Just wondering, whether it’s possible to still be close with a large age gap

You already have lots of replies and I'm sure many say the same thing as me but just want to put my experience in too. There's a 10 year age gap between me and my sister, I am the eldest. Growing up was tough and we did nothing but argue and she got on my nerves a lot. However we had to share a room so sharing a room with an 8 year old when I was 18 really got to me.

Now that we are older (29 and 19) we get on very well! Text on a regular basis and I go round to visit her at my mum's etc and we have a good relationship

@Natnic9 Cripes, that would drive any teenager mad!

DH and his brother had to share a room (brother’s five years older). He put a strip of duct tape down the middle of the room at one point, to make DH keep his toys, etc. over on his side. 🤣

I'm 9 years older than my youngest brother. We're really close and see each other a lot. My brother who is the middle child and is 2 years younger than me, I hardly ever see or have contact with. But that's more to do with his personality than his age.

Six years between my younger sister and I. We are close. I adored her since the day she was born. There is over a decade between her and my older brother. We all get on well and are involved in each others' lives. DSis lives overseas but is back in the UK regularly for work. I literally count down the days to her next visit as she is very much the "Cool Aunty" to my son

halle1997 · 21/07/2023 20:21

Im 25 and my yougest sibling is 6 and we are so close! She is close in age to my kids i have her over for sleep overs and take her out with us all the time!

fratellia · 21/07/2023 20:21

8 years between us and we are close now (not so much growing up) I think the fact we’ve had our kids at approximately the same time and are geographically near each-other are huge factors.

My DH has two half-siblings who are 20+ years younger than him. They aren’t close at all and it feels very much like they were brought up in separate families, the dynamic is more like an uncle and nephews/nieces than siblings, but I think that’s completely expected with such a huge gap.

15 yrs tween my sons. ds1 moved out\uni\then work when wee one was 3.they have an amazing bond.speak daily on phone.Have overnights together and are very much brothers.

BorderlineCool · 21/07/2023 20:34

There are 14 years between my two girls. They are very close.

However, there is 1.5 years between me and my sister, and we are not close. It must be about 4 years since I last saw her.

problembottom · 21/07/2023 20:38

I’m 40 and my sisters are 53 and 54. We are all best mates, hang out together, holiday together, my kids are younger and their older cousins adore them. I’m “the baby” of the family, a surprise when my mum was in her 40s and I love it.

Dm is #2 out of 4, with an age gap of nearly 20 years between #1 and #4. She was very close to #4, and got on least well with #1-who was only 2 years older than her.
It can work.

whatsinanameeh · 21/07/2023 20:54

I have a sibling one year younger, two years younger and 9 years younger. I treated them all with the same amount of disdain growing up and although we get on with I'm with them, we aren't part of each others lives day to day.

My DH has 3 years between him and brother and it's the same situation.

It must be more to do with personalities meshing than just age gap.

Whatames · 21/07/2023 20:57

Closest to sibling with 11 year age gap. Just similar personalities.

Whatames · 21/07/2023 20:57

Nice relationship when you get as she would take me places…but now as adults we are equals

loverofpants · 21/07/2023 20:57

There's 18 years between my sister and I and we're very close. My brother is only 3 years younger than me and we don't know each other.

Groovee · 21/07/2023 21:00

I have 15,14 and 12 years between us and I'm no contact with them. It was like being an only child growing up as from a young age I was the only one at home. I always said I never wanted big gaps between my own children. The 3 of them are welcome to each other. Their bitterness at anything I do in life got too much.

Serenity45 · 21/07/2023 21:09

I'm the oldest of 6 with age gaps between 4 and 22 years (!). While I wasn't at home when the youngest 2 were born, we are all genuinely close. I have fantastic relationships with them individually (3 sisters 2 brothers) and when we all get together it's brilliant - we have such a laugh. I appreciate that we're v lucky!

hartof · 21/07/2023 21:22

I'm the eldest of 5, there's 10 years between me and sibling 4 and we're close. I'm close to number 3 we have a 5 year age gap, but she has always wound me up and when young we didn't get on. The siblings with the bigger gap I get on best with.

caringcarer · 21/07/2023 21:29

My son's have 8 years between them but now they are both adults they are very close.

msmatcha · 21/07/2023 21:31

10 year age gap. Very close.

doingitalllagain · 21/07/2023 22:28

I have lots of siblings, I'm the youngest (27) and their ages are 30, 33, 37 and 39.

Growing up me and my sibling 3 years older were basically sworn enemies. We argued about everything constantly and didn't play together, we just did not get on at all. My sibling 6 years older and me were really close as teens/young adults. I don't have many childhood memories with the eldest two but now I'd say my eldest sibling (39yo) is who I'm closest too Smile we all get on well though.

MamaNewtNewt · 21/07/2023 22:39

Yes it is. I'm 18 years old than my sister and she's the sibling I'm closest to.

absol · 21/07/2023 22:44

My oldest and youngest SILs are 13 years apart and are the closest sisters I know. I have a DB four years apart from me and we get on well but aren't close at all

Bells3032 · 21/07/2023 22:45

My dad is 13 and 11 years younger than his siblings and very close to both of them

SallyWD · 21/07/2023 22:47

I've always been really close to my brother who's 15 years younger.

JudgeAnderson · 21/07/2023 22:49

Me. They were 14 and 16 when I was born and both are much closer to me than each other.

I have friends with similar gaps (both older and younger) and all are close.

I think that much of a gap removed the sibling rivalry factor and you dote on/get doted on instead if all goes well.
