Yes I thought I'd read somewhere that forecasters are being woke and hyperbolic by using shades of red to indicate where the hottest temperatures are.

Baroness Owen of Alderley Edge and Lord Houchen of High Levan will be introduced in the House of Lords this afternoon. At 30 years old, Baroness Owen is the youngest life peer in British history.

And for yet more preparatory finger pointing, London Day Travelcards are set to be discontinued, costing day trippers into London more. MoL blaming government; government blaming MoL.

DuncinToffee · 24/07/2023 15:40

Sunak flew to the Midlands by helicopter today

Was that proportionate or pragmatic?

tobee · 24/07/2023 15:57

I did one of my YouGov surveys just now. It was a general one about my views on politics today.

After a few questions it said something like

"Now please tell us what you think of these politicians"

First up :- Jeremy Corbyn

My first thought was: Omg! Seriously?
Then, of course, my second thought was: this thread!!

I think that was Neil Oliver on GB news. Twat.

Truly a depressing story.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/jul/24/suella-braverman-acted-unlawfully-over-asylum-seekers-judge-rules

The home secretary acted unlawfully in failing to provide basic support to asylum seekers, including young children and pregnant women, a judge has ruled.
Suella Braverman must introduce changes that will benefit thousands of asylum seekers after five successfully challenged the home secretary in the high court.

Among the cases in which the asylum seekers struggled to provide basics for their children owing to delays in support payments, the judge said one faced an existence “which was in many ways wretched, particularly for a young child who went without on many occasions” and in another suffered “very saddening circumstances” where the parent was “reduced to asking in shops for leftover food” and the children became “lethargic” and “visibly thinner”.
In a third case involving an 82-year-old disabled woman who was unable to access accommodation and support in a timely way, the home secretary has been ordered to pay her compensation after accepting she had unlawfully failed in her legal duty to provide the woman with accommodation and support.

That’ll be liberal lefty woke lawyers ensuring people get their basic human rights met.

Blossomtoes · 24/07/2023 17:04

It’s hugely depressing. That article is horrifying.

IClaudine · 24/07/2023 18:08

I just read that article and came here to see if you had all seen it. Truly shameful. How can anyone defend such abject cruelty?

Many asylum seekers are entirely dependent on the Home Office for their survival in the form of payments of £45 a week if they are in shared housing or £9.10 a week if they are living in a hotel

But of course they are all coming over here to sponge off our generous benefits system...

DuncinToffee · 24/07/2023 18:11

That is truly horrific, but will be cheered on by those who see nothing wrong with removing Mickey Mouse murals.

She is utterly vile. Happily, she's a Buddhist, so will, at least, be suitably rewarded in her next life for her actions in this one. Appalling woman.

Blossomtoes · 24/07/2023 19:01

She’s a Buddhist?! Seriously? That’s unbelievable.

newnamethanks · 24/07/2023 19:13

Yup. Sadly and mind-wobblingly true.

UK to run up highest debt interest bill in developed world
Treasury on course to spend 10% of government revenue on bond costs this year, according to Fitch

https://www.ft.com/content/b25903fd-2ebe-4f65-aa20-c21d873946f3

The UK is on track to incur the highest debt interest costs in the developed world this year as persistently high inflation and an unusually large proportion of government bonds linked to price rises damage the public finances.

The Treasury will spend £110bn on debt interest in 2023, according to a forecast by Fitch. At 10.4 per cent of total government revenue, that would be the highest level of any high-income country — the first time the UK has topped the data set that goes back to 1995 — after an improvement by the prior leader Iceland.

Haven't watched BBC News in a long time. Stories today about uK modern slavery investigations rise and record number of children homeless in England.

Not to mention radiographers on strike and surge in health to have a major impact on nhs.

There's so much to be done.

*surge in major illnesses

RafaistheKingofClay · 25/07/2023 12:47

Would be good if we could start doing it now. If the Tories can’t be bothered to govern they should just fuck off and let someone else do it. They won’t because they’ve still got money to make.

jgw1 · 25/07/2023 13:15

Apparantly the UK government is urging Israel to respect the independence of the judiciary.

I am confused.

Cornettoninja · 25/07/2023 13:23

£110bn on debt interest Shock

I wonder how much of that is directly related to Truss’s tenure and the MRP.

This sums up Sunak, depressing

Not a parody account apparently. This is the real Prime Minister of the United Kingdom mimicking Donald Trump and Nigel Farage

these laws go further than any government has gone before

There’s a reason for that, Rishi. Although I suspect it might be more accurate to say UK government. Not sure that going further than any government anywhere has ever gone is necessarily a good thing.
