriateraspberry · 23/07/2023 06:35

There is 16 years between me and my eldest sister, 8 years between me and the middle sis.
When I was little, the 8 year gap was big. No teenager wants a little girl hanging around! Now we are older, the gap is negligible, we are all mothers and as adults have the same/similar life experiences. My oldest sister was great when I was little! She would take me on day trips on the bus before she moved out. Again, the gap has closed now we are adults.
