Is anyone with a large sibling age gap close to their siblings?

Just wondering, whether it’s possible to still be close with a large age gap

No. There are 13 and 11 years between me and my older siblings. It was like growing up in a different family and we don't have much time for each other. I'm very close to my younger sibling who is 22m younger than me.
I think it's because we have many shared mentors and experiences.

Mushroo · 21/07/2023 17:08

I have a 9 year gap (I’m the eldest).

We get on really well when we see each other, but aren’t really part of each others day to day lives at all.

So we get on but we aren’t ‘close’.

Beamur · 21/07/2023 17:08

It's 12 years between DD and her siblings and they are quite close and get on well.
I have a sibling 20+ years younger and whilst there's no falling out we just don't really know each other.

I’ve several siblings, some close in age. One much younger (17 years). Im closer the youngest one than I am some of the others. Id say we are close 😊

UnsungShero · 21/07/2023 17:11

My eldest sibling was 20 when I arrived, and the youngest at the time was 10.

We’re close.

How was it like when they were born? Did you get on with them as a child/ or was it difficult adjusting to another

I'm 8 years older than my sister, we are very close X

Mixtapes · 21/07/2023 17:14

Mine are up to 20 years older. I’m close to the one who is only 7 years older and I do remember the one who was 13 years older. I dint remember my other siblings at all.

Crunched · 21/07/2023 17:15

10 years between me and my next sibling, and another one two years older. We are hugely close. When I was 10ish, I loved going to stay the night in their various houseshares/bedsits.
Once my nieces arrived, they loved coming to stay with me in the same way (and were my bridesmaids of course!), no nephews sadly.
One sibling has a big birthday in August, and there will be 23 of us renting a house together to celebrate despite being spread over Europe and 3 from Australia.
I would have wanted a similar age gap ideally but I left it to late starting.

15 years between me and my youngest siblings and he's my best friend and we all get on great

muddlingthrou · 21/07/2023 17:17

How large a gap are you curious about? My sister is 6 years older than me, and we are very close. She's also relatively close to our younger brother - they have an age gap of 9 years.

Marblessolveeverything · 21/07/2023 17:22

13 year gap not close, different life stages and different childhood experiences.

When they arrived I really really was not happy. I was a young teen and had people ask was the baby mine.

It changed the dynamic of my relationship with my mother as really I was a teen while she was neck deep with a baby.

@dodeca it was broadly ok but I found it very frustrating wanting to do things like go to the cinema with my parents and we couldn’t because of the baby.

I do remember feeling put out at the resource sharing (and we shared a room which I would NOT recommend). There was a lot of ‘we can’t afford to that’ which previously wasn’t the case. E.g. we went from annual holidays abroad to occasional wales caravans.

All my anger / frustration was directed at my
parents rather than my sibling though - she’s fun! It meant I was a nightmare teenager though.

TheLongpigs · 21/07/2023 17:25

12 year gap, opposite sexes and live in different countries. We're very close.

MintJulia · 21/07/2023 17:27

Yes, me and sis are the closest of friends - age gap of 13 years. I'm not close to my other siblings who are nearer in age.

Nannyfannybanny · 21/07/2023 17:28

21 years between my oldest and youngest DD, yes they are very close

RitzyMcFitzy · 21/07/2023 17:28

My ex is 20 years younger than his brother (they're half brothers but don't refer to each other as such). Always close although When he was younger his brother had more of a fatherly role whereas now that they're approx 35 and 55 they're just brothers. Close ones.

HamBone · 21/07/2023 17:29

SIL1 is nine years older than SIL2 and they’re close. Apparently, she was very proud of her baby sister when she was born and interested in her as she was growing up.

My cousins have interesting relationships. Two brothers close in age and then their sister was born when they were 13 and 11. The older brother was besotted with her, the other one was indifferent.

They all get on fine now, but there was a huge contrast in their closeness growing up. Perhaps it’s partly down to personality.

BovrilMartini · 21/07/2023 17:29

14 years in between me and my sister. We are really close. Speak every day

collywobble · 21/07/2023 17:30

12 years age gap with my sister, really close , 12 months with my brother and not close.

riotlady · 21/07/2023 17:30

8 years between my sister and me, we get on really well!

MissDollyMix · 21/07/2023 17:31

My DM has 2 sisters- one who is 2 years younger who she really doesn’t see eye to eye with and isn’t close to at all and one who is 13 years younger with whom she is and always was extremely close to so yes it is possible. My DM would say it’s more about personalities than age.

Howtohideasausage · 21/07/2023 17:31

I’m 7 years older than my brother and I get on well with him. I’m 10 years older than my sister and we’re very close. Speak everyday.
I think it was fine when they were born, I guess I had to get in line with it, I don’t remember! It probably kept me naive I think

Growlybear83 · 21/07/2023 17:33

I had a ten year age gap between me and my brother and we were very close.

RuperttheBearHug · 21/07/2023 17:35

13 year gap between me and my Dsis. We didn’t have much to say to each other really until she was around 16. I was in a career by then where I could afford to take her shopping etc so it started slowly but these days, while we’re not part of each other’s day to day (we live on opposite sides of the world) we’re very bonded.

When I was in hospital for a week, her dedication to messaging during the nights thanks to the time zones saved me losing my mind a bit.
