I'd have had a tiny bit of respect for him if he had made the statement himself. But the cowardly dirty old man hides behind his wife. More fool her.

I mean...he's in psychiatric care. Jesus Christ

Man fucks up. Woman picks up the pieces. Man hides behind his “mental elf”.

Right? I can't roll my eyes hard enough. Only a matter of time before the 'be kind' brigade are out in force, waving Caroline Flack around.

PhoenixIsFlying · 12/07/2023 18:29

Nobody knows what has happened so why the hateful posts making assumptions. What is it with people who want to jump on the band wagon of how terrible someone is when they have no idea of the facts.
He would not be admitted into any hospital private or otherwise unless there was real need.

Has anyone else wondered what the statistical chances are of so many high profile male presenters being secretly gay/bi AND attracted to underage minors?!! It's so bizarre...is it just a fluke or does it reveal that there are a significant proportion of men who have those propensities? Only those in powerful positions may end up with the possibility to live out their secret lives. Also makes you wonder how many more men out there could do the same things simply given the money and status.

What are you saying, that gay or bisexual men are more likely to be attracted to minors?

DeeCee77 · 12/07/2023 18:29

Labtastic · 12/07/2023 18:25

The whole thing has been absolutely repulsive. The police have said there has been no crime committed as far as they are concerned. The Sun has successfully buried the far more important stories to do with bloody Boris Johnson and his phone and the Covid inquiry.

There is an "unnamed" sitting MP who has been accused of rape and who is still a sitting MP. There are numerous others who have sexual assault claims against them. Can we get some perspective? This is just a man whose unwise, but not illegal, private life choices have been smeared all over the front of the papers. He's been an idiot but I really feel for him.

100%

The only thing I wouldn't agree with is feeling for him as he did cheat on his wife. But yes, he did nothing illegal. This was a private matter and should never have made the news. That scummy rag will print anything.

MissPop · 12/07/2023 18:30

@Qilin

Amazing the lengths some women will go too to defend this. Can’t say I’m surprised.

He has not been sectioned. He has checked himself into a private inpatient hospital. Very easy to do if finances allow.

How does being depressed make it acceptable to ask teenagers for sex pics when you’re in your 60s? Why is “mental health” now a catch-all excuse for everything?

It doesn't.

However it also doesn't sit right to say that a 'MH card' is being played if that person does indeed have long ongoing MH issues.

It doesn't mean it's an excuse for what has alleged to have happened though.

Notsogoodhousekeeping · 12/07/2023 18:30

Those commenting on the Priory being only for the well-heeled: I would check your facts first. My dad ended up an inpatient at one of their sites following his discharge from a secure unit at an NHS hospital, all under the NHS. Just like some NHS patients will be treated at private hospitals where services are contracted out.

My dad was sectioned twice and both times his behaviour was increasingly bizarre - including an affair. He has suffered from serious clinical depression for most of his life and is medicated these days, but having spent most of my teens and twenties waiting for the call to say he'd been sectioned again or finally succeeded in taking his own life has had a significant impact on my own mental health.

It's all well and good being a keyboard warrior about Huw Edwards' situation, but I would expect he's in a pretty bad place right now and I'm sure as shit not going to judge. None of us have the whole picture.

watermeloncougar · 12/07/2023 18:31

@Labtastic spot on.

The Sun splashes this all over while ignoring really serious issues

@AnorLondo they weren't 'minors'

Never said they were, did you read the post I was responding to?

SomethingNastyInTheGenePool · 12/07/2023 18:31

As a PP noted, he has a history of severe depression. Nothing in his wife’s statement was using this as a justification for his actions. She was saying that the stress of the past week has tipped him into crisis.

Labtastic · 12/07/2023 18:32

The only thing I wouldn't agree with is feeling for him as he did cheat on his wife.

Yes, agreed. I just mean I feel for him in the way it's all been handled. He might as well be in the stocks in the town square. Cheating is awful, horrible and hurts a great deal of people, but this still isn't in any way proportionate.

lieselotte · 12/07/2023 18:32

The Sun has successfully buried the far more important stories to do with bloody Boris Johnson and his phone and the Covid inquiry

Yes this is the more important issue. That said, the rest of the media who aren't all run by Murdoch didn't have to go along with it, they could have got on with actually reporting news. But lets have a go at the BBC instead.

Anyway, regardless of whether he is unwell, he was an idiot. As I've said on other threads, when you are in the public eye people are out to get you and will look for this sort of thing. It was bound to catch up with him eventually.

Flippertyfeckerty · 12/07/2023 18:32

A certain female presenter was actually charged with a crime, she was hounded relentlessly and killed herself. And then everyone extolled #bekind on every platform. Yet no one is in this scenario, where no actual crime has been committed- let’s remember the police have investigated and drawn that conclusion already- is giving an inch and the same old British flogging is taking place. It’s all very very sad.

MissPop · 12/07/2023 18:32

@Notsogoodhousekeeping

Ive had family members sectioned and funnily enough it hasn’t involved seedy behaviour.

Some of you are SO naive thinking he’s been sectioned. Nar, he has the funds. Mental health is BIG business. You can check in for anything you like if the funds allow. Wake up.

Velvian · 12/07/2023 18:32

I hope he can hold himself accountable for his actions. I really hope that the sexual exploitation of those that are vulnerable or powerless is starting to be seen as totally unpalatable.

We have a very long way to go.

NDerbys32 · 12/07/2023 18:32

5 pages, so far, of indignation from folk who have absolutely nothing to do with it.

I wonder how many are throwing bricks round their own particular glass houses?

There's bigger things in the news to be interested in, surely?

PollyThePixie · 12/07/2023 18:33

AlrightJulia · 12/07/2023 18:04

Yes. Clearly something major has happened to him. Awful for his family. I hope he gets the help he needs too.

His wife has said he’s received treatment in recent years for severe depression so it seems as if this awful mess has triggered another episode of it.

The police have said there is no criminal element to what he’s being doing and I hope he’s left in peace now to recover and salvage what he can with his family.

MissPop · 12/07/2023 18:33

@NDerbys32

So why you here then? The photos of him on WhatsApp with his pants round his ankles are mortifying. If that was me I would check myself into the local private inpatient unit too 🤦‍♀️.

ThreeRingCircus · 12/07/2023 18:33

Huw Edwards has had (well documented) mental health issues for years.....so no, I do not think he is "playing the mental health card"...... I imagine he is at rock bottom and his reputation and career has been permanently damaged which must be extremely difficult to cope with. I do wish him well and hope he recovers from this.

However, even if not illegal what he has done needs calling out. It is not OK for married, middle aged men to be having sexual contact with teenagers. This sort of sleaze is wrong and it shouldn't just be swept under the rug. This is the lead news anchor for the publicly funded BBC and presenters such as Huw Edwards need to be held to higher standards than most others. He needs credibility when reporting on other scandals or similar news stories and that has been lost.

The BBC will be able to sack him for misconduct/bringing the organisation into disrepute and I think they absolutely should. It is so disappointing. That doesn't mean that I don't wish him well and a swift recovery.

I've certainly not defended him. I don't defend any sexual predator type behaviour, especially towards young people by older adults.

MH issues are not an excuse for the alleged behaviour.
As yet the claims are still alleged and being investigated further, following the police stating they have no evidence of criminal activity.

However, it also doesn't mean that people should automatically dismiss claims of MH if someone has been admitted to hospital as a result of them.

The two things can be commented on separately.
MH issues can exist long term. They don't excuse bad behaviour however.

I do agree with this. Boris has behaved questionably worse.

GO not much reporting on that.

I never mentioned being sectioned. Please don't put words that I didn't say. You seem to have missed the point I was making regarding aggressive texts.
