typo in my previous comment - “He's had years of documented mental health problems.”

70% of the population have had years of documented health problems! That doesn’t give anyone a free pass to exploit kids.

May I just say, for the sake of enhancing context, that there are two main types of 'Section' under the Mental Health Act. A patient can be either voluntarily or involuntarily sectioned, in either a private hospital / clinic or in a NHS hospital / clinic.

The Priory and a number of other private facilities offer a 'luxury' service in their brochures, and offers a number of therapies. For the voluntary patient, it is a very different experience being there than being an involuntary patient in a NHS facility.

You cannot be voluntarily 'sectioned'
You can be voluntarily admitted to a mental health facility, but that is not a form of sectioning.

Kilofoxtrot99 · 12/07/2023 19:49

Bad behaviour feels bad. Having mental health issues or depression doesn’t excuse awful behaviour if in fact that is what has happened. He has been trialled by media, and the public , and if these allegations are true then the stress of hiding unhealthy habits will no doubt have contributed to his decline in MH. The thought and fear of being found out are huge stressors and if he has screwed over his wife and kids with shady doings then no wonder he feels so terrible to be found out. Feel for his family and they deserve a bit of privacy to adapt to a whole new reality.

Newnamenewname109870 · 12/07/2023 19:49

All really sad tbh. Took me ages to work it out! So many other names seemed to come out from the speculation. I’m glad he’s been named.

FMLWTF · 12/07/2023 19:50

As posters have said, he has had years or documented mental health problems

And? Oh, that means this 60 year old man can ask your teenager for dick pics does it? Because he’s depressed? Poor love.

Oddsockday · 12/07/2023 19:51

If Huw is quoted as "playing the long game"
They are not the words of someone suffering a mental health crisis.

That is a well thought out strategy like a game of chess. Don't fall for it.

Inkanta · 12/07/2023 19:51

I have four teenagers, and the very idea that someone of Huw Edwards' clout (and age) could pay them for sexual images and be forgiven because he's depressed, makes me fucking livid

Yes. Its a top manipulation when the wrongdoer hankers for compassion because they are ill and if you are not compassionate (because they are ill) you are the baddie. The main issue pushed under the carpet - conveniently.

MIBnightmare · 12/07/2023 19:51

Lemmein

There are a shit load of laws that will cover 'exploitation' I know I work in this field.. Modern Slavery Act 2015 .. section 76 of the Serious crimes act .. coercive and controlling behaviour.. and yet they are NOT taking it further .

' Victim does not understand any of this and does not support' from their own lawyer..

My take ? Parents saw a money making op out of a celebrity doing stuff he should have known better about but ultimately behaviour between two consenting ADULTS.

Agree, but I was responding to the possible insinuation his mental health problems are only being shared publicly now for the first time.

Sorry yes you're right. Excuse my clumsy shorthand. I was responding to posters saying he'd been sectioned, when it could be a voluntary, private admission.

I can’t believe people are falling for the mental health excuse. What a load of bull. Of course he’s feeling down in the dumps - wouldn’t you be if this was happening? He’s been caught out in a very public way being throughly seedy. That would dent anyone’s mood. And of course he’s feeling annoyed with himself and upset and probably regretful and definitely embarrassed. But that’s just a normal reaction to having one’s very dirty laundry aired in public. It’s not an excuse but he’s using it as one. And we’re all supposed to pipe down and be awestruck by his stunning and brave admission of depression and possibly homosexuality. He’s directing the narrative - he’s a journalist at heart.

Which would be the case if it were that simple. But the man has been forced to wave his right to anonymity. Has continuously been hounded and had his public life plastered all over the sun! Technically the BBC have no grounds to investigate and this has been said publicly.

Ive had mental health issues and it really drives me crackers when people think that this is an excuse. I genuinely don’t think that it is, he’s had a history of it, and I think given the sheer volume of ‘evidence’ we’ve been led to believe this week, some people forget this man is a human being with mental health needs like the rest of us!

Still just astounded at the number of people throwing around ‘exploitation’ and such. Why are you believing The Sun on ANY of this?! The ‘victim’ himself has said nothing happened and the police have found no evidence of anything criminal! So WHY are you hell bent on believing any of the story?! The only definitive questionable behaviour I can see is from the parents. And let’s be very clear before the ‘they didn’t sell their story’ gets trotted out - The Sun said they didn’t ask for payment. That means precisely nothing, they didn’t specify they hadn’t TAKEN a payment if offered.

Oddsockday · 12/07/2023 19:56

@Supergirl1958 then why has he been quoted earlier as intending to Play the long game?
Does that sound like a mentally unwell person to you?
It reeks of Manipulation.

This was my point! I find it really bizarre that statistically, so many high profile people happen to be closeted and attracted to underage people as well. (I'm absolutely NOT insinuating that being gay increases the chances of being attracted to minors which one crazy PP accused me of). You need to imagine this:

The chances of being a household name, nationwide-famous TV presenter is maybe 1 in 30 million.

The chances of being gay is 10%

The chances of being a hebophile (or whatever the term is for being attracted to teens) is possibly 10% (??)

The chances of being all 3 is so vanishingly tiny that it's absolutely insane how two cases have flown up within the same time period in history, with two people of similar ages.

Which leads to the suspicion that maybe some things are not as rare as people assume? Maybe far more men are closeted or attracted to minors or both, and they only lack the fame and power to act on those impulses?!

We don't know that the teenage is male. And even if they are, two examples is not exactly statistically significant.

And it kind of does sound like your saying gay and bisexual men are more likely to be sexually attracted to teenagers.

Can you read properly? That quote was from Jeremy Vine (who hasn’t spoken to him), not from Huw Edwards.

LonginesPrime · 12/07/2023 20:00

It’s not an excuse but he’s using it as one.

Has he made a statement already?

I only saw the holding statement from his wife and must have missed this.

FFS no one is saying that.

MrsPapadopolis · 12/07/2023 20:01

Has no-one bothered to read this ????

The Metropolitan Police and South Wales Police both said this evening that no criminal offence had been committed by the presenter. The BBC had paused its internal probe into the claims Mr Edwards paid the teenager for explicit pictures - and that investigation will now continue.

I believe the parents 100%. I also trust my own judgement. It’s also compelling that other victims are now coming forward.

Nothing to do with media speculation - I don’t read the papers - the bbc confirmed themselves threatening and abusive messages were sent from Edwards phone. We will find out the rest in the coming days.

ButterCrackers · 12/07/2023 20:04

I feel sorry for his wife. How difficult it must be for her to be dealing with this matter.

Oddsockday · 12/07/2023 20:04

@Southeastdweller yes I can read properly.
He is repeating the words Huw told somebody earlier today.

Jeremy Vine summarised it. Hue is angry and is intending to Play the long game.
