yes. It’s certainly true of Trump. I’m pretty sure the current Tory polling is probably the always always Tory vote. The floating votes and the centre right Tories have gone. And I suspect a lot of the moderate right will have too because this isn’t a Tory party they recognise.

Notonthestairs · 08/08/2023 22:35

That 25% is why the Conservatives flocked to Farage's cause last month. They had to do their best, if not to get ahead of him, at least fall inline with him. Farage leading another political party in the next election would really rattle those cages.

This is not good. Times reporting it’s Russians but behind a paywall.

😬

"The fact the hackers were inside the Electoral Commission systems from August 2021 indicates this was not a criminal hacking operation looking to make a quick buck through extortion.

This was a patient and skilled adversary to have been inside undetected for so long.

This operation looks like a probing one seeking out information about the UK's democratic process to search for weaknesses. "

Prof Adrian Pabst, deputy director for public policy at Niesr, said low-income households would be hit hardest, with real disposable incomes in this group falling by about 17% over the five years to 2024.
"For some of the poorest in society, coping with low or no real wage growth and persistent inflation has involved new debt to pay for permanently higher housing, energy and food costs," Prof Pabst said.

Jenrick’s the one who drew the short straw and got the media round this morning. That’s always fun.

This is what politics looks like between now and the next election. Ministers simulate the business of serious administration but with a singular focus on trapping and unsettling the opposition. The statute book is cluttered with laws drafted for use as campaign slogans, regardless of whether they can be made to work in practice. Here we are all now detained, condemned to the in-between zone where a prime minister has run out of road but not yet arrived at defeat; a country stuck in the purgatory of non-government.

Britain is trapped in political purgatory – waiting for its undead government to fall | Rafael Behr

Policy that can’t work and laws written purely for campaign slogans are clear symptoms of a moribund regime, says Guardian columnist Rafael Behr

Did anyone hear Yvette Cooper on Today this morning? I thought she was excellent.

itsgettingweird · 09/08/2023 17:32

I always think she's excellent.

I think she'd make a really good leader of the Labour Party.

Her or Rachel Reeves.

DuncinToffee · 09/08/2023 17:36

I didn't see her this morning but like itsgettingweird I really like her and think she would be a good Labour leader.

Yes or Thangam Debbonaire. There’s a lot of talent on that front bench. Are you OK @itsgettingweird? You got a lot of stick this afternoon.

DuncinToffee · 09/08/2023 17:40

Thangam Debbonaire should be just for her brilliant name

OP posts:
Blossomtoes · 09/08/2023 17:58

It’s a wonderful name. It suits her.

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/08/2023 18:07

It is the best name. There isn’t a better one.

jgw1 · 09/08/2023 19:49

I'm disappointed the other thread filled up before I was able to establish whether there is a war in HK.

DuncinToffee · 09/08/2023 20:09

I wanted to ask Clav about middle class refugees and asylum seekers but was too late as well.

It was turning into personal attacks towards the end

Those threads always turn into personal attacks. I have a grudging respect for Clav, she never descends to that level and she is provoked at times.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Thanks for asking.

I'm fine

It makes me laugh tbh. It's so obvious when they can't fight with facts because the fight with semantics and twist everything.

Usually you know I ignore a certain person who does that.

I decided today to play the game - I'm in full summer holiday mode and after a few hours canoeing in the sunshine it was a welcome break to sit on my arse and MN!

I've had lots of "spars" with Clav but always say I respect her. At least she managed to back up her points with evidence even if she doesn't embellish them with her opinion Grin

Kiwano · 09/08/2023 21:03

Entirely coincidentally, before I came onto this thread I was thinking about how deeply personally unpleasant some of the right wing proponents round here are now, but that to be fair to Clav she didn't come into that group, no matter how irritating her constant attempts at deflection are.

I'm quite pissed off that one of the group has a username taken from P G Wodehouse's books, I don't think he deserves it.

Anxioys · 09/08/2023 21:12

Clav is okay, but not a fan of some. They are quick to set bait or try and get you riled. I just ignore it.

Blossomtoes · 09/08/2023 21:14

I think the unpleasantness is born of frustration and desperation. It’s going to be a nightmare in the run up to the GE.

Can be found stirring on various boards...

I've missed a lot today.
From the snippets I have read it seems like a testing out of the Braverman's supposed 100 million coming here argument.

Obviously her claim was disproved

fullfact.org/immigration/suella-braverman-100-million-claim/

But I guess they think they might be able to frighten voters - no matter how unworkable (financially or practically) the policies are in reality.
Notably very little engagement in what well run foreign aid & soft power might achieve. Let alone better relationships with the French. I guess that's a bit too Rory Stewart for them.

But you'd think that an argument that hinges largely on climate change would make them eco warriors - but far from it.

What is obviously missing is any reference to the Conservatives actual 13 year record - on immigration or the economy or education or the NHS or transport and infrastructure. No mention of the Brexit sunlit uplands hiding just around the corner.

We are supposed to treat them as if they've been in opposition all this time.

itsgettingweird · 10/08/2023 05:47

Yea definitely felt like a testing of the "climate change will cause more displacement. Do you want millions turning up on our shores - were an island" tagline.

Not sure they were expecting quite so much response of "well sort out climate change and the reason for displacement then".

And my only suspicion for this is the posters who were "attacked" were the ones who mentioned that the policies to slow down climate change and stop the boats are conflicting - which included me!!!

The irony of course being that many - like me - do think we need to stop the boats. Do think we need to crack down on criminal gangs offering death defying trips across the Atlantic. We just want humane ways of doing it and don't think putting 500 people on a fire trap or swapping 200 for Rwandans in the answer. 🤷‍♀️
