"We just want humane ways of doing it and don't think putting 500 people on a fire trap or swapping 200 for Rwandans in the answer. "

Yes I agree.
Although I also object to the cost.
The Bibby Stockholm & Rwanda plans are largely performative exercises. They won't solve the issues, neither policy can make a dramatic difference to the numbers applying & there is no evidence that for example Rwanda will work as a deterrent - if there was the Home office would have published it.

And we will still have a 70,000 backlog and massive bills.

I don't suppose there is any hope of the Government addressing the backlog now, they'll leave it to Labour.

RafaistheKingofClay · 10/08/2023 08:09

I don’t get how people don’t see it is a performative exercise. The numbers just don’t stack up. Even if they stick with the 500 and don’t reduce it to a fire safe number, this must be saving us minimal costs off the hotel bills.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 10/08/2023 08:33

Honest Bob Jenrick admitted that they don't want to get rid of the backlog as not waiting in limbo for years on end would encourage others to come.

Notonthestairs · 10/08/2023 08:40

The backlog is obviously a huge deterrent as numbers have dropped...oh wait...

Ed Vasey said this morning on Good morning Britain it's just performative. Another Tory who can't defend them and even said so!

The same way as a barge that's already been filled by people waiting for 2-3 years for a decision isn't going to be a deterrent.

They know they'll get the hotel rooms that have been vacated by people going to a barge.

A deterrent could possibly be knowing you come here - are processed immediately and sent back if your not genuine.

Or knowing you can make a claim before you go and there's no point if you aren't genuine.

It's all such a shit show and it's costing us more to perform this propaganda stunt than actually coming up with a solution would cost.

Terrible news. We are feeding the people on the barge.

while completely missing the point that the government should be doing something about the children living in poverty and not getting enough to eat rather than making more people go hungry.

This type of argument seems to be coming up a lot. Pretty sure the answer is don’t vote Tory. Ever.

RafaistheKingofClay · 10/08/2023 09:59

Incidentally those pictures do look considerably better than the stuff we are feeding asylum seekers in hotels.

People aren't fooled

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/british-public-migrant-barge-poll-channel-crossings-uk-2023-nd5npvbkw

behind paywall but I could read this

The vast majority of the public do not believe that housing asylum seekers on barges will deter migrants from crossing the Channel in small boats, according to exclusive polling for The Times.
A YouGov survey has found that just 11 per cent of voters believe the use of the barges will stop further crossings, with 78 per cent saying it will not.

More than half — 54 per cent — also do not think the Rwanda policy will act as a deterrent.

The people on the barge thread might have to wait a while for the Tory surge in voting intention polls this policy is going to bring them.

The important thing is though that those 11% are the core vote the Tories are going after.

Sunak's pledge/promise to lower NHS waiting listst isn't going well either

The number of people on the NHS waiting list has soared to 7.6m, the highest-ever number

I’m so tired of all this. Why won’t they just give up and go?

Notonthestairs · 10/08/2023 10:50

My feelings exactly Blossom.

AdamRyan · 10/08/2023 10:51

The barge thread is awful
And I'm so sick of the unprovable "I live in an area with high migrants and its full of crime and sex attacks, middle class people don't understand" blaaaaaah evidenced by a link that doesn't say anything of the sort
Really does feel like a paid campaign on here, then interestingly I run into the same posters making very right wing claims on private school threads, trans threads (Kemi Badenoch being the saviour of society).
It's really putting me off posting. But also seems wrong that as a society we are allowing paid political PR campaigns.
Rory Stewart very interesting about this on the last Rest is Politics pod.

Yes, also on HE threads.

Sadly, not so sure about the paid bit so much as DIY sentinels.

How long do you think it’s going to take them to clock that every time there’s a covid wave we have to start cancelling elective lists and this probably won’t make the waiting lists shorter.

I see today’s plan is going to be giving more money to the private sector rather than letting the nhs have it.

Piggywaspushed · 10/08/2023 11:01

It's really putting me off posting.

I rather think that is the point. Then they can believe everyone agrees with them.

See also Covid deniers and climate deniers. All one big happy Venn diagram of bollocks and bile.

The NHS doesn't donate to them.

Cancelling free Covid and Flu vaccinations for u65's is such a good idea....

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 10/08/2023 11:03

I've read the under 65s can't even buy a covid jab if they want one - which makes no sense. If you can buy a flu jab why not covid?

I have never listened to The Rest is Politics - might have to give it a try.

DuncinToffee · 10/08/2023 11:03

Virtual bed wards are being touted, I assume that also involves the private sector?

I only think they are paid because they have no interest whatsoever in debating issues. So I don't know what the motivation for posting is.

It's brilliant. Well worth listening to, really interesting and also proper debate on things.
